PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. We are

looking forward to enjoying 2013 at South Hanover

The start of the New Year is historically a time for reflection,

anticipation, and celebration. It is also symbolic for schools

as being close to the middle of the school year. Please use

your student(s) on their progress. We look forward to making

the 2nd half of this school year successful.

I am hopeful that we have limited delays or closings during

these winter months and that the flu bug stays clear of your

household!

Have a great January!

Respectfully,

Justin M. Hanula

UPCOMING EVENTS

ELEMENTARY TRACK SIGN-UP – FEBRUARY 4-5, 2013

Elementary track is open to all students in Grades 1-5, as well as students in Grade 6. Please be on the

lookout for more information this month.

ROCK CLIMBING WALL

We have started a new initiative to help increase the awareness of healthy eating and physical activity.

Students, who do their best to eat their entire lunch, are permitted to climb the rock wall during the last

15 minutes of their lunch period. We have seen positive results with the majority of students

participating in rock climbing as well as eating their fruits and vegetables.

TESTING DATES – PENNSYLVANIA SYSTEM OF SCHOOL ASSESSMENT (PSSA)

Please keep the weeks of March 11th and April 8th through April 21st free of appointments and family

trips. Students will be participating in the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment tests.

March 11-15, 2013 PSSA Writing Grade 5

April 8-19, 2013 PSSA Reading and Math Grades 3, 4 and 5

April 22-26, 2013 PSSA Science Grade 4

NURSE’S NOTES

DISTRICT KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION – JANUARY 31, 2013

We are currently organizing incoming kindergarten classes and need your help. There are so many new families in our area and we do not always receive information about the children moving into South Hanover Township. If you know of any new family with age eligible children, please ask them to call us at 566-2564. The children need to be five (5) years old by August 31, 2013.

OUTDOOR RECESS – CLOTHING

Snow and wet conditions mean that appropriate clothing must be worn for recess. Teachers will not allow students to go outside if they do not have warm coats, hats and gloves. To play in the snow, students MUST have snow pants and boots. It’s also a good idea to label all your child’s clothing.

COUNSELOR’S CORNER

MESSAGES FROM THE SCHOOL COUNSELOR, MRS. KALLOZ

COUNSELOR HIGHLIGHTS Last month concluded problem solving lessons in 4th grade. This month, Mrs. Kalloz will teach lessons about bullying prevention to 2nd grade students. Please welcome Miss Stacia Melenchek, a graduate student from Shippensburg University. She will be interning with Mrs. Kalloz for the spring semester!

NO NAME CALLING WEEK South Hanover will celebrate No Name Calling Week (bullying prevention awareness) January 21-25. During this week students will have the opportunity to sign a “no name calling” pledge. South Hanover will host a variety of activities and events to promote a bully free environment. More information will be sent home about these upcoming events.

HELPING HANDS Last month, students participated in a field trip to visit the residents at Country Meadows. A BIG thank-you to all of the parent volunteers! This month, students will be encouraged to complete individual service projects to benefit their school, home, and community. Card Covers to support St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital, South Hanover’s Counseling Office, and Helping Hands Projects. Students may drop off these materials to Mrs. Kalloz in Room 122.

CLICK Mrs. Kalloz will run an 8 week group for 2nd graders called “Click.” We will meet from 8:10 – 8:45 am once a week until the group concludes. Transportation is to be determined by each family. ONLY students who have submitted a signed permission form may attend. We will meet on: 1/23; 1/30; 2/6; 2/13; 2/20; 2/27; 3/6; 3/13. If there is inclement weather, and LDSD is closed or delayed, Click will be cancelled. The snow make-up session is 3/20.

Counselor’s Challenge: 2ND Marking Period November 13th was World Kindness Day. Students, write a letter to Mrs. Kalloz about what you already do or will begin to do to show kindness to others. Each entry will be entered into a random drawing for a prize. Please submit your letters to Mrs. Kalloz by January 17th, 2013.

2013 Is Here !!!

After a much anticipated and well

deserved break for the students,

school will be back in session. We

are sure this New Year will

provide new challenges and

hopefully many new joys.

As we strive to start the year off

well, we hope that students will

remember all the lessons they

learned last year; not only the

lessons about math and reading,

but lessons that make us better

people. Encouraging your children

and praising them when they

show kindness to others are the

most important parts of

parenthood.

This January, when you are

making New Year’s resolutions,

remember to think about your

children. Encourage good manners

and politeness and show them

gratitude that they might pass on

to others. By action and example,

you will help them grow into

responsible and respectful young

adults.
