An Introduction to Sentence Combining Thisisyournewhandout.Thehandoutisonsentencecombining.Sentencecombiningisaveryimportantskill.Theskillwillhelpyouenhanceyourwrittenexpression.Youwillbecomeabetterwriter.Youwillincreaseyourunderstandingofhowsentencevarietyinfluencesstyle.Youwillsoonbecomeanexpertonthisskill.YourEnglishteacherwillbepleased.Sentencecombining,simplystated,isthestrategyofjoiningshortsentencesintolonger,morecomplexsentences.Asyouengageinsentence-combiningactivities,youwilllearnhowtovarysentencestructureinordertochangethemeaningandstyleofwhatyouwrite.Atamoretechnicallevel,sentencecombiningisconcernedwiththesystematicknowledgeofsyntacticpossibilitiesandallowswriterstosortthroughalternativesintheirheadsaswellasonpaperandtochoosethosewhicharemostapt.Thisnewhandoutonsentencecombining,averyimportantskillthatwillhelpenhanceyourwrittenexpression,willallowyou,whowillsoonbecomeanexpertandpleaseyourteacher,toincreaseyourunderstandingofhowsentencevarietyinfluencesstyle.
