audition packet, please contact the Middle School Honor Choir Coordinator, Glenda Bernhardt ([email protected]), for more detailed information. While I understand that this change will require extra time of you as an individual, I am certain that the result will be a well balanced ensemble. I urge you to encourage your students to embrace this opportunity that will certainly help to prepare them for live auditions at the high school level. Please take a moment to visit the CMEA website, www.calmusiced.com, and read about the upcom-ing CMEA Professional Development Conference in Pasadena, March 17th – 19th. With wonderful boot camps, inspirational interest sessions, and a fabulous exhibit hall, this year’s conference prom-ises to provide you with an enriching experience. Best of luck to you as you embark on the secondleg of this marathon.

It’s hard to believe another school year is half over, and Spring-time will soon be here. I am excited that we are still offering two dates and two locations for our annual Solo and Ensemble Festival. Students of any age may attend the S&E Festival. It is a fun event that provides positive encouragement and feedback for your student. Students can prepare one solo piece (accompanied or unaccompanied) or two shorter pieces to play for an adjudicator. Ensembles of any type are welcome. Depending of the age of the student, a selected performance piece can be anywhere from two minutes to eight minutes in length. Memorization is not required. Students should bring a copy of their piece with measures numbered for the adjudicator. Please be sure to have students check-in 30 minutes prior to their scheduled time. If you do choose to have an accompanist, please make appropriate arrangements as CCS does not provide this service. For the convenience of our membership, we have the following dates and sites for this event:

ATTENTION!

The inclusion of an Honor Choir at the CCS Middle School/Junior High Honors Concert was created approximately ten years ago. Only a small number of middle schools in our section had choral programs at that time, but we felt that we wanted to encourage our students to strive for excellence and saw the addition of an honor choir as a wonderful way to achieve that goal. We began by asking choir directors to recommend up to twelve of their best choral students to perform in the honor choir. We have continued this process in the formation of our honor choir up until the present year. The CCS Middle School/Junior High Honor Choir has grown in numbers as the choral programs in our section have grown. This is very exciting and speaks to the dedication and commitment of the choral conductors in supporting the honor choir endeavor. However, as we grow in numbers, we also desire to keep a high quality of participating vocalists to insure a rewarding experience for all students. Beginning this year, the honor choir will join the honor band and honor orchestra in requiring each student to submit an audition tape or CD. We hope that all choral directors will encour-age their motivated vocalists to make an audition recording. The audition process is NOT meant to discourage students or directors from participating. It will also serve the purpose to better prepare these vocalist for the live audition process at the high school level. It is intended to allow the CCS Honor Choir to continue to raise the standard of music edu-cation and provide a truly rewarding performance experience for all the students involved.

Band Association. In addition, Mac served two terms as CCS President and is currently serving on the CCS Board as a retired member who visits schools in our section as a volunteer clinician. During the summers he teaches at the Silver Lake Music Camp, an activity he has enjoyed for twenty eight years. On December 19, 2004, the CCS Board presented Silvester McElroy with a “Lifetime Achievement Award” in recognition of his years of excellence, dedication, and service to the field of music and music education.
