Women &

Leadership

Edition!

[2]

Dear MBS students,

I hope that you are enjoying the mild winter thus far and that your Term 2 studies are tracking well.

We are excited to bring you this edition of The SouRCe! Inspired by Australia’s historic achievement of its first female Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, our feature article is on Women in Leadership. Many thanks to Frances Pratt, Libby

Akhounov and Rohan Smith for contributing to this feature.

In response to the insights gained from last term’s Student Survey, the SRC has been beavering

away to redefine our purpose and vision and to achieve the best possible outcomes for the student community. We have defined three key areas for improvement: Visibility, Engagement and Action.

Visibility

o Increase communication channels including Facebook, MBS Direct, Email, Student News, Class visits and cafeteria plasma screen

Engagement

o More events for all students e.g. Welcome Back BBQ, Pizza Forum, Club events, Mid-term drinks and End of term drinks

o More input from students via Class Representatives, Pizza Forum and the

expanded Clubs, Alumni, SRC, Careers (CASC) meeting (now including Class Representatives, IT, Marketing and Student Services).

o Increased access to school leadership e.g. Town hall meeting and Chat with the Dean

Action

o Listen to student concerns

o Act on student concerns through relevant channels

o Give timely feedback

Please feel free to have a chat with the SRC team around the school or to email us at [email protected]. We would like to hear your feedback. We hope that the actions of the SRC in pursuit of our student

focused vision will lead to a better MBS experience for all, this term and beyond.

Warm regards,James

SANDWICH ETIQUETTEIt’s been a long day. A tough class. You’re hungry. You walk out only to find that there are not enough sandwiches to go around. It has happened to most of us at some point, and it isn’t a pleasant experience.

SO TO REITERATE THE THREE RULES OF MBS MEAL ETIQUETTE:

RULE #1 - SANDWICHES ARE FOR STUDENTS IN CLASSES ONLY. This also applies to ANY food left for students in classes or meetings or seminars. If you aren’t in a class/event, you don’t get a sandwich. I do realize that they are practically irresistible (I’ve seen people come to fists over the last spicy lamb wrap) but they are catered exactly for the number of students enrolled in classes for that session. So if you take a sandwich, there is a good chance a student will miss out on eating. So restrain yourself and don’t take that sandwich!

RULE #2 – ONLY TAKE ONE SANDWICH. Again, I know its hard to hold yourself back. They really are quite wonderful, a true taste and flavour experience. IF EVERYONE has gone back into class and there are a couple of stray sandwiches left over, by all means help yourself (they are bound for the bin anyway, but that’s a separate issue). But while there are students waiting for food, the limit is one. O-N-E.

RULE #3 - IF YOU SEE SOMEONE TAKING A SANDWICH AND THEY AREN’T IN A CLASS OR THEY TAKE MORE THAN ONE, REFER THEM TO RULES #1 AND #2.

Simple. Happy dining!

SYNDICATE ROOMS: NOT FOR

SLEEPING!It’s a busy time - mid-term exams driving you mad, syndicate assignments knocking on your door, and those marathon weekend syndicate meetings. Unfortunately - there are only a set number of syndicate rooms, so we need to share (sharing is caring!).

GROUPS HAVE PRIORITY OVER SINGLE USERS!!!

If you are taking up a room on your own, and there is a group looking for a room - please give up the room and find a place in the library (remember the basement if required!) or the cafe after 3pm. If all Mill syndicate rooms are occupied, you may use the Conference centre syndicates (168 Leicester St), Monday to Friday only (9am-5pm, no weekends, no

AV equipment, subject to availability). Enquire at reception. If there is no room in Mill theaters, the library, the cafe or the conference centre, then you may try the Melbourne University main campus library. Please let us know if this is a problem.

Please keep room use limited to 3 HOURS PER ROOM unless you have a previous booking. Monday to

Friday is on a “first come, first served” basis. On Saturdays and Sundays six Mill syndicate rooms will be available for booking for a maximum of 3 hours per syndicate group. Bookings are to be made via [email protected] only.

ANYONE CAUGHT SLEEPING IN A SYNDICATE ROOM LOSES THAT ROOM.

NO EXCEPTIONS.

HOUSEKEEPING (YES, WE’RE LOOKING AT YOU!)

INTERVIEW WITH FRANCES PRATT(MBS MBA 2009, MEMBER ALUMNI COUNCIL)

How do you define leadership? “Leadership is very difficult to define because it is contextual and personal. It is about people and situations... not about popularity, but about making what you believe to be the right decision with the information that you have at that time.”

Who are the leaders you admire? “I am drawn to leaders who stand up for what they believe. An example is Catherine Walter (also an alum of Melbourne Business School and on the board). In her time on the NAB board, even under immense pressure internally and externally, she stuck to what she believed to be right and stood her ground. I think that this showed great guts and grace.”

\What challenges do you believe aspiring female leaders face in today’s world? “Women have a lot of opportunity to lead in today’s world... I think that the main challenge is to decide if it is something that they want to do, and in what areas they want to apply their leadership.”

How can women in leadership roles serve as role models to

other women? “I think that women

should share their thoughts and ideas on what it is to be a leader, both the positives a n d t h e hardships.”

What role do you think men

c a n p l a y i n developing and

a d v o c a t i n g f o r women in leadership

roles? “Men can help by allowing women to grow their own style of leadership and making space available for women to grow and learn. I have also found men to be some of my best advocates and mentors. They help me to see things from a different perspective.”

Do you think we need legislation to mandate for more women in the corporate boardroom? “Yes, I think that we do... Whilst I have some issues with a quota system, it is clear that without some government or business mandate, we will not make headway on this issue. To say that this alone will fix the problem is also simplistic. We need to explore why women are not getting onto boards and what can be done from a systemic perspective... It is proven that companies that can allow and manage greater diversity outperform those without. Gender is only one of the aspects of this - we also need diversification in thinking, career backgrounds, socio-economic backgrounds and experiences.”

Three pieces of advice to women aspiring to take greater leadership roles?

“Be yourself: Know yourself and be conscious of the effect that you have on others.

Be open to opportunity: Be on the look out for how you can help others in your community and in business. Giving to others helps you to grow and learn about yourself.

Be honest and open about your learning and yourself: Talk to people about what you see and what you are learning. Sometimes this means being honest about your doubts and concerns. I know for me – the biggest improvements are made from the hardest experiences.”

INTERVIEW WITH LIBBY AKHOUNOV(LAWYER AND CURRENT PART-TIME MBA STUDENT)

How do you define leadership?

“Leadership is about vision for change, conveying that vision and creating a way for people to make something happen.”

Who are the leaders you admire?

“Joan Rosanove QC, Victoria’s first female barrister for her courage, strength and ability to lead the way to change the status quo. Her determination had far reaching implications for women entering the profession.”

What aspects of a woman’s life do you feel develop her leadership potential?

“Women can be better multi taskers, have strong organisational skills and are naturally sensitive to the needs of others. Women are also natural peace makers. I think these qualities are developed t h r o u g h g e n e r a l l i f e

experience.”

What challenges do you believe aspiring female leaders face in today’s world?

“I believe the potential to be a leader is developed in oneself and that is the greatest challenge.”

How can women in leadership roles serve as role models to other women, and what role can men play in developing and advocating for women in leadership roles?

“Through mentoring and sharing their knowledge.”

Do you think we need legislation to mandate for more women in the corporate boardroom?

“Yes. Research shows that boards that are more representative, particularly of women, are more successful.”

Three pieces of advice to women aspiring to take greater leadership roles?

“Work hard, believe in yourself and never take no for an answer.”

“Research shows

that boards that are

more representative,

particularly of women,

are more successful.”

Case Interview Practice:

EVERY SATURDAY 11 AM, LIBRARY BASEMENT

With the beginning of Term 2, it was a time to get the reflection of the last year and see what we achieved and how to go forward. We achieved significant consulting recruitment turnaround from 5 in 2009 to 37 in 2010 (close to 800% increase 'cheers'). This has been partly due to better economic conditions, however better student preparation was also a key factor. In order to further assist students to meet the industry expectations, we are collecting feedback from the firms and will further devise our strategy around the feedback.

So what is happening this term? With less focus on recruitment, Term 2 provides excellent time to develop skills and build networks. Hence we are focusing on Case Interview Practice this term. Case interviews are the unique interview process in the management consulting industry, requiring early preparation and practice from students. We are holding Case practices every Saturday @ 11 am in the Library basement and have plans for case workshop from industry consultants.

“DISRUPTING COMMON THOUGHT”Early in the semester, the association, in collaboration with Alumni Relations, hosted Andrew Scott, Managing Director of digital agency Whybin\TBWA\Tequila. Mr Scott’s presentation, entitled ‘Disrupting Common Thought’, was about the disruption methodology that is currently being used by the agency to great effect. His presentation educated the audience, comprising of around 60 students and alumnus, on the concept of ‘Disruption’, which in a

nutshell, is about recreating the market place in your favour. Mr. Scott used live case study examples, specifically the ‘Pedigree’ account, to further elaborate the concept and to show how it is being used effectively. For more information:http://www.wtbwa.com.au/; http://

LECTURE

SERIESThe MBS Marketing Association’s Lecturer Speaker Series is a way to bring the faculty and the student body closer together through sharing of research. The aim of the series is to provide a window for students to gain insight on the cutting edge research being done by the marketing faculty. This series also provides a platform for the faculty to share their latest ideas and research with the student body. This term, the association, along with Professor Les Johnson, hosted the second installment of the series. Professor Johnson shared his research on the impact of low price brands on the order-of-entry advantage. This research paper was presented earlier this year at the Thought Leaders in Brand Management Conference in Lugano, Switzerland. The research revolved around whether companies, specifically pharmaceutical firms, could gain any advantage by introducing low price products into the marketplace. The presentation touched on both the technical methodology as well as the practical findings behind the research.!

NEW NAME, NEW LOGO, NEW

ADMINISTRATION! The MBS Investment Management Association (MIMA) has now a new name; from now on, the investment club will be referred to as the MBS Finance Club. The Club will widen MIMA’s traditional role of

exposing students to investment management roles and hence, provide a broader coverage of the financial services industry. MIMA’s legacy of stock picking competition will continue and this year, the competition will

begin in Term 3. Everyone is encouraged to

participate. Last year’s competition was intense, but rewarding. Cameron Bradley

and James Harrington brought home the gold with their recommendation of a Sell for JB Hi-Fi. First year students: Adam Walkom (recommended Buy for Bradken), and John Wu and Ivy Saludes (recommended Buy for Biota) also participated in last year’s final rounds. Some photos from last year’s competition:Since the start of Term 2 2010, Rajeev Batra, Vinod Bhat, and Ivy Saludes assume leadership roles for the Club. You can read about the Club’s new mission statement and description of activities via MBS Direct. To become a member of the Club and receive future announcements, please send an email to [email protected] OR via Facebook (MBS Finance Club).

mentoring & women in

business

MONDAY 19 JULY 2010 (6 PM), MBSThis event has been organised by the Women and Management Club to highlight the benefits of mentorship for women in business. Although women comprise a significant proportion of the business population, under-representation of women in senior management, executive and board positions remains a problem. Engaging a mentor who can provide advice, guidance and advocacy may offer a means of promoting career advancement and breaking through these barriers.

The roundtable discussion will kick off with successful women leaders sharing their insights and experiences in this topic. A discussion will then follow and the goal is to provide informal and personal accounts of mentorship and advice on choosing and approaching a mentor, and framing realistic expectations from both parties.

BRAND NEW CLUB!!!!

Public speaking is like a beast for some and a beauty for others. For some it comes naturally and for some it is just nightmare. Thankfully it is not rocket science and everyone can learn to become a good public speaker. That is right, EVERYONE. There is an old saying “Practice makes perfect” and that is all there is to it. We want to collaborate with Toastmaster International, non profit organization that focuses on improving public speaking skills, to ensure that we have mentors that can help us to become better public speakers. Our first meeting will be in mid July, so stay tuned for more news. If you are keen to join this club, please send your email to [email protected] or [email protected] . This club is open to all MBS family (FT/PT students, staff, alumni).
