Summer 2018 - Program PoliciesREGISTRATION POLICY

• To register online for Summer Adventure Day Camp, Trips and Club Adventure Workshops go to www.sace.soudertonsd.org. For mail in registration complete the registration forms found on pages 7-10. ALL CAMPERS AND WORKSHOP ATTENDEES MUST ALSO COMPLETE THE INSURANCE FORM FOUND ON PAGE 8. SACE reserves the right to return incomplete forms which may delay registration. A separate registration form and insurance form is required for each child being registered.

• Registration and payment for these SACE programs may be made online at sace.soudertonsd.org or over the phone: Aquatics, Driver Education, Volleyball League.

• To register and pay for SATV Television Production Camp, go to satv.soudertonsd.org or contact [email protected].

• All payments are due prior to the start of camp on June 18, 2018. Online registration will close one week prior to start of camp or workshop, or when activities fill. All registration is on a first come basis. Contact SACE office for payment plan, if necessary.

• Tax Receipts will be mailed upon request.

Souderton Area Community Education

REFUND POLICY• A REFUND is when you ask for your money back after payment has

been made.• A $25 non-refundable Registration Fee is included for each camp,

trip, workshop and SACE summer class.• A refund will be granted (less the $25 Registration Fee per activity)

with written notice received in the SACE office two weeks prior to the scheduled camp/day trip/workshop/class. A 30-day notice is required for Trip Week refunds due to the high demand and limited seating.

CHANGE POLICY• A CHANGE is when one day or activity is switched or substituted

for another with no money refunded.• If you require your child’s participation for a day or activity to be

exchanged for another, you must call the SACE office with your request 48 hours in advance to allow time to process your request.

• Changes will be granted only when availability exists. There will be no refund of payments for changes that cannot be made.

• Two changes may be made on a child’s registration with no charge. There is a surcharge of $25 for every change after the first two.

DAY CAMP, PROGRAMS, AND WORKSHOPS WILL NOT BE PRO-RATED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE.

Parents will receive an Information Packet prior to the start of the summer program. This packet will contain all

pertinent information about summer programs.

Our Club Adventure workshop program offers enrichment opportunities for children who don’t need a full day of camp, but would like to use their summer to explore different areas of interest. We schedule a variety of age appropriate workshops through the summer open to students who have completed kindergarten through 7th grade (check workshop listings for age ranges).

Whether kids want to spend a week testing their culinary skills, creating arts or crafts, expanding their science and technology expertise, or exploring their dramatic talents, parents can create a summer of activities specific to their child’s interests and schedule.

NOW AVAILABLE: Lunch/Swim option to allow students to stay at the high school for a full day of activities. Mail in registration for this option on page 10. Workshop registration form on Page 9. Online registration at sace.soudertonsd.org

Summer Adventure DAY CAMP— Pages 4-8Summer Adventure is our day camp program and a place where children laugh, learn and love to come every day. We welcome children who have completed kindergarten through 6th grade. Each summer our campers explore a different adventure theme through games, songs, crafts, stories, outdoor activities, food, trips and their imagination. We offer children a structured day of fun activities while keeping in mind what kids need most in the summer—time to be a kid.

Our flexible schedule makes us a favorite among parents. We offer FREE extended hours and as always, lunch and snacks are included! Additional options include weekly field trips and swimming opportunities twice a week.

Summer Community ProgramSOur summer programs offer opportunities for community members of all ages. From driver education and swimming lessons to pool rentals, grass volleyball league and SATV production classes, Souderton Area Community Education has something for everyone. See page 16 for more.

Club Adventure WORKSHOPS— Pages 9, 11-15

For all those nature loving campers we are offering three weeks of Nature Camp at the SAVE Nature Center located on the West Broad Street Elementary School campus. The full-day camp will provide a variety of topics for students to choose from with daily outdoor activities, crafts and natural adventures. A day of creative natural projects, games and exploration includes lunch and recess time.

Adventure Aquarium, Camden, NJMonday, August 13 Adventure Aquarium on the Camden Waterfront features

one-of-a-kind exhibits with more than 8,500 aquatic species throughout two million gallons of water. The Aquarium is home to the largest collection of sharks on the East Coast, including the only great hammerhead shark on exhibit in the U.S., the only aquarium in the world to exhibit hippos, one of only six facilities in the U.S. to have Little Blue penguins and exhibits the longest Shark Bridge in the world.

Camelbeach Water Park, Tannersville, PATuesday, August 14

Splashes and fun for all ages at Pennsylvania’s largest outdoor water park. With 37 rides, slides and kid-friendly attractions, getting wet has never been more exciting. Age appropriate activities include Pharaoh’s Phortress and Camel Cove for younger guests with tube rides and slides for older campers.

Diggerland, West Berlin, NJWednesday, August 15

Diggerland is an outdoor theme park focused on providing hands on opportunities for children to drive and control real construction equipment. Campers will have fun digging, scooping, demolishing in the dirt! New activities and rides open for 2018.

Campers will have many exciting adventures as they travel near and far during Trip Week. Each day, all campers will visit a different location to close out their summer camp experience. Cost of these trips is included in the Week 9 camp fee. Transportation, attraction admission, lunch, snacks and a camp shirt are all included!

Cherry Crest Farms, Ronks, PAThursday, August 16

A camp favorite where campers find their way through the giant corn maze and participate in more than 50 fun farm activities. Cherry Crest gives guests an opportunities to laugh and learn while engaging in wholesome activities on a working farm.

Lenape Park, Sellersville Theater and Koolicks Water Ice, Sellersville, PAFriday, August 17

Our campers will participate in cool activities and games as teams compete in fun challenges. Campers may even get wet! Following a picnic lunch at Lenape Park campers will head to the historic Sellersville Theater for a movie and camp slide show. Koolicks Water Ice will cool everyone off back at Franconia Elementary for our final Summer Adventure afternoon!

Open Swim Opportunities

Souderton Area School District Community Education

Summer Adventure Open Swim will take place 14 times throughout the summer on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Campers will spend the morning at the Souderton High School Pool and return to camp in time for lunch. Children signed up for swimming must be comfortable in the water. This is NOT a lesson—open swim only. Additional cost for the Open Swim is $20 per week.

Lifeguards will be on duty at all times and counselors from each camp site will travel with campers to and from the pool. Please send your child dressed in their bathing suit and with a towel and change of dry clothes on Swim days.

The number of campers on each swimming trip will be limited so register early to avoid disappointment. Be sure to register for your choice of swim dates online or on the registration form found on page 7.

Lunch and Daily Snacks are Included in Camp Cost!Campers will be provided with a snack and beverage each morning and afternoon. For those campers staying later, a second afternoon snack will also be available. Lunch will include: entrée, vegetable and/or fruit, milk or cold beverage, dessert. A la carte items will also be available to purchase at extra cost. A complete menu will be available online prior to the start of camp.

Summer Adventure Day Trips are an option for any campers registered for the day of the trip. Week 2 - Wednesday, June 27 Bring along old sneakers or water shoes and a change of clothing to go exploring along the East Branch of the

Perkiomen Creek. Observe water creatures, plants and wildlife that make the stream their home. Learn how we can help protect them and conserve our local watershed. Lunch will be served picnic style along the creek.Depart: Approx. 11:00 AM / Return: Approx. 3:30 PM

Week 3 - Friday, July 6Campers will spend the day exploring nature, geocaching, taking samples, navigating trails and learning about ways they can be environmentally friendly at our very own Souderton S.A.V.E. Nature Center.

Week 4 - Wednesday, July 11Campers will have an adventure at one of Pennsylvania’s premiere state parks, taking hikes and playing on natural

playgrounds. A picnic lunch and swimming at the park pool will be followed by an afternoon treat at OwowCow Ice Cream Parlor in Ottsville- ice cream included. Campers should wear bathing suits and bring towels and dry clothes.Depart: Approx. 9:00 AM / Return: Approx. 4:00 PM

Week 5 - Friday, July 20 Campers will enjoy the fruits of summer with a trip to Solebury Orchards in New Hope. This farm experience includes a

wagon ride to the blueberry patch where children will learn how to pick their own blueberries to bring home and share. A picnic lunch under the orchard’s fruit trees with frosty cider will be included.Depart: Approx. 9:00 AM / Return: Approx. 3:00 PM

Week 6 - Wednesday, July 25 One-Two-Three strikes you’re out if you don’t sign up for this exciting trip. Campers will visit Coca-Cola Park to see the

Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs baseball team in a steamy afternoon game. An old-fashioned ballpark lunch will be provided during the game.Depart: Approx. 8:30 AM / Return: Approx. 4:00 PM

WEEK 1 June 18-22 ANIMALS IN NATURE $185

This week is filled with outdoor exploration designed for campers to learn more about the animals and species that surround them in the forests, streams and fields of Pennsylvania. Campers will participate in activities that educate them about forest, water and soil science while participating in games and creative crafts that will stretch their learning about animals in the wild.

WEEK 2 June 25-29 PLANT WEEK $185

Campers will have fun in the SAVE Center and forest while learning about plant parts and processes. They will participate in interactive projects, engage in activities both inside and outside as they learn about all kinds of plants ranging from trees to bushes to flowers. Campers will become plant detectives as they search for clues about things that grow.

WEEK 4 July 9-13 WATER WEEK $185

Lots of fun opportunities for campers to get outside, get wet and learn about environmental issues. They will explore the creek bed and pond areas to observe water life and identify samples. They will learn how to conserve water and use it wisely. Each day will consist of different, fun activities that will let them express their creativity and bring back some great ideas to try at home.

Club adventure WorkshopsClub Adventure Workshops provide challenging, creative learning opportunities for elementary and early middle school students. Whether it’s music, art, cooking, sewing, technology, science, languages, drama or more, there’s a fun workshop for all. Check ages for each session. Student must have completed the grade listed.

Be sure to check out several new Middle School options.

The new Lunch/Swim option will allow participants to spend the day at the high school with a morning workshop, lunch and swim time plus an afternoon workshop. Be sure to register for the lunch/swim option if participating.

Summer Band & StringsA great way to keep music skills fresh! Children will have the opportunity to practice, perform and play their instruments each day with instruction from our workshop teachers. Workshop features small group instruction as well as full band and orchestral rehearsal, where students practice fun songs and learn rehearsal techniques they can use at home. The week concludes with a concert for parents, family and friends on Friday. For students who have had one or two years of lessons on these instruments: Violin, Viola, Cello, String Bass, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba and Concert Snare Drum. Students must bring their own instrument. Secret Agent Lab: Forensics CampCampers focus on the science of forensics in this hands-on look at crime scenes. Identify and collect evidence from fingerprints to tracks to trash! Participants will play games, put on plays and produce a final production to perform for parents at the end of the week. curiosity by teaching engineer concepts through hands-on learning. Beta MastersImagine a small indie game studio that has five days to pitch, design and build a new video game. A celebration of creative problem-solving and empowerment, Team Elektra all-girls program explores how the combination of computer science and digital expression can make a difference in the local and global community. As a grassroots organization, Team Elektra members develop interactive stories using Scratch, and collaborate on inspirational videos and websites about meaningful issues. They learn how to use code to create a powerful message that communicates to the world who we are and the positive change that we seek. Following the lead of successful women shaping the future in tech, Team Elektra unleashes confidence and life skills in a week full of creativity, design, color, and fun. Internet of ThingsThe Internet of Things (IoT) is created and controlled with artful code. What was once the realm of desktops, laptops, and smartphones, now includes almost anything imaginable from cars to refrigerators, to traffic signals and multitudes of sensors. Understanding these systems can be very empowering while navigating our world. Those able to create such systems will be tackling many of Earth’s greatest problems and filling the marketplace with new and exciting products. For the emerging innovator with programming experience, Internet of Things builds experiential knowledge through IoT design challenges. Students will code Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) using the Arduino Integrated Development Environment (IDE), control electrical circuits and communicate with each other and the Internet. These design challenges present principles of computer science, computer networks, and electrical engineering within an authentic environment. Internet of Things students return from camp—not only with experiential knowledge—but also bring home an IoT PLC kit to continue innovating. NEW- Middle School Option. Hula Hoop WeavingMake your own rug or wall hanging using a hula hoop and recycled tee shirts. Participants cut tee shirts into strips and stretch the loops across a hula hoop like the spokes of a wheel, then the weaving begins! It is a great way to learn the basic hoop weaving technique and create a fun, decorative craft for any room in the house. Backyard GardenersCome and get your hands dirty and explore your creative side. Kids will get their senses tickled this week. We’ll learn about herbs and vegetables, as well as taste them in their culinary uses. Dabble in learning about bees and honey and identifying insects of the garden. Find out what composting is and create a unique up cycled planter. We will discover what plants attract butterflies and bees and design our very own backyard butterfly garden. Red-Hot Robots!Join us for a week of fun with marvelous machines—robots! Students will explore the fundamentals of robotics and discover the science of circuits to see how robots use sensors to explore things around them. After experimenting with sound-sensing robots, line-tracking robots, amphibious robots and even robots that play soccer, the participants will be well-equipped to build a working robot to experiment with at home. Glass-O-RamaWhat can you do with melted glass and a bit of imagination? The possibilities are endless! WEEK 8: August 6-10All Star Space Camp If your child is astro “nuts,” he or she will absolutely love this camp! Participants will develop an interest for outer space or can expand a previous passion for our sensational solar system. Using the Scientific Method, campers will investigate the mechanics of unique flying machines, such as balloon-copters, boomerangs, and mini hovercrafts. They will delve into how early “pilots” navigated throughout space as they create their own sextant and sundial. Throughout the week, campers will explore the mysteries of space from an astronaut’s point of view! Aspiring astronauts will study gravity, propulsion, and the basics of rocket science with hands-on experiments and demonstrations. They will build their own Estes model rocket and prepare for grand finale rocket launch. Pottery Wheel CreationsFor first time potters or those with experience, this workshop will teach basic pottery skills using the potter’s wheel.
