So why do teens still text and drive?
25
“I don't want to miss out or be left out of anything important”
“When someone sends me a text/email, they expect me to respond right away”
“I’m at a red light, so it’s fine”
“Because I text/email all the time-it's a habit”
“It only takes a second to respond”
Under the Influence
The Why
Why might some teens use marijuana or alcohol?
The Why
● to relax● to have fun● to alter their perspective● to fit in● to experiment● to try something new
The Law: Alcohol
● Zero Tolerance Law: CA has a zero tolerance law. The legal maximum Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) is 0.01% for drivers under 21.
● Anyone under 21 who drives with alcohol in his/her system will face license suspension or revocation for one to three years.
● Drivers under 21 can still be prosecuted for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) ○ DUI convictions stay on your record now for 10 years.○ A license may be refused to a teen if he/she has a history of alcohol or drug
abuse or has used a license illegally
● A minor who is convicted of a drug or alcohol-related offense will suffer a one year license suspension, even if no driving was involved in the offense.
The Law: Marijuana
● Possession of one ounce or less can lead to serious fines (as much as $485)
● Possession of larger amounts of marijuana is a misdemeanor punishable by up to $500 and six months is jail under Health & Safety Code 11357c.
● Possession with intent to sell any amount of marijuana is a felony under Health and Safety Code 11359. Police often charge intent to sell if they see such indicia as: scales, cash, multiple packages, "commercial" packaging materials, "excessive" quantity, pay-owe seets, address books, pagers, etc.
The Effects
When you are under the influence your judgement is impaired.
