Overview
This booklet gives information on employment and training opportunities within our
Local Authority.
Most young people find a job by:
• Talking with careers staff at their school or college
• Working with the Job Centre or employment agencies
• Gaining skills through volunteering or work experience placements
If you have an area of work that you would like to pursue then you could contact a
suitable employer yourself, with support if you need it. The employer may be interested
in setting up a work experience placement for you.
Please go online to get more information about the different services highlighted in this
booklet.
There are certain things that may impact on what is available to you, such as:
• What benefits you’re receiving
• Your diagnosis and what work you would feel comfortable in
• Where you live
• How you travel
• How you make your own decisions
The websites will let you know whether the service you are looking at is the right
service for you.

Every Local Authority must follow the NICE (National institute for Health and
Care Excellence) guidance. Follow this link to see the guidance given for
transitions: https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/qs140
Further guidance can be found here:

Job Centre Plus
2
Most young people will visit the job centre when looking for a job. If your disability or
health condition makes it difficult for you to attend appointments in busy places, then
contact them first to ask what reasonable adjustments they can make.
Our job centres are based at:
• Yate Shopping Centre, 39 South Parade, Yate, Bristol BS37 4BB
• 382-386 Two Mile Hill Rd, Kingswood, Bristol BS15 1BZ
• 1-15 Monk’s Park Avenue, Horfield, Bristol BS7 0UD
If you would like to phone them their number is 0800 169 0190.
You may be able to have access to a Work Coach. This will depend on whether you are
claiming benefits such as Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Universal Credit
(UC) or Employment Support Allowance (ESA). You can find out more about these
benefits by visiting:
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/new-style-employment-and-support-allowance https://www.gov.uk/pip https://www.gov.uk/employment-support-allowance https://www.gov.uk/universal-credit Work Coaches
These are people who can help you to find work or learn new skills. They do this by
helping with:
• Preparing you for working life
• Building your confidence
• Identifying ways for you to learn new skills
• Helping to complete application forms
• Explaining to you what will happen in an interview and what is expected of you
The Work Coach will carry out an employment assessment to find out what kind of work
will suit the individual the best. They may prefer a SKILLS HEALTH CHECK to be
completed first via the NATIONAL CAREERS SERVICE (see Page 4). They look at the
following areas: talent, skills, employment goals and experience. After the assessment
they make an action plan.
When looking for a job, this symbol shows that the job centre has classified this
employer as disability friendly.
For the most up-to-date guidance, please look at www.gov.uk
Access to Work
Access to work is a government scheme to support you within paid employment (you
can’t apply for help if your work is voluntary work).
To apply for this, you must be over 16 and:
• Have a disability or health condition that makes it hard for you to get to and from
work and/or do certain parts of your job.
• Be in or about to start a paid job.
Paid work includes:
• Self-employment
• Apprenticeships
• Internships
• Work trials or work experience
You should talk to your employer about reasonable adjustments before you apply for
Access to Work. They should be able to make changes to ensure that you’re able to do
your job. These could include changing your working hours or providing equipment to
help you do your job.
The scheme can help pay for items or services that you may need, including:
• special equipment or software
• British Sign Language interpreters and video relay service support, lip speakers
or note takers
• adaptations to your car so that you can get to work
• taxi fares to work or a support worker if they can’t use public transport
• a support worker or job coach to help you in the workplace
• a support service (if you have a mental health condition)
• disability awareness training for their colleagues
• the cost of moving equipment if they change location or job
You can read more about Access to Work on the GOV.UK website.

National Careers Service
Careers Advice
The National Careers Service offers careers and skills advice to fit your needs. They
can help you with:
• Finding learning and training
• Developing your CV
• Improving your interview and presentation skills
• Finding out about funding that can support your learning
• Understanding how to progress in your current job
• Improving your reading, writing and maths
Skills Assessment
The Skills Assessment is a set of quizzes and activities that can help you to explore
your skills, interests and what motivates you in life. This can help you to decide what
type of job might be right for you. You may be asked to do this before you meet with
your Work Coach. You can download the report once you've completed at least one
assessment, and take it with you when you meet.
You can have a web-chat with an advisor by following the links on
https://nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk
Tel: 0800 100 900
Schools and Colleges have a statutory duty to provide impartial careers guidance to young people starting in Year 8 up to Year 13. You can ask your school or education placement who is providing this service and how you can access it.

Apprenticeships are an opportunity for you to:
• work alongside experienced staff
• gain job specific skills
• earn a wage
• get time for study related to your role (usually one day a week)
You can look for an apprenticeship on the GOV.UK website: https://www.gov.uk/apply-
apprenticeship and at Amazing Apprenticeships: https://amazingapprenticeships.com
Internships give you the chance to explore different career options, gain experience and
improve your CV. They normally last for a short-fixed period of time and you’re not normally
paid for them. You may get a job at the end of the internship, but it is not guaranteed.
SGS have developed their own programme. Bath and Bristol use Project SEARCH. For more
info, refer to the Education Pathway Booklet and the SEND Local Offer.
