SOUTH CHARLOTTE MIDDLE SCHOOL APRIL 19, 2013 Dear Parents: The final quarter of the school year is exciting but also filled with a lot of pressure for everyone. Pressure on the teacher to insure students have all the knowledge to be successful on EOGs, pressure on the students to perform well on the EOGs and pressure on the parents as well, wanting your child to do well while not becoming too anxious. As we continue this quarter, it is my hope that students will get a lot of rest, eat right and focus on their academics. Spring sports, the musical, and so many more activities are in full swing and it is fun to enjoy all of these; however, academics are the most important. Speaking of the musical, I enjoyed it so very much last evening. The drama, dance, and music departments did a great job preparing our students for success. I was amazed how much talent our students have. I am sure I need to ask them for their autographs because I know they will be valuable one day. I could not be more proud of them. A special thank you goes out to Hermes Goudes and his family along with Mr. Carswell. The beautification project last weekend made my week. The flowers, pine straw, weeding, etc. looks incredible. I appreciate so much you making our school look so very good. When anyone turns in to our school, the outside appearance is the first impression. Currently (once CMS mows our grass) the presentation is so nice. Thank you again! With spring arriving, everyone is shopping for spring clothes that are fashionable and fun to wear. I encourage you to look at your children each morning and ensure they are abiding by the dress code. Let me clarify the shorts policy as this is not clear in the student handbook. Shorts act just as skirts. The shorts do not need to exceed 6 inches above the TOP of the knee. Regarding flip flops, the only flip flops not allowed are the flimsy type that could possible break easily if someone stepped on the back of them or otherwise. Rainbow and Reef type flip flops as well as Soccer/ Athletic type flip flops are examples of what are fine to wear. Thank you for your assistance with this. Thank you for allowing us to serve your children each day. Lisa Bailes, Principal

SOUTH CHARLOTTE MIDDLE SCHOOL

APRIL 19, 2013

Dear Parents:

The final quarter of the school year is exciting but also filled with a lot of pressure for everyone.

Pressure on the teacher to insure students have all the knowledge to be successful on EOGs,

pressure on the students to perform well on the EOGs and pressure on the parents as well, wanting

your child to do well while not becoming too anxious. As we continue this quarter, it is my hope that

students will get a lot of rest, eat right and focus on their academics. Spring sports, the musical, and

so many more activities are in full swing and it is fun to enjoy all of these; however, academics are

the most important.

Speaking of the musical, I enjoyed it so very much last evening. The drama, dance, and music

departments did a great job preparing our students for success. I was amazed how much talent our

students have. I am sure I need to ask them for their autographs because I know they will be

valuable one day. I could not be more proud of them.

A special thank you goes out to Hermes Goudes and his family along with Mr. Carswell. The

beautification project last weekend made my week. The flowers, pine straw, weeding, etc. looks

incredible. I appreciate so much you making our school look so very good. When anyone turns in to

our school, the outside appearance is the first impression. Currently (once CMS mows our grass) the

presentation is so nice. Thank you again!

With spring arriving, everyone is shopping for spring clothes that are fashionable and fun to wear. I

encourage you to look at your children each morning and ensure they are abiding by the dress code.

Let me clarify the shorts policy as this is not clear in the student handbook. Shorts act just as

skirts. The shorts do not need to exceed 6 inches above the TOP of the knee. Regarding flip flops,

the only flip flops not allowed are the flimsy type that could possible break easily if someone

stepped on the back of them or otherwise. Rainbow and Reef type flip flops as well as Soccer/

Athletic type flip flops are examples of what are fine to wear.

Thank you for your assistance with this.

Thank you for allowing us to serve your children each day.

MS. RAFFENSPERGER

This is my third year at South Charlotte.

I am originally from a small town in South-Central Pennsylvania named

Biglerville. As most people have never heard of my small town and need a

reference, I tell them that Biglerville is approximately 10 miles north of historic

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. I attended and graduated from Shippensburg

University with a Bachelors degree in Mathematics and a certification in

teaching. Utilizing my education I’ve taught 7th Grade Math for two-and-a-half

years in Gettysburg, PA and an additional two-and-a-half years in Raleigh, NC

(Wake County) before moving to Charlotte.

Outside of teaching, I enjoy the company of my friends at social events and

attending plays, movies, and dining. I love sports and attending sporting events,

so let me know when your games are and I will try to be there. I myself played

field hockey and softball when I was in high school. I also played ultimate Frisbee,

kickball, dodge ball, and floor hockey through an intramural league. My NFL team

favorite hails from Pittsburgh – Go STEELERS! I love the outdoors - camping,

hiking, fishing, boating, skiing, sledding, and riding four wheelers/snowmobiles.

SCMS classes this week….so great, they are SHOCKING!

Ms. Matusiak used math manipulatives to model area and perimeter floor plans. We used

experimentation with the manipulatives to change the floor plan shape but keep the area

and perimeter the same.

Mr. Tubb had a guest speaker who used to work for NASA. He discussed his part in sending

Magellan to Venus in 1984. Pictures were shared with students. The students were

captivated by his presentation and asked a great deal of questions afterward

Mr. Chevy got to share one of my very personal experiences with polio, since we are learning

about FDR and his battle with this disease. It is a pretty amazing story

Ms. Susen has been using some of the strategies in Kelley Gallagher’s book, “Deeper

Reading,” such as reflective responses after the students have read a piece of text. For

example: this week we discussed the conspiracy with Lance Armstrong after we read "It's

Not about the Bike" by Armstrong himself.

Mr. Brown’s classes participated in a competition between groups answering pot luck

questions from a hat concerning solving equations and inequalities. Questions ranged from

level 2 (relatively simple) to level 5 (difficult word problems). There were four members per

team. Each team had one elected captain. Team members could collaborate, but all

members of the team had to complete their own answer sheet. The captain of each team

could not come up to the front of the room to get the next question until all members of the

group were able to solve the problem properly. This was a race to get the problems done

first, but the most correct answers won the prize. (Blow

Pop) The race part was to determine a tie breaker in

the event that teams tied in number of answers

correct.

Mr. Whitney gave students skits to mime about

decolonization. They enjoyed acting without talking

while the rest of the class put the information in their

notebooks.

Great job, teachers and students!

New Books arrive in Library!

Students, teachers, and especially Mrs. Smith are very excited because the library

has received an order of new library books. Thanks so much to the PTO for

providing $10,000.00 to update the collection. In this photo you can see the

print books we received, which cost about $8,000.00, with the remainder of the

money being spent on eBooks. The middle cart holds nonfiction books which

support Common Core objectives. Yes, we still use books, even with the Internet.

But we also received many books just for fun including books about sports

teams, new graphic novels, and current young adult fiction. Check out our eBook

collection by downloading the FollettShelf App and visiting Mrs. Smith's wiki

page
