Employers are looking for graduates who are flexible and analytical, with adaptable skills that can be applied in a multitude of ways. They want people who can think critically and creatively, who can reason and who have informed opinions. That is the foundation of the Bachelor of Arts degree at UOW.The degree is made up of subjects in the humanities. The Bachelor of Arts at Liverpool campus allows you to take either a single major plus a minor and electives, or a double major.

MAJORS

Historygo.uow.edu.au/barts-hist

Historians study the everyday lives of people who lived in the past by looking at objects and documents that have survived throughout the years. Core subjects will teach you broad histories of specific Australian, Asian and European societies. In your second and third years you will be able to specialise and study topics in greater depth, including specific historical examinations of empires, the political and social impacts of wars, and the development of the State.

Sociologygo.uow.edu.au/barts-soc

Sociology is the study of society: it examines social life, cultural and social change, and the social causes and consequences of human behaviour. Specific areas of study include social theory and social research methods, social policy and the state, gender, sexuality and the body, crime and punishment, race and ethnicity, social class, families and intimacy, social interaction, social movements, globalisation, development and social change, and media and popular culture. Sociology will give you an understanding of cultural diversity and an awareness of injustices and inequality.

The mantra of Facebook is ‘make the world more open and connected’ and I agree with that—it’s always fun to help make that happen.

I always thought I didn’t need to learn coding to the level I did but I’m glad that I did and was pushed into it by my lecturers at UOW. My degree actually laid the foundations of how modern operating systems, programming and computers work. At Facebook especially there is a big emphasis on the scripting and coding.

We get feedback all the time telling us how we have helped people achieve something, to fundraise or help a community. That is inspiring and lets me know that what I do behind the scenes helps the world.Cooper Lees Production Engineer, Facebook Bachelor of Internet Science and Technology 2006

As part of the University of Wollongong’s vision for the South Western Sydney Campus, the University will open a School of Nursing to encourage the next generation of nurses to study, train, work, and undertake research in the Liverpool area. The need for nurses Australia-wide is growing, especially in expanding regions like Sydney’s south west. A growing, ageing population, and an increasing incidence of chronic diseases have made qualified nurses more important than ever to our future, and the Western Sydney Nursing Education and Research Centre (WeSNER) will help secure that future.

The proximity of WeSNER to Liverpool Hospital, one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, will provide some opportunities to contribute to the Health and Education precinct within Liverpool. About 30% of current employment in Liverpool’s city centre is within its broader Health and Education precinct, which has been identified by Liverpool City Council and NSW Government as a key strategic asset and opportunity.

The local health districts including South West Sydney Local Health District and other healthcare providers present great opportunities for placements for nursing students to enhance their clinical learning.

The University of Wollongong has earned a proud reputation for nursing education with the School of Nursing at the University’s Wollongong campus successfully contributing to the excellence and efficiency of nursing education since 1991. The major new nursing training facility WeSNER, to be open for the start of the 2019 academic year, will be of similar scale to the existing School of Nursing at Wollongong and is planned to accommodate around 700 nursing students. In addition, WeSNER will provide a platform for the UOW School of Nursing to expand on its established research strengths and develop further collaborative relationships at all levels for the benefit of the region.

The state-of-the-art nursing learning, teaching and research centre will focus on person-centred models of care and will showcase the latest in technology such as virtual environments to provide authentic learning experiences for students. A WeSNER Health Clinic is also planned to provide a broad range of person-centred health services to address the health needs of the Liverpool region. The proposed WeSNER Health Clinic will provide professionally supervised health services to the general public while educating students in health care practices.
