It’s Employee Opinion Survey Time

All SOMC employees are encouraged to participate in the upcoming Employee Opinion Survey, which will begin, Tuesday, October 8 through October 31. The online survey is confidential and administered by Press, Ganey.

“The Employee Opinion Survey is a key indicator for both our Teamwork and Safety strategic values and is our primary resource to measure the satisfaction and engagement levels of our workforce,” Ken Applegate, director of Human Resources, said. “We encourage everyone to participate and provide honest feedback that will help us identify improvements to help make SOMC the best organization we can possibly be.”

All employees will receive an email on Oct. 8 from Press, Ganey with a link that will take you to the actual survey. The link is unique to your email address and will not require the use of a password. The link will identify you as an SOMC employee, will identify your work group and will automatically populate the survey with your demographic information (No names, employee

numbers or social security numbers will be populated. NOTE: Recently SOMC has provided employees with education about “phishing” attempts through emails and has asked employees never to click on links sent to them in emails unless they are familiar with the source. In this case, it is OK to click on the link provided.

Once you start the survey, you will identify your position, shift and whether or not you are an RN. NOTE: All responses are confidential and your demographic data (i.e. age, shift, years of service, etc.) will only be used at the organizational level. They cannot be seen at the department level; therefore, no one can identify your response or even know who has taken the survey.

Employees will be asked to answer questions related to employee engagement, employee satisfaction and safety. If you indicate that you are a RN and spend at least 50-percent of your time in direct patient care, you will receive an additional 19 questions that will be used for our efforts related to Magnet.

Once you complete the survey, it will be submitted directly to Press, Ganey. No one at SOMC will see your results, and no one at SOMC will be able to identify what your answers or comments were.

The results of the survey will be sent back to SOMC in December and will be shared with you (as in the past) via focus group meetings and postings from your department leadership. We ask you to please take the survey and be candid with your responses. The survey is optional, but your participation is appreciated, as this is an effort to make SOMC a better place to work!

If you have any questions, please call HR at ext. 8118.

Celebrating SOMC Volunteers at the Night of Inspiration

The SOMC Volunteer Office hosted their annual Night of Inspiration for the dedicated volunteers of Southern Ohio Medical Center. They enjoyed a delicious meal and time to socialize with one another. Volunteers are vital to the organization, and we appreciate them more than they know!

Even though SOMC is working on limiting the use of paper, there is still quite a bit used. Much of that paper has patient protected health information on it. When it comes time to dispose of it, be sure and place it in an approved shred container so that it can be disposed of properly. Be sure to not throw it away!

Security Reminder: Shred it!

Find Your Reason to Start Now

For nearly 40 years, Abby Floyd, SOMC Facilities Project Coordinator, has watched the hospital, evolve, change and grow, and she has had a huge hand in that process. Over the past year though, Abby decided to evolve in an area of her personal life: her own health journey.Five or six years ago, Abby joined a healthy program at work and said that she stuck with it for a while and lost some weight.

“I did lose weight at the time, which I did for my kids and my grandkids because I wanted to be around as they got older,” she said. A year ago, she decided to commit to her health journey again. She has been involved in SOMC’s Healthy Partners for years, but decided to join the first Weight Watchers at Work group in the Fall of 2018. She also joined Forever Fit to help her maintain accountability. All three of the programs are offered through Employee Health and Wellness and are available to all employees.“This time, it’s about me,” she said. “I made this decision for me this time.”Along with the accountability of these programs, Abby has deemed the key to weight loss as maintaining a log of what she consumes during the day. She said portion control and self-control is crucial for success. She emphasized, though, that she still enjoys the food she loves in moderation paired with discipline. Abby credits her job, which helped her reach her step goal during the day and keeps her active. She also maintains an active lifestyle outside of work with her family, walking and yard work.

“I like the gym and have a membership, but I just don’t have the time to get there right now,” she said. Her success didn’t come through a gym membership, although she encourages people to go and try the gym. She also said that starting the programs wasn’t intimidating at all. “This organization is fantastic,” she said. “If you want to be healthy, they give you every opportunity to be healthy and are so encouraging.”Abby said to be successful in weight loss and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, “you have to have to be willing and ready to make that change.”Her advice to those hesitating to get started is to start now. “Take care of your body; it is the only one that you’ve got,” she said. This past year has had so many positive health impacts on her life. She feels healthier overall, has more confidence than ever before and noticed medical issues she was previously experiencing are almost nonexistent or have completely improved. She invites employees to attend the Weight Watchers at Work Kick-Off in the in the Medical Staff Services Conference Room in the Braunlin Lower Level at 1 pm on Friday, October 4. This is the place where Abby’s health journey started, and she would love to share more with anyone who has additional questions!

Check out SOMC’s Online Store of Surplus Equipment

Our online auction process has been overhauled and improved with our new SOMC uBuy application. Users can log-in to the system to view items, see the minimum price and highest bid on each available item and place bids all in the same place. The principle is the same, but users can stay better informed by seeing the dollar amount of the current high bid on an item (only the amount shows and not the name of the bidder). We will still post new items on Fridays. Items will go up at 10a.m. on Friday and will be removed at 9:59a.m. the following Friday. All other processes will remain the same.
