Secretary’s Notes Thus another year comes to an end and new one starts. Our members have had a busy year attending a diverse array of events near and far, organised by others and by ourselves. Well done to all those who played a part. I have already had suggestions for this coming year for local events arranged by our own members so watch out for the calendar and we hope to see you out in your cars.

Editor’s Notes Greetings to all. Thin pickings this month I’m afraid. Not too much to add from the notes above except I have been contacted by a member who is able to take on the newsletter temporarily whilst we encourage a more permanent member to take on the role of Editor. More at the AGM. Thanks to Fiona for a write-up and pictures on the Mottisfont walk.

  • 1009 Christmas Dinner at Bartley Lodge Hotel, Cadnam

I hope the fifty-four members who attended this year’s annual dinner enjoyed their time at the Bartley Lodge Hotel. For the most part I received very positive feedback and will be following up at the AGM if members wish to make a return in 2015. It didn’t take long for photos to make it onto the website and I have chosen one showing our former Area Secretary Roy and wife Kris receiving their gifts from our members in recognition of their work with the club. We hope to see them both out and about in a more relaxed mode in future events.

    Gents relaxing! Ladies dancing!

A Letter from Roy to All Members

I absolutely loved my time as secretary of Southampton and New Forest MGOC having taken over from Tania Horrocks back in April 2007. During that time your support was second to none and I will never forget the camaraderie and fun we had at events both at home and travelling away. Your ongoing support is a major contribution and a vital ingredient in the strength of this club, long may it continue. Being presented with the engraved mantle clock at the Xmas Dinner is another moment I shall cherish. To top that to receive the award for Club Person of the Year 2014 was simply the icing on the cake. May I add Kris was delighted with the beautiful bouquet of flowers and we both appreciate the gift of next year's membership.

Thank you all so much for your generosity.

    Roy

  • Mid-Monthly – 1009 Annual General Meeting

Wednesday 21 January 2015 at the Empress of Blandings at 8pm An agenda is being emailed to all members directly in advance of the AGM but I would ask for any agenda items to be passed to me at soonest opportunity if there are any other items you wish to be included.

Charity Nominations – 2015 New Forest Run Julie has completed the count from member’s selections and the results are as follows:

Simon Says Bereavement Support in Hampshire http://www.simonsays.org.uk/

Aims & Mission At Simon Says, we know that the death of someone important can have a devastating effect on a child or young person. Given appropriate support and information, children and young people can be supported to understand what has happened and move forward to rebuilding their lives. Whether the death was sudden, or expected, we work closely in practical and creative ways with children and young people to create an atmosphere in which grief can be shared and normalised.

    Our Aim

When children lose someone close to them they may feel angry, guilty, frightened and alone. It can be very difficult for a parent, carer, close relative or friend to help a bereaved child when they are grieving too. ‘Simon Says’ aims to:

Support Hampshire children and young people up to the age of 18 years who has a significant person in their life who has died or is dying

Offer information and advice to move forward in their lives, but never to forget their significant person

    Run a telephone support line

Host monthly age appropriate support groups

Offer the opportunity to meet other families who have also been bereaved

Support and give advice and training to teachers, and other professionals working with bereaved children and young people

    Mission Statement

To ensure that the carer of any bereaved child or young person in Hampshire is aware of Simon Says, the services it provides, and how to access support if needed.

    What we do

We have helped and continue to work with thousands of children from across the UK. Most of our

children are young carers who juggle school and growing up whilst performing a surrogate adult role at

home. Many care for a chronically or terminally ill loved one, or have a parent with drug, alcohol or

mental health problems. Some will have been in a caring role from as young as 5 years old, 24 hours a

    day, 365 days a year.

Our children have no time to just be children

When not at school they might be cooking, washing, cleaning, changing dressings, bathing, or offering

emotional support. This leaves little time for their own social and personal development, putting them

at high risk of depression, anxiety, poor mental or physical health, social problems, isolation, bullying

    and absence from school.

We also work with vulnerable children from homes with extreme social, financial or emotional

challenges. They are often victims of abuse or neglect and many will be on the Child Protection

Register. Like young carers, they are often left to fend for themselves with no opportunity to live a

normal childhood. For them, going on a trip to the cinema or to the beach is a rarity. Having a break

away from their stressful home environment is virtually unknown.

This is where Honeypot comes in…

We offer a programme of long term, personalised and consistent support that gives hope and

encouragement to these children. This includes a holiday once a year, birthday cards, photos, Christmas

presents and visits from our Playbus.

We give the gift of time and space in an environment where they can do things like ride a bike, learn to

swim, go to the beach, or just play freely in the fresh air without the need to worry for the first time.

They learn new life skills, build strong friendships and create lasting childhood memories that they can

cherish for many years to come.

MG and the British Touring Car Championship 2015

MG confirmed on 10 December]that it will return to the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship in 2015 with the MG6 GT and continue the successful partnership with Triple Eight Race Engineering that saw MG lift the manufacturers’ championship title this year.

MG Head of Marketing, Matthew Cheyne, said “I am delighted to be able to confirm that MG will return to defend its title as BTCC manufacturer champions in 2015. The three-year programme to race the MG6 GT with Triple Eight has proved so successful both on and off track that there was little doubt we would return in 2015.”

MG’s BTCC engineering partner, Triple Eight Race Engineering, is working on an exciting new-look driver line-up for 2015, which will see the MG6 GT’s re-branded and given a fresh look, courtesy of a host of new sponsors joining the team next year.

Cheyne continued: “The MG brand is iconic and Triple Eight are the most successful team in the history of BTCC, as such together we are an attractive proposition and believe we will be in contention to defend our title next year. The BTCC has never been in such good shape and with a full grid containing a wide range of manufacturers and models, plus rising attendance and viewing figures, I am excited at the prospects for 2015 for MG, Triple Eight, our drivers, sponsors and of course our loyal and growing worldwide MG fan base.

“The BTCC programme has been a key part in re-establishing the MG brand in the UK and also globally. It has raised awareness of the brand with TV, online and press coverage that is not only followed in the UK but also across the world. The MG6 GT race car was designed to resemble the road car as closely as possible and in addition to the on-track programme, we have also operated a very successful mobile showroom next to the track, so BTCC fans can see and touch the latest MG6 and MG3 products.”

Triple Eight Race Engineering Managing Director and co-founder, Ian Harrison, commented: “We’re very much looking forward to next year, our fourth with MG and 19th in the BTCC. Over the past three years we’ve taken more race wins than any other constructor and manufacturer, and next year we are intent on extending that run of form. There’s little doubt that 2015 will be even more competitive than this year as teams get a handle on developing their cars, but we’re confident we’ve assembled the right elements to take it to the other teams and ensure we’re in the mix by the end of the year.”

MG is currently the fastest growing automotive brand in the UK with sales up 573 percent year to date (SMMT data). The MG6 is already a favourite with MG owners for its drivability, affordability and exceptionally high levels of standard equipment included and was also voted by owners to be the Best Handling and sixth overall Best Car to Own in the 2014 Auto Express Driver Power Awards.

  • A Bridge too far on the ‘Mud, Mud, Glorious Mud Walk’ aka Sunday Walk at Mottisfont

Sunday 16th November saw 14 members set off from The Mill Arms at Dunbridge for a 3 mile walk. Although cloudy, the rain had stopped and it was very mild. We headed across the railway line and then North East towards Mottisfont and Abbey Farm. From Abbey Farm we joined the footpath to Spearywell – actually the footpath was a very muddy field with an incline, not easy walking and by the time we got to Spearywell our boots must have weighed an extra 5 kilos each with all the mud stuck to them. There were however, a few useful puddles to do some cleaning!

The walk from Butts Green back towards Dunbridge was challenging, a lot of low lying ground and with the amount of rain recently it was difficult to see where we were going at times. At one stage we came across a small railway sleeper, mostly submerged and that was our small bridge to cross – although John Anderson seemed to think he was water skiing!!

    Fiona

Once past Spearywell the terrain was better through Cadbury Farm as we headed towards Dummer Copse. A sharp left at the start of the woods took us along some very slippery terrain before reaching Butts Green for the customary team photo on the footbridge courtesy of Andrew Kettle which will be on the Web Site shortly.

17 of us had lunch at The Mill Arms and it was certainly worth walking 3 miles for! The pub was very welcoming and as it has a Skittle Alley we thought that this may be a good venue for a mid monthly meet to include an ‘in-house’ skittles match. Thanks to John & Linda Anderson for supplying us all with a route map – certainly a good walk and one to think about again for next year.
