4 At Speed - January 2004

Peter Doane sup-plied this publicationwith many articlesabout his experienceas a crew memberfor the Lexus WorldChallenge Team, however Peter also had an opportunity torace, at least once, this year in his MkI,MR2.

...Other than trying not to run over mystep-son Chris (who was following us onhis Ducati motorcycle), the drive down toWV was uneventful. We arrived at thetrack around 1:30 PM in order to get agood place in line for the gate opening at5:30. Other rigs, that arrived later, set upparallel lines (not enough room for onelong continuous line), but then bargedtheir way ahead of others when the "lan-drush" began. When we got into the pad-dock, 85% of it was already roped off withsigns reserving spots for drivers thatweren't there (even though the rules statethat you can only reserve one other spotfor someone else). Some folks hadwalked in with tape/rope and reservedspots before the gates opened. Two peo-ple taped off 8-10 spots (where I usuallypark) for the Spec Miata crowd. Withupwards of 300 entrants expected, other-wise decent/nice/generous people turninto selfish demons about getting enoughspace for their racecars. Thanks to somegood friends from the Southern NewJersey region, we got a reasonably goodspot and even managed to save one foranother MR2 coming down from CT(Jake) and his Prelude buddy to share.

Friday 28 Aug: The test day was alsouneventful. I ran 4 of the 5 available ses-sions (using the older set of dry tires)because I hadn't driven/raced in so long. The Phantom Grip seemed to be givinglots of bite in the slower/twistier sections ofthe track, but I had no lap times to confirmthat with. There was a mild amount ofundersteer, but not enough to warrantchanging out to the stiffer rear sway bar.

One short rain shower drenched every-thing while I was changing the brake padsand rotors. I used the last session (trackwas already dry again) to bed them in.Afterwards, I also switched to the newerset of dry/slick tires for the 2 qualifyingsessions that would be run the next day.Jake arrived later than night and unloadedhis MR2 before dropping off his trailer out-side the track and heading to their hotel.

Saturday 29 Aug: My class was runningin Race Group 7 (of 9), so getting up brightand early was not planned. A couple offriends (Bill and Norm) from the MR2 mes-sage board on the internet (who werecoming to watch for the day) arrived earlyand signaled this event by running overour little barbecue grill with their SUV.Since Norm had come all the way fromArkansas on an MR2 part/car buying tripand offered me the use of a "special"Engine Control Unit (ECU) from the old(back when my car was new) FirehawkShowroom Stock professional racingseries, I wasn't too upset about losing thesleep, or the barbecue. The car felt evenlivelier with the new ECU during the firstqualifying session. Having no rev limiteralso meant I could pull an extra 500-600rpms and that allowed me to abstain fromupshifting just before corner #3 and wellpast the exits of corner #8 and #10 (ratherthan just before) where it had been awk-ward to do so before. Despite how muchbetter the car felt, my times in the morningqualifying session were still a few tenthsslower than my best ever at this track andthat put me in 15th place (out of 34 total)for the start of Sunday's race. I let anoth-

er MR2 driver (David) try the FirehawkECU for the second qualifying session. He couldn't get used to not having a revlimit and was a second slower. I set a laptime within 0.001 sec of my first sessiontime (even w/o the special ECU and withan engine stumble in corner #1), but thatwas only good for a 21st (out of 32 total)starting place for Monday's race. Normand Bill took tire pressures and tempera-tures for me after each session. The firstreadings were messed up by the slow in-lap, but the second set was pretty good. Iput the Firehawk ECU back in my car.

Sunday 30 Aug: My normal nut and boltcheck Sunday morning revealed that onepart of the new front sway bar end linkswas too long and had been contacting theframe. This bent/split the strut tube brack-et, but that was easily fixed by welding ona washer to beef up the bracket hole areaand cutting off some of the threadedshank (after removing the jam nut).

There were 2 pace laps before the racebecause our group had so many cars in it.Luckily, the RX-7 right ahead of me pulledoff at the end of the 1st pace lap. This leftme a nice big gap to fill in the row aheadof me. I passed the other RX-7 (remain-ing in the row ahead of me) in the run upto the first corner, but the white MR2 (AJ)that started next to me also got a goodstart and nosed ahead slightly. Someonewas really slowing down the outside lanein corner #1 because I managed to getahead of AJ and the CRX and Golf thatwere ahead of him by staying to theinside. The Golf snuck by me on theinside of the third corner, but I got himback in corner #4.

On the second lap, a blue CRX and a240SX passed me going into corner #1.Another CRX (balck/white/red) got a runon me down the main straight at the startof lap 4, but moving to the middle of thetrack spooked him enough to keep himfrom passing. It worked again the nextlap, but when we got to corner #5, the

CRX had become too impatient. Hetagged me in the left rear corner and sentme into a quick ¼ spin. 5-7 cars went bybefore I got going again.

While my tires were still clearing thecrap/dirt they picked up off the track, anIntegra got a run on me that let him gopast into corner #10. A Showroom StockCivic SI follow the Integra past coming outof corner #10. The battery on the videocamera went dead at this point, so the restof the race is blurred a bit by my failingmemory. Either I caught up againwith/passed those 2 cars, or fell back intothe clutches of 2 others, but when I spunin corner #6A a few laps later (of my ownaccord) the car right behind me managedto get by on the inside, but the other justclipped me trying to go around the out-side. I continued pretty much on my ownand finished in 19th place. The car that hitme after my second spin had bent backabout 10" of the right part of the rearbumper and deranged the exhaust that Ihad just moved to the right side (becausethe sound meter had moved across thetrack). With the help of my wife Dawn andmy old workmate Gregg (who came towatch with his wife and kids), we wereable to peel away the plastic bumpercover, remove some of the foam, beat thesteel part reasonably back into place, andthen reattach the bumper cover withtape/wire/bungee cord. Luckily theexhaust wasn't damaged so just reattach-ing it was required. The CRX driver alsocame by to apologize for nudging me offcourse, so I didn't hold a grudge or blame

the damage on him. Itwas on the wrong sideof the car anyway.

When AJ was ready topack up his MR2 andgo home because hisclutch had started slip-ping so badly in therace, I grabbed myused spare clutch andseveral of us jumpedon/under his car (AJ isnot a mechanic) to pullout the transmission, but his clutch was not worn. I explainedthat I had had similar slipping problemsfrom overheating because the step in theflywheel was cut too tall. AJ and one ofthe others drove 4 hours round trip Sunnight (returning at 1:30AM Mon) to getanother flywheel (with a lower step) andwe all installed it early the next day.

Monday 1 Sept: For the first time sinceFri afternoon, the skies started to look likethey might let loose with some of the pre-cipitation that had been forecast for thewhole weekend. That meant a very ner-vous bunch of drivers trying to decidewhich tires to go with for Race Group 7.Especially since I had not yet had the newrain tires mounted yet. In the end we allkept our dry/slicks tires on, but a fewdrops falling while we sat on the grid did-n't make us any more certain about thatchoice. AJ qualified 19th for this race, sohe was right in front of me for the start.Someone in front of him really boggeddown right at the green flag so I had a lotof momentum built up on them. I eitherhad to back down and loose all thatmomentum, or take advantage of what lit-tle track there was to the right side.Because I could keep 2 wheels on thetrack and because the dirt only lasted a bitbefore pit-out gave me lots of pavementfor all 4 tires and because I could tell therewas a gap to slide into once pit-out ended,I made the move to the right of AJ.Without all of those factors in my favor, I

would NOT have tried such a wild move.Luckily it all work out very well, for me.Unfortunately, when I got into the clearand looked into my mirrors on the waydown to turn #1, all hell was breakingloose behind me. AJ's MR2 was spinningaround like a top and there was a hugedust cloud behind him with other carsspinning in and out of view. Not surpris-ingly, they called out the pace car andthrew the double yellow flags. I was a lit-tle afraid I had caused that entire ruckuswith my run through the dirt, but no onepointed a black flag my way. I could bare-ly make out that the lights on the pace carhad gone out after only one full coursecaution lap so I got a good jump on theGolf behind me, but didn't make up anyground to the CRX (same one who puntedme off the day before) ahead of me. Therest of the race was pretty lonely exceptfor Jake's MR2 that stayed about 7-8 carlengths behind me the whole time. 4 carspassed Jake and me one by one and usu-ally at the end of the straight (I hate nothaving the power to keep my hard wonstart places). One of them fell off the trackin turn 6A during the last lap so I got to goby again and there wasn't enough time forhim to get it back. I wound up finishing in16th place.

I was expecting horrible traffic on the drivehome (because we raced so late in theday), but there really wasn't any at all.

6 At Speed - January 2004

Road Rally2003 Pine Barrens Express (PBX)

This November, my brother and I compet-ed in the Pine Barrens Express (PBX)road rally for the second time. This yearwe entered my brother's Eagle Talon. Wealso skipped the Novice Class eventhough we could have stayed in. Whenwe received the general instructions, therewas one big change, closed controls. Thismeant that we would not be stopping atthe check points, and the check pointworkers would be timing the cars at speedin the Pine Barrens at night. The smallerchanges would be a seat swap, my broth-er Jeff was driving and I was the navigator. We purchased an Alfa rally clock at thelast minute for this event. We also mount-ed the Hella driving lights we won last yearto a homemade bracket attached to Jeff'sfront bumper and license plate frame.

This would be my first rally as a navigator,so I was fairly nervous. So this year, wearrived early and had a more completeplan to go after the always-elusive zeros. After check in and registration, we found aplace to sit in the fire hall. I took out thecalculator I found at Wal-Mart for $8 or so,since it had large buttons, a 12 digit dis-play and is simple to use it is now the pri-mary rally calculator. Jeff went off to setour clock as soon as I started calculatingthe perfect times to be at each turn. Thecalculations are fairly simple, but therewere a ton of them. The instructionsincluded some mileage reference, I thinkone of the instructions had a missingmileage delta, but they are easy to calcu-late if you have the overall mileage for allthe instructions. So there I was punchingaway at the calculator for just about theentire time before the rally start. I hadalmost finished, but fatigue was taking itstoll. I had all but a small section of thesecond half to go, and I would finish it atthe break. We had the perfect time toeach control down to the thousandth of aminute for most of the rally. We were set,now all we needed to do is follow theinstructions perfectly.

At the start of the odometer leg, wemissed the second turn (the first one afterleaving the parking lot). It was a hard tosee turn off the road into what looked likea driveway or yard. We were warnedabout it being hard to see, so we took the

turn early and ended up having to drivethe car down off a curb and into a parkinglot, so we went back and started over.Luckily the odometer check is not timedand we started over. The second timethough, we turned at the proper spot, andit felt as though we were driving throughsomeone's backyard at first, but it quicklybecame a real road. This is the sameroad we used at the very end of last year'sPBX and in the daylight I can see why I feltas though we had to be very wrong.

The first section of the rally was fairlystraightforward. Mostly fading daylightand the easy to understand route instruc-tions were a big help. The first four legswere great, we scored 3, 11, 2 and 9 at thefirst four check points. For reference our11 was 0.11 minutes (6.6 seconds) earlySo at this point my confidence is up, at thecheck points we are close enough to knowthat we are very close and that we aredoing well, although we don't know exact-ly how well, since we are just flying by andnot stopping. Then all of a sudden I makea big mistake; I misread the clock andbelieve that we are way too early. I tellJeff to slow down, and then finally stop. Then my brain finds the right digits on theclock and route instructions. We are waylate. My confidence is shot, my egobruised and we are moving quickly thoughthe pines. We get to the checkpoint andrun through for 184 (1:50.4 late). Oh wellwe suck it up and continue and since weare pushing hard we take another turn alittle too early and end up off course. Wemeet some other rallyists who made thesame mistake, and caravan back to thelast spot we knew we were on course. This set us back about 22 minutes or so. Igrabbed the time allowance (TA) paper-work and took the max TA (19.5 minutes). We ended the first half with an 18 and a 4.

At the break I completed the calculationsas we ate. The second half started well.We had a fun time scoring a 4 and a 6 onthe first two legs. Then we met "LakeFred". "Lake Fred" is a pair of large water-holes that were roughly circular and about25 feet in diameter. The emergency signhad us cross on the right of the first holeand the left of the second. This did not gowell for us. My brother's car's engine got

drenched good. Jeff limped the car out ofthe second part of the lake and down theroad about 100 yards. This is where wesat. Jeff tried to keep the car running. Iwas directing traffic to pass us by. I keptchecking to see how things were with Jeff, and letting the other rallyists know wewere OK. After running on only 2 cylin-ders out of 4 for a while, enough unburntfuel passed into the exhaust and ignitedso that the exhaust was glowing hot. I toldJeff and he got out and let the engine stallto see for himself. While directing yetanother car by, Jeff yells to me "See if theyhave a fire extinguisher. The car is onfire." So I asked the next car by. Ofcourse it isn't something everyone carries, and the next car didn't have one. I ranback to Jeff after this and we try to put outthe fire. It was one of the rubber exhausthangers. It had overheated and started toburn. We tried to get it with sand fromboth sides of the car, but weren't havingmuch luck. Then Jeff grabbed on of thebottles of cranberry juice and splashed outthe fire. After this Jeff restarts the car, andwe try to drive a little, we want airflow overthe hot exhaust. So we are limping downthe road with everyone else passing us by.Then it happens, the engine dries out andwe nearly get whiplash from the suddenboost of speed. Jeff backs off since thereare a couple of cars that just passed us.He backed away and hit it hard again andwe go racing by the pair of cars in front ofus. I fill out the TA form again, we areabout half an hour late, take 19.5 minutesand still we are down at least 10 minutes.Jeff is driving as fast as he thinks is safe, and then checkpoint, and another. Twomaxes in a row (200 points each). Thenone more and we are way late still (128points). We finally are getting close to ontime and we miss a turn by a few feet.Unfortunately the car directly behind uspassed us and we couldn't get by. I knewwe were about 30 late and we got a 31 onthe final leg.

We finished the rally with an 800. 10thplace overall and 8th in our class. Not badfor the adventure we had. Next year weare going for a top 5 overall finish. I thinkwe can pull it off.

Joe Pilato is the 2003 B-Stock Solo 2champion. I had the oportunity to sharea few emails with Joe and asked himwhat motivated him to start racing in soloracing.

“In 1997, when my sister-in-law lived inOhio, my wife and I visited her and herhusband and I roped them into attendingthe Runoffs at Mid-Ohio. Absolutely thetightest road racing I have ever seen. That experience is what prompted me tojoin the SCCA in the first place. Sincethen, I always mark Speed Channel'sbroadcasts of the runoff on my calen-dar...

One of the best things about runningSolo II is being able to spend time withother people who are also car and drivingfanatics. Most likely everyone at anautocross daydreamed at some point

(like I did) about power-sliding through aturn under full power with perfect control.I automatically feel common ground witheveryone out there on a Sunday morningeven before speaking with them.”

One other person whom hasbeen missing from our Solo 2 programtoward the end of the 2003 season, KurtSchenk, has recently informed me of hisintentions to return in ‘04. Kurt is alsoone of the volunteers to lend assistanceto our Solo 2 efforts.

New to the South Jersey’s Board ofDirectors (BoD), Grace Huntzinger, willbe taking over for Steve as timing guru-dude. (Yeah it’s ok, dudes can be ladiestoo.) I was present at the timing meetingheld at PF Chang’s in Voorhees, NJ.,where Grace, Keith Huntzinger,Grace’s husband, and Steve hashed outthe specific hardware details and brain-stormed on how to improve upon the sys-tem Steve devoloped. Keith’s “bag” ishardware devolopment, so he is working

out that part of the system. Grace, on-the-other-hand, will be sifting throughlines of code on the software side. Whentalking to Grace about the idea of startingfresh, she expressed that she didn’t wantto throw away anything until she had achance to look at what Steve had creat-ed. Grace seemed confident that Steve’ssystem was robust and stable enough toaccomodate everything she hoped toenhance.

A few other volunteers have stepped for-ward. Brian Heun and his wife havebeen regulars at the Camden and Atcosites for the past two years. Brianseemed interested in helping any way hecould, and I’m sure his services will beused fully during the 2004 season.Incidentally, the Heun’s share a bur-gundy colored M-edition Mazda Miata.

Subaru of America will not be a sponsorfor the 2004 year. Subaru plans onbecoming more involved with Club andPro Rally events next year. We areextremely fortunate to have such a great

company give our club generous prizemoney for two years straight. Sure thismay be a disappointment to many plan-ning on placing in the top 5 PAX times in‘04, but be of good cheer, we might haveanother sponsor for the 2004 Solo 2 sea-son. Regional Executive (RE), JD Kinghas informed the members during themeetings that he’s working on a fewthings. We might not see a “SubaruChallenge” next year, but we may see anew, (fill in the blank) ______ Challenge.

The South Jersey Region, Sports CarClub of America is open to all people andbusinesses willing to lend a helpinghand, or giving a sponsorship dollar, toour autocross program. If you’re inter-ested contact:

Two different polls were conducted ontwo different websites regarding two dif-ferent driving events.

One poll conducted on the sjr_autoxyahoo group gained information abouthow many folks would be intersted in alocal school held by this region. Of thetwelve people who responded so far tothe autocross school, all of them wereinterested in attending if and when SJRdecides to host one. The proposed datewould most likely be in March or April, and the cost would be around twenty-fiveto thirty-five dollars.http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sjr_autox/

A parallel web poll is being conducted atthe following address for those whomaren’t members of the autocross mes-sage board.http://www.sjr-scca.org/autoxpoll.html

The other poll conducted on “phax”,philly’s autoX yahoo group, gatheredinformation regarding interest in theSCCA hosting a Driver’s Education,a.k.a. track day, at Pocono Raceway. Todate thirty-nine people voted. Twenty-two Voted “Yes” they were intersted inattending, zero voted “no”, one voted, “Iattend other HPDEs/track days so I don’tcare”, fourteen voted, “Maybe if I learned

more about it.”, and two voted “Yes andas a licenced competition driver, I wish toinstruct. This poll was concluded onJanuary 13, 2004.http://groups.yahoo.com/group/phax/

In speaking with Ed Jenks, newly electedtri-region President, he mentioned that agroup called Performance Driver’s

Education (PDA) will be co-sponsoring an event atPocono. This will helpPDA fill all the slots andhelp the SCCA learn abouthosting track day events.

Driving StuffDrifting / Polls

Whether you love the idea or hate it, the-fact of the matter is the SCCA will sponsora professional series of drifting referred toas D1. Professional drivers, some fromthe US, and others from Japan will con-verge thisyear toshow offtheir carcontrol andc o m p e t e ,not againstthe clock, but insteadto attract apannel ofjudges.

Gayle and Iwent to anevent in July atSummit Point, where a driftingschool was insession. Beforehitting the trackstudents spenta great deal oftime learning inboth a class-room sessionand at the skid pad to get the “hang” of it.Then, in between some normal racingevents, students took to the track starting

at Turn 4 and finishingthrough turn 9. If nothingelse the event attractedonlookers. Some verbal-ly critical, others justoooohed and aaaahed.

Mostly impressive waswatching a driver in aHonda Civic. As you wellknow, Civics are frontwheel drive and unlessyou’re driving back-

wards, almost impossible to do donuts in.However there were some rear wheeldrive cars that could not match theamount of slip angle this guy was achiev-ing.

If you’re like me, when it snows, you seekout unplowed parking lots and start driftingaround. Lower speed perhaps, but I’msure the smile is the same on your face asit is on the driver’s who drift. WhetherDrifting is in fact a sport does not reallymatter, what matters though is makingsure these legal motorsports events arekept open for business and we keep thereal fun off the street and on the track.
