We have been working closely with Brent on the plans and in February we heard the good news that we will receive a grant of £267,000 from Brent to pay for its fit-out. We expect the current building to be demolished Spring 2019 and the brand new Preston Library to open in 2020. We now know that we have at least one more full year in the current building. If you can help us to keep the library open, please do let us know. The list of classes and other activities in the library continues to grow, but if there's something else you think we should be doing, please do pop in and tell us.….and more Wilko have given us a £20 voucher to spend on stationery – much appreciated ! On April 8, we celebrated our wonderful volunteers who keep the library open and thriving. It was a chance not only to hear about future plans but also to socialise and chat to those people that we don’t see very often. This photo shows Julie, our Librarian, presenting certificates recognising the time and effort that the volunteers offer to the community. Spurs Football Club have also provided volunteers with complimentary tickets to matches in Wembley Stadium. FORTHCOMING EVENTS April 28: 12-1pm Police Surgery in the library – report crime or seek help and advice. May 11: Castles in Spain, an illustrated talk by Edward Cooper. VOLUNTEERS’

DAY

The ESOL class held a children’s Easter Egg literary Book Hunt, on the last day of school. The event was set up and partly managed by Pranav aged 8 from Preston Park Primary School. He has also attended our classes and now works with us remotely using Skype with his Mum. They enjoy working together to improve their English language skills.

At a packed screening on April 14 of It Happened Here, an alternative history of Britain under German occupation after 1940, we were given a highly entertaining introduction by the film's director, the Oscar-winning film historian and preservationist Kevin Brownlow. Kevin, who received an

honorary Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2010, remained after the screening to host an enthusiastic Q&A session. The following week, we screened another of his films, Winstanley, a historical drama about Gerrard Winstanley and the Diggers community who formed after the English Civil War. The film was introduced by historian Professor Ann Hughes, the co-editor of Winstanley's writings, and local singer/songwriter, Leon Rosselson. Drop into the library to pick up the new film programe starting May.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO KEEP THE LIBRARY OPEN. IF YOU CAN HELP, LEAVE YOUR CONTACT

DETAILS IN THE LIBRARY OR EMAIL US ON [email protected]
