Hello Everyone,

As you all realize, with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic the communication of the club has been quite lacking. I do apologize for this; it is nobody’s fault but my own. I believe we are going to be able to get things back on track with the first of our new High Tide formats, this issue will be called “Low Tide.” Along with everything going on, there were changes to the infra-structure of our Officers, with the loss of Fred Barclay who relocated to Michigan for work in March with his wife Michele. Gregg Rehak moved from Rear Commodore to Vice Commodore. The Rear Com-modore position was filled by Randy Kempowski. Andy and Coleen Martin along with Karen (Kiki) Kilman will take over the apparel that Michele was handling. With the opening of the bar, Paul Mozejewski, Kevin Klusman and Mary Karwacki worked very diligently on setting up the new POS system that was acquired last year and working toward full integra-tion with Quickbooks. This project has been on going for several years. With the reopening of the bar it was decided to move forward with the new systems and accounting practices. This also, after many years of service, resulted in the end of till reading. I would like to thank Rob Kilman and the group of till readers for waking up eve-ry morning for all those years. Now that we are getting into the accomplishments, a thank you is in order for so many things that happened since January. First, I would like to start with the 2020 Installation of Offic-ers: Once again it was a wonderful evening with great food catered by the team at Joe’s K Ranch. I would like to thank Cheryl Rybka and her team: Mary Klamrowski, Mike and Dona Cieczka, Homero and Monica Noboa and Jerry Kotarek and crew for a beautiful hall and great music. Also, a special thanks to the newly elected Mem-ber of the year, Mary Karwacki. I would like to thank our new fleet captain Kyle Nichols for a great Pier Bidding with an exceptionally large amount of harbor move-ment. I would also like to thank him and his team, Kevin Klusman and Rick Klamrowski for the newly digitized pier bidding system. As I mentioned in our last High-Tide back in January we were going

to lift the Gas dock. This needed to be done to bring the harbor

electrical out of the water so we could continue with electrical safety

upgrades. I was amazed to see Randy Kempowski and his crew lift

the center pier in record time thanks to his ingenuity and planning.

After the deck was raised, I would like to thank Warren Cruise for

finishing up the decking and Tom Ciurlik and his crew for staining.

Overall the project went smoothly and looks great.

We now have new Gazebo Grills – Tom and Meg Ciurlik with installation by Mike Trock; supported by proceeds from this past weekends “Breakfast at your boat” (run by Ciurliks with support from Kristen Nichols, Bob Smith and Steve and Debbie Anderson, and deliveries were made by Will Nich-ols), as well as the Pier Bidding lunch and 50/50 raffle (courtesy Tom and Meg) and the wonderful hot dog lunch served to those down working on their boats (also courtesy Tom and Meg). Please clean the grills after use, it will be greatly appreciated by all. Sadly, the Area we call the “Gold Coast” did not survive the winter and the concrete sidewalk col-lapsed directly east of the gazebo. After evaluation, the board made the decision that it would have to be replaced as an emergency repair. Since the majority of the parts needed to replace the electri-cal were already purchased last year, we also decided to remove the existing electrical and bury it under the new sidewalk. I would like to give a special thanks to Josh Haase and crew for making the concrete happen in record time. Did you also notice the nice new patio that was added under the gazebo? Pretty cool. I would also like to thank John Simons, Wayne Gestwicki, Bob Sandretto and all of our electricians and volunteers that helped finish up the electrical improvements. We did hire an outside contractor to do some work to the main service. While we are talking electrical, you may notice that Electrical Pedestals are being replaced in other areas of the harbor as well. While we do not have much cashflow at this time, this equipment was previously purchased and has little cost to the club to install. We now have a Waverunner refueling station – Thank you to Mike Cieczka and Tom Hoffa for in-stalling and Josh Haase for donating. I would like to thank Tom Ciurlik, Dennis Anich and their crew for refinishing the bar and hall floor during the shutdown. I can say a lot happened during the shutdown, and there was always some sort of improvement or planning activity going on throughout the shutdown. I would like to thank Jamie Pender and Kevin Klusman for revamping the entire sound system in the hall. This is a pretty cool upgrade and it eliminated the majority of the mess in the “radio corner”. This project was amazingly made cash neutral by donations from Jamie and the sale of the old re-ceiver. The basement has been high and dry, and then the water started to come up even more. I would like to thank Josh once again for bringing his crew in and adding some additional drain tile behind the Beer cooler. It is now very dry in the basement. I would like to thank Kris and Mike Herrington for donating the flowers for the grounds this year. Kris did a wonderful job of getting everything cleaned up. Patty Williams repainted the flower pots around the Gazebo base and they are looking good. With high water levels, we also had water refill some of the plumbing around the harbor during the winter and then when it froze, resulting in broken pipes. I would like to thank John McCliment for stepping up and handling all of the plumbing repairs. I would really like to thank the guys that are working on the Harbor entrance. This is an overwhelm-ing project and although there has been a lot of help, I would like thank Randy Kempowski for get-ting us pointed in the right direction and getting this project off the ground. I would like to thank Gregg Rehak for stepping up and working with the contactors to keep things going, Gregg along with Butch Web have done the majority of the heavy lifting on the project and were down there work-ing almost every day they could. We really owe this group of men our gratitude. There is still time to help as the finishing touches on this project still need to be completed.

Page 4: South Milwaukee Yacht Club...the flowers and trees. Also, to Patty Williams for donating the flower pots and flowers by the gazebo. Again, thank you to everyone! Fleet Captain Update

Now for the elephant in this letter. We need to get into what we expected the harbor entrance project to cost us and what it actually did cost. Unfortunately, as many of you know or may have heard, this project is significantly over budget. Several items contributed to the cost over runs, but the major item was the weather. The weather delayed the project which was projected to take one month and extended over 2.5 months. Big Lake Marine actually did very well and tracked only slightly over-budget. They pounded steel for a total of 20 days which tracked very closely to our estimate. What we did not consider was the loss of fill material due to the storms as they were working. The major cost overruns came with the rework to get the site ready to continue working after each storm. This work was done by Sievert trucking. Over the course of the project Sievert had to do several major repairs to the outer wall and the en-trance area, costing somewhere in the neighborhood of 80-100K. So, as the rest of the club may be wondering what is going on, the board has been working hard and meeting twice a month. We are trying to come up with the best recommendations possible for the membership going forward. If you can decipher what I am trying to say above, is that with everything that is going on, our cashflow is getting dangerously low. If you notice, most of the projects above were done with donations or are very low budget items. The COVID pandemic forced us to shutter our main revenue stream for what unfortunately is some of our most profitable months of the year. We are planning on this being the focus of the July Membership meeting which at this point we are planning on having. Please be prepared for an in-depth discussion. Meanwhile be certain to only spend money on approved items. Now for some exciting news, Boat Blessing is coming up Sunday, June 28th . It will be a smaller venue but please plan on coming down. Jerry K will be playing in his one-man band. Many thanks to the travel lift crews that got the boats safely back into the harbor: Greg Puetz, Wayne Gestwicki, Bob Smith, Tom Hoffa, Rick Klamrowski, Kyle Nichols and all who helped. We are also planning on having a small party on July 11th with a shrimp boil and band. More to come on that subject. See you at the club,

Bryan Gahan - Still Water SMYC Commodore.

Coleen’s Corner— From the Galley of Coleen Martin Maple Teriyaki Salmon Fillets 1/3 cup apple juice 1/3 cup maple syrup 3 Tablespoons soy sauce 2 Tablespoons finely minced onion (or 1 Tbl dried minced onion) 1 Tablespoon finely minced fresh ginger ( or 1 tsp ground ginger) 1-2 garlic cloves, minced (or 1/2 tsp granulated garlic) 4 salmon fillets (about 2 pounds) In a bowl combine the first 6 ingredients. Remove 1/3 cups for basting. Pour remaining marinade into a large resealable plastic bag. Add salmon; setl bag and turn to coat. Refrigerate 1-3 hours. Drain and discard marinade. Grill salmon over med-heat for 14-18 minutes, basting occasionally, or until fish flakes easily with a fork. Or bake at 400" for 14-18 minutes. This is a mildly flavored salmon that is easy to make with ingredients you have on hand and awesome with fresh caught salmon!!! Enjoy! Have a great week!

Upcoming events—help needed

We are quite happy to announce that he Blessing of The Fleet will be taking place this year on Sunday, June 28

th. We are looking for volunteers, Regular and Associate Members to

help with this annual event. Following Mass we need to rearrange the hall and need help setting up the tables, cutting up desserts and getting food ready. Help is also needed to serve dinner which we anticipate will be approximately 4pm. We would like to get an approximate head count for dinner. There are sign-up sheets posted on the bulletin board near the ladies room for volunteers as well as dinner attendance. With so many summer events cancelled this year we are hoping for a good turnout. There will also be music this year following dinner. There is a flyer attached to this newsletter with all of the details. By the way, you don’t need to have a boat to come down and enjoy the entire day! Cross your fingers for good weather.

If you have any questions please give Barb Nowak a call at 414 762-5541 Hope to see you

Safe boating is no accident. Know what you need to be safe,

get it done and then enjoy your time out on the water.

From the US Coast Guard Auxiliary:

Why Do This?

In a word – safety. You are left with the peace of mind that your boat meets minimum safety standards and that in an emergency, you will have the necessary equipment to save lives and summon help. Finally, your insurance rates may be lowered – check with your agent.

Where Can I Get More Information?

Go to the Coast Guard Auxiliary website or google Virtual Vessel Safety Check, and perform your own examination of your boat.

Be Safe and Watch out for Pirates!!
