President, South Dakota Nurses Association

ANA has designated 2017 as the “Year of the Healthy Nurse .” Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation Grand Challenge was launched in January 2017 . Every month a new wellness strategy with be emphasized, and will include links to assist nurses to practice the health strategy . Employee health was the focus for January . Each month there will be Webinars related to the wellness focus . Below are listed the topics for each month .

• January: Worksite Wellness and Worker Well-Being• February: Cardiovascular Health• March: Nutrition• April: Combating Stress• May: Women’s Health, National Fitness, and Sports

Month• June: Men’s Health, Cancer Awareness, Skin Health• July: Healthy Sleep• August: Happiness• September: Recovery, Work-Life Balance• October: Infection Control, Immunizations, Moral

Resilience/Moral Distress• November: Mental Health, Wellness• December: Healthy Eating/Healthy Holidays

The US Department of Health and Human Services website also links from the ANA website above to provide additional resources for all to maintain and improve healthy lifestyles . This website link is: https://www .hhs .gov/programs/prevention-and-wellness/index .html I urge

you to utilize this website to assist you with improving your health and assisting others to improve their health over 2017 .

The World Health Organization’s website (http://www .who .int/topics/health_promotion/en/) also includes activities and resources for people of all ages and stages to incorporate into their daily activities . This is another resource we can utilize and provide for our patients to improve their health .

The Healthy People 2020 website (https://www .healthypeople .gov/2020/topics-objectives) provides the list of the objectives with resources to meet the objectives . I believe the twelve topics addressed by ANA’s “Year of the Healthy Nurse” campaign provides strategies for us to meet several of the Healthy People 2020 goal and objectives .

I challenge all nurses in South Dakota to become part of ANA’s Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation Grand Challenge in 2017 . I urge each of you to bookmark the websites, access the information, and implement some of the strategies . Keep a calendar of what strategies you implemented and how these changed your health . Also, note what strategies you provided for patients, families, co-workers, and/or communities and how these improved the health of these populations . At 2017 SDNA Convention (October 1 & 2), we could discuss what strategies we have implemented and plan to implement, and how our health was changed . These could also be topics at our district meetings . I believe that “Healthy Nurses” will improve our nation to become a “Healthy Nation,” thereby reducing health care costs and illness/injury .

When going to school, who doesn’t want money to help pay for expenses related to one’s education? South Dakota Nurses Foundation wants to give you money to help with expenses related to your education . Great match, right? SDNF would like to have more people apply for its scholarships . The scholarships’ criteria are determined by the scholarship donors but can be influenced by feedback from applicants and invested others . However, the application procedure is the responsibility of the SDNF Board of Directors . To that end, we’ve developed a short questionnaire to discover how we can facilitate the SDNF scholarship process . Following are five questions designed to help SDNF streamline and simplify its scholarship applications and the related processes:

1 . What is your current academic status?a . Applying student (bachelor’s degree or master’s

degree or doctoral degree)b . Enrolled student (bachelor’s degree or master’s

degree or doctoral degree)c . Thinking about going back to schoold . Other (please explain)

3 . What incentive is most important to you when deciding whether to apply for a scholarship?a . Dollar amount of scholarshipb . Simplicity of applicationc . Timing of deadlined . Other (please explain)

4 . What are barriers to applying for a SDNF scholarship (pick all that apply)?a . Scholarship criteria don’t apply to meb . Amount of scholarship is not worth my time to

apply forc . Application process is too complicated or takes

too much of my timed . Deadline is not convenient for mee . There isn’t enough time between my finding out

about the scholarship and the application deadlinef . Can receive a specific scholarship only onceg . Other (please explain)

5 . What are your suggestions for improving the SDNF scholarship application process?

The South Dakota Nurses Foundation appreciates your taking the time to contact us regarding your replies to these questions . Using one of these methods, please respond to the above questions by:

1 . E-mailing Carman Timmerman at carmantimmerman@gmail .com .

2 . Calling Carman Timmerman at 605 .391 .4053 .3 . Mailing Carman Timmerman, 12 Saint Charles

St ., Rapid City SD 57701 .

Be assured that we will take your suggestions to heart so that we may improve the SDNF scholarship application process . Thank you for your time and valuable input .

PLEASE NOTE: If you completed this survey at the 2017 Nurses Day at the Legislature February 6-7, you do not need to re-submit the survey .

M. Claire May, South Dakota Nurses Foundation Community Board Member

Established in 1999 by the South Dakota Nurses Association, the charitable South Dakota Nurses Foundation (SDNF) is purposed to support health-related learning . That financial support was initiated with the very first SDNF Scholarship awarded in 2005 to Dr . Christina Plemmons . The story of this first investment in learning needs telling and the narration is a remarkable testament to a purpose driven life .

Dr . Plemmons’ drive to excellence in nursing education began with a BS in Nursing at South Dakota State University (SDSU) in 2002 . This degree was promptly followed by an MS in Nursing, Nurse Educator at SDSU (2008) for which Plemmons utilized the SDNF scholarship . Most recently in 2016, a Ph .D . in Nursing Education was acquired at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas . Now Dr . Plemmons is dedicated to teaching nurses as Assistant Professor, SDSU College of Nursing in Rapid City .

Dr . Plemmons’ single-mindedness in nursing warranted the notice of others . In 2005, she was awarded the SDNA Rookie of the Year Award . She humbly remarked, “I was honored to receive this award the same year I receive the first, ever, SDNF scholarship award .”

District 4 NewsGreetings from District 4,

We had an excellent turn out of nurses for the “Welcome to the Profession” gathering for the SDSU Accelerated Nursing students held on December 8, 2016 at NSU . It was a privilege to view the many posters and discuss the topics each group had chosen for their presentations . Best wishes go out to the graduating students and success in their future endeavors . A “Welcome to the Profession” for Presentation College graduating nursing students will be held on April 27, 2017 .

A Facebook page, SDNA District 4 RN’s, has been made for member and non-member Registered Nurses in the Aberdeen area . The goal is to inform the group of meetings, upcoming events, information from SDNA, ANA and for professional networking . In order to give recognition and support professional achievements on the FB page, nurses are invited to add to the page, items such as recent certifications, attaining an advanced degree, retirement, special employee anniversary, etc .

District 4 encourages all nurses to show their commitment to nursing by including SDNA as one of your “must attend” functions and give voice to decisions that impact our profession and patients . Let’s make it a New Year’s resolution to build up our professional organization and be champions for nursing and those we care for .

GRC Legislative ReportBrittany Novotny, JD, MBA

This article is due mid-January to meet the deadline for the March edition of the SD Nurse, so I’ve kept the content brief and generic .

The Government Relations Committee (GRC) consists of a geographic representation of politically active nurses from across the state . The primary functions of GRC include: studying the need for legislative action; reviewing proposed federal, state and local legislation to determine the impact on nursing and overall health in SD; identifying possible legislative priorities consistent with SDNA’s Legislative Agenda and advising the Board of Directors on legislative matters .

The five basic tenants of the SDNA Legislative Agenda are to support: professional nursing practice, access to quality and affordable health care, public health, occupational and environmental health, and human rights . The full version of the Legislative Agenda can be found on the SDNA website www .sdnurses .org .

Legislative Updates were e-mailed out to membership weekly during the legislative session . We hope you found these updates helpful and informative . Thank you to everybody that responded to our Action Alerts . Legislators appreciate hearing from their constituents and we appreciate you taking the time to represent the nursing profession .

meeting and then participate in a Canvas and Wine experience . I will research the prices and send out a group notice so that I can make reservations . We will decide what our experience for April and May will be at the March meeting . The goal is to have a brief succinct meeting and then have networking, fun and relaxation!

Plans are progressing regarding the Spring Workshop . It will be held at the Orthopedic Institute on the Avera Campus . We do have the general theme: Healthy Nurses, Healthy Populations, and Healthy Work Environments . The plan is to have 5 speakers and CEU’s will be provided . Stay tuned to more information coming soon . Darcy Sherman-Justice and Ardelle Kleinsasser are the co-chairs for this workshop .

Mark your calendars for our convention, “SDNA: The Next 100 Years .” We have been discussing our committees and are so happy for help from Eric Olilla, the SDNA Executive Director . We also commend the Mitchell group for hosting the 2016 convention—you are a “hard act to follow!”

During our December meeting, the USD Student nurses who attended a service learning project in Guatemala as part of their Population Health Course . (See USD Service-Learning Project: “Guatemala Esperanza”) . This wonderful presentation was well received by the SDNA members present, nurse guests and some other student nurses from USD as well as Mt . Marty College . The student nurses went “above and beyond” to take time out of their busy schedule at semester end—just before graduation to inform us of this great experience! Thanks, USD Student nurses!

At this meeting, we also heard that the proceeds from the Pizza Ranch Fundraiser for the Servant Hearts Free Clinic in Yankton was $229 .00 . This money was sent to the clinic as they are solely funded by donations .

South Dakota Nurses Return to the Capitol City

The 42nd Annual Nurses Day at the Legislature (NDL) was held in Pierre February 6-7, 2017 with over 200 nurses and nursing students from across the state in attendance .

The first day of the NDL was held in Ramkota Hotel and Convention Center . The kickoff for the event was a luncheon . South Dakota governor Dennis Daugaard spoke to open the luncheon .

During lunch, Carrie Clausen Hansen, Chair of the Government Relations Committee (GRC), Deb Fischer-Clemens, SDNA N-STAT Coordinator and GRC member, and Brittany Novotny, SDNA Lobbyist, provided an overview of SDNA’s Health Policy Agenda, the legislative priorities for 2017, and Orientation and Advocacy session . The session included information on how a bill becomes a law, testifying before a legislative committee, becoming a politically active nurse and effective lobbying strategies . The SDNA Nurses Strategic Action Team (N-STAT) then provided an update on federal legislation . Deb Fischer-Clemens gave updates .

The lunch concluded with updates from Kim Malsam-Rysdon, Secretary of the Department of Health, and Sarah Aker, Department of Social Services . Following the luncheon, all attendees went to the Capitol building to be recognized by both the Senate and House of Representatives .

Next, all attendees returned to Ramkota hotel for the 2017 Legislative Update . Carrie Clausen Hansen and Brittany Novotny gave updates . The day concluded with a Legislative Chili Social where attendees worked hard to educate legislators on several important issues to nurses in South Dakota . This session was well attended by legislators, nurses and nursing students .

Tuesday morning began bright and early . Attendees were invited to the Capitol at 7:00 a .m . for a continental breakfast with the legislators . Following breakfast, many attended committee hearings throughout the morning . The day concluded with a group picture with Governor Daugaard on the Capitol stairs .

Nurses Day at the Legislature provided attendees with valuable knowledge about the legislative process and SDNA’s 2017 legislative agenda . It also provided nurses and nursing students an opportunity to network with colleagues and friends . Plans are already underway for the 2018 Nurses Day at the Legislature . We hope to see you there!

In 2015 Dr . Plemmons was a recipient of the distinguished SDNA Nurse Educator Award . She simply stated, “I was honored to receive this award .”

Dr . Plemmons’ peers in the College of Nursing and her colleagues in clinical practice had the greatest compliments for her expertise as a clinical teacher . What follows are some of the remarks included during the SDNA Nurse Educator Award ceremony at the Annual Fall Convention in 2015 .

It was acknowledged that she collaborated with Rapid City Regional Hospital in “several creative ways to enhance the learning experience for students while utilizing the expertise of the nursing staff .” In addition, “she led the development of student participation in the Electronic Medical Record implementation at the facility .”

Another meritorious qualifier for the award was Dr . Plemmons’ participation “in the development of a program in which one patient care unit was specifically dedicated as a Nursing Education Unit for clinical experience for the SDSU students on all shifts .”

“Her participation in the College of Nursing’s Quality and Safety Education (QSEN) initiative and Electronic Medical Records (EMR) task force benefitted students while increasing interagency collaboration between the college of nursing and the Regional Health System” were also recognized .

Dr . Plemmons was praised for having provided “continuing education presentations to the SDSU faculty on several topics, including orientation for clinical faculty and the QSEN process, as well as contributing to Rapid City Regional Hospital staff development on topics such as precepting of students .”

Lastly, during the auspicious award ceremony, Dr . Plemmons was lauded as a “model to students and peers and praised for her presentations on scholarly research symposia, including topics such as critical thinking in nursing education .”

Most recently in 2016, Plemmons was again honored at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas as an Outstanding Ph .D . Student .

Dr . Plemmons has always been a student’s advocate . As the first SDNF Scholarship recipient, she takes every opportunity to inform students of the availability and

benefits of the various Scholarships through SDNF . She stated, “[It was] rewarding to receive the funds as they helped with the financial burden of a Masters degree .” Dr . Plemmons has remained staunchly committed to SDNF . “I was motivated to contribute to SDNF with time and money to support future students,” she said .

The passion Dr . Plemmons has for students’ success is similar to the fervor she holds for teaching students in the best pedagogical practices . “The research on how adults learn and the many ways we can apply this research to how we teach nursing students, and patients, and families” are vital to Dr . Plemmons classroom successes . “My dissertation research explored the relationship between three clinical teaching models (dedicated education units, traditional, blended) and perceived clinical self-efficacy and attitude toward team process,” she remarked .

She is an active member of SDNA and has served as State Treasurer, District Vice-President, District President, and Vendor Committee Chairperson for state conventions, among other areas of service within the organization . She has also served on the South Dakota Nurses Foundation Board and on hospital and community boards and committees . Dr . Plemmons consistently demonstrates professionalism in all her activities .

Dr . Plemmons summed up her fascination with nursing . “The opportunities for autonomous practice continue to expand and nurses always have, and continue to place the patient at the center of care,” she recapped . Her philosophy of life is tri-fold: “Change is constant; sometimes it’s worth the wait for the first car on the roller coaster; and, don’t waste time complaining about reality .” Her family believes she epitomizes “the most patient person in the world” – the one who does wait for that first roller coaster car!

When not involved with research and teaching, Dr . Plemmons stays connected to the community by knitting winter hats, scarves, and mittens for the homeless community in Rapid City . An avid hiker, Dr . Plemmons with her dog, Banu, will take off for a day on the Black Hills trails . A travel enthusiast and Harry Potter fan, a recent trip culminated in a visit to Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley at Universal Orlando, in addition to basking in the Florida sunshine at the Cocoa and Clearwater Beaches .

South Dakota Nurses Foundation Board salutes the first ever SDNF Scholarship recipient! Congratulations Dr . Plemmons on your illustrious successes!

In October of 2016, nine student nurses, two faculty members and Dr . Kathy Magorian, the Site Director for the USD Vermillion campus, participated in a service learning project in Guatemala as the clinical component for their Population Health Nursing course . The project was sponsored by the Nursing Heart Inc . organization . Nursing Heart, Inc . through its initiative, Guatemala Esperanza, is committed to continue sustainable health care partnerships in the rural indigenous communities of Guatemala .

The coordinator for the Guatemalan project is Ron Noecker, a high school classmate of Kathy Magorian’s . Ron is the Executive Director at Guatemala Esperanza and his help in activity coordination was greatly appreciated by the USD group .

There are 15 .2 million people in Guatemala . Geographically, the area of Guatemala compares to the size of Tennessee . Many of the citizens live in

mountainous areas and 75% live below the poverty level . The country is warm and humid with active and inactive volcanoes which provide beautiful scenery .

The group participated in three different projects: school screenings, a foot care clinic, and installing Chapina® Stoves . The students related that Guatemalans have a high incidence of diabetes, and walk barefoot around the countryside enhancing the need for foot care . The homes in Guatemala have moist, dirt floors, which increases the exposure to fungi .

Language barriers were a challenge for the group, however interpreters were available . All participants indicated this was an excellent experience and the people they served offered positive feedback regarding the care provided .

Five student nurses from Vermillion who participated in this service project presented their

experiences to the SDNA District 11 members at the December 1, 2016 local meeting . The District 11 members were very grateful for sharing their time and talent, as this presentation was held at the end of their busy last semester of nursing education .

Greetings to South Dakota Nurses!

SDNA MissionThe South Dakota Nurses Association speaks with

a unified voice to support professional nursing through advocacy, communication, networking and collaboration across nursing specialties . The Registered Nurse is an advocate of access to quality, cost effective care while upholding standards of excellence for the profession .

Above is the mission for nurses in South Dakota . It does not mention Republican or Democrat or Independent, just nurses unified . This does not mean that we all think alike or have the same wants and desires but we are all working toward being the best nurse for our patients and the state of South Dakota .

There are several issues that affect nursing in this legislative session . You all have been generous with donations that make our voice stronger . Be alert to your email and utilize the talking points to give you an understanding of the issues and how to talk to a legislator, should the opportunity present . It is important that the legislators hear one voice .

So as I have said before, “Let them hear us roar!”

Respectfully submitted,Julie Dangel MSN, RN PAC Chair

2017: YEAR OF THE HEALTHY NURSEBalance your life for a healthier you.

American Nurses Association

In recognition of the impact that increased nurse health, safety, and wellness has on patient outcomes, quality of care, and overall nurse satisfaction and quality of life, American Nurses Association (ANA) has designated 2017 as the “Year of the Healthy Nurse” with the tagline of “Balance your life for a healthier you .” Each month will highlight various health, safety, and wellness topics important not only to nurses, but to their co-workers, families, patients, and the communities in which they live, work, and play . Nurses struggle with multiple health, safety, and wellness challenges . ANA’s 2016 Health Risk Appraisal shows alarming trends for registered nurses (RNs) and nursing students:

• AnaverageBMIof27.6(overweight)• 12%havenoddedoffwhiledrivinginthepastmonth• Only 16% eat the recommended daily amount of

fruits and vegetables• Less than half perform the recommended quantity

and time of muscle-strengthening exercises (ICG & ANA, 2016)

RNs continue to rate workplace stress as a hazardous occupational risk well above the national average (ICG &

ANA President Responds to

Executive Order on Immigration

SILVER SPRING, MD – On January 27, President Trump announced Executive Order 13769, “Protecting the Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into the United States .” The following statement is attributable to American Nurses Association (ANA) President Pamela F . Cipriano, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, in response to last week’s announcement:

“Nursing is committed to both the welfare of the sick, injured, and vulnerable in society and to social justice . The ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements establishes the ethical standard for the profession in its fervent call for all nurses and nursing organizations to advocate for the protection of human rights and social justice .

Therefore, ANA opposes any action that erodes the human rights of people, and strives to protect and preserve the rights of vulnerable groups such as the poor, homeless, elderly, mentally ill, prisoners, refugees, women, children, and socially stigmatized groups .

This underlying principle must be considered in light of the current Administration’s efforts to halt refugee admissions for 120 days and block citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States for 90 days .

Any actions taken that are intended to increase the safety of our country must be clearly defined and not jeopardize human rights nor unfairly target religious groups .”

###

The American Nurses Association (ANA) is the premier organization representing the interests of the nation’s 3.6 million registered nurses. ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting a safe and ethical work environment, bolstering health and wellness of nurses, and advocating on health care issues that affect nurses and the public. ANA is at the forefront of improving the quality of healthcare for all.

ANA, 2016) . Yet nurses’ very calling, professionalism, and strong sense of ethics demand that they become better role models, advocates, and educators .

2017 brings a focus on the Year of the Healthy Nurse, and will include the launch of the Healthy Nurse, Healthy NationTM Grand Challenge (HNHN GC) and the continuation of #FitNurseFriday . ANA’s HNHN GC is a sweeping social movement to increase the health of the United States’ 3 .6 million RNs, thereby impacting and improving the health of the nation . HNHN GC focuses on five fundamental indicators of wellness: rest, nutrition, activity, quality of life, and safety . These five wellness indicators are incorporated into ANA’s Year of the Healthy Nurse topics to ensure RNs receive cohesive

messaging and assistance on their journey toward their best health ever!
