The set contains four volumes of Sermons sur divers textes de L’Ecriture Sainte, three volumes of Sermons sur L’Epitre de St. Paul aux Ephesiens, and a volume of La Vie de Pierre Du Bosc Ministre du Saint Evangile. If the Protestant church could have been saved through negotiations, it is DuBosc who would have saved it.” DuBosc was exiled at the time of the Revocation and fled to Holland where he became pastor of the Walloon church in Rotterdam. SOME WONDERFUL ADDITIONS TO OUR LIBRARYTHE WORKS OF REV. PIERRE DU BOSC

The Society is thrilled to announce that a generous member has

donated eight volumes of the works of Rev. Pierre Du Bosc, published

by R. & G. Wetstein of Amsterdam in 1716. The set contains four volumes

of Sermons sur divers textes de L’Ecriture Sainte, three volumes of

Sermons sur L’Epitre de St. Paul aux Ephesiens, and a volume of La Vie

de Pierre Du Bosc Ministre du Saint Evangile. These are rare volumes

and are an important addition to our collection.

Rev. Pierre Du Bosc (1623-1692) was one of the most eloquent and

distinguished pastors of the Reformation in France. His biography in

Haag’s Biographies of French Protestants reads, “In his dealings with

the government, DuBosc displayed prudence, courage, firmness and

skill, thereby winning the esteem of Louis XIV and his ministers. If the

Protestant church could have been saved through negotiations, it is

DuBosc who would have saved it.” DuBosc was exiled at the time of

the Revocation and fled to Holland where he became pastor of the

Walloon church in Rotterdam.

WILLIAM DAWSON GAILLARD BIBLEThe Family Bible of William Dawson Gaillard (1837- 1883) and

Elizabeth Lee (1843-1916) of Charleston was also recently donated

to the Society. According to an article in Transactions 82 (1977),

their son William Dawson Gaillard, Jr. moved to New York and

was a very successful attorney.1 The Bible had made its way to a

group in Connecticut that provides Bibles for a prison ministry.

When they realized that it contained important genealogical

information, they did some research and the Bible eventually

found its way to us.

SERRE DUBOSE BIBLEAnother generous member donated the Family Bible of

Serre DuBose. Serre (1785-1815) was one of the children of

Captain Isaac DuBose and his wife Catherine Dutarque. He

married Sarah Weston Goodwin (b.1790) in 1803. The Bible

was printed in Philadelphia in 1808 and contains extensive

information on Serre and his family. Serre Dubose's baptism

was also recorded in the St. James Santee Parish Register.

He was living in Sumter County, SC in the 1810 census.

Watch for transcriptions of the family records from both

Bibles in Transactions 122. Bibles are an invaluable and

irreplaceable source of genealogical information. If you

have a family Bible, please consider sharing pictures of the

frontispiece and the pages containing family information

with a library or archive.

GENEALOGY AND THE INTERNET WORKSHOPOur Registrar Katie Hyman is having another genealogy workshop this fall. The advancement

of technology and the availability of records on the internet is changing how we do

genealogical research. There is so much information that it is hard to understand how to

access it all. Records and documents are being digitized daily and put on the internet for

easy access to help everyone from the enthusiast to the professional researcher.

How does the enthusiast and professional researcher find the documents they are looking

for? How can you find your family's lineage? Join us for our Genealogy & the Internet

Workshop. It will be a hands on learning session on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at 10:00 am.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their laptops, tablets, or ipads to use during the

workshop. The workshop is limited in size so that everyone can have individual assistance

and reservations are required. Please call Katie at (843)723-3235 to sign up.

BRONZE GRAVE MARKERS WITH THE SOCIETY SEAL NOW AVAILABLEWe now have a bronze grave marker available with the seal of the

Huguenot Society of South Carolina. They are available in 2.5”, 3”,

4” and 4.75” diameter versions. The prices are $129, $138, $158, and

$175. Please note that the markers are made on request, and we

do not have any in stock here at the Society. Please contact Renée

Marshall for information on how to order a marker.

WOULD YOU BE INTERESTED IN A LENDING LIBRARY?As with most special collection libraries and archives, our books do not circulate. Over the

years, we have acquired multiple copies of many of the history books and family genealogies

in our collection. We are considering the idea of setting up a “lending library” for our

members with some of our duplicate copies. We would charge

a small postage fee to ship books to our out of town members.

Please email Renée Marshall at [email protected] if

you would be interested in this. If enough members reply, we

will try it out on a trial basis.
