January31,2019–Ross Greene, Ph.D.Collaborative & Proactive Solutions: Moving From Power and Control to Collaboration and Problem Solving

This is the empirically supported model Dr. Ross Greene described in his influential books -The Explosive Child, Lost at School, Lost & Found, and Raising Human Beings. The CPS model (Collaborative & Proactive Solutions Model) has transformed thinking and practices in countless families, schools, inpatient psychiatry units, and residential and juvenile detention facilities throughout the world, and has been associated with dramatic reductions in adult-child conflict, challenging behaviors, disciplinary referrals, detentions, suspensions, seclusions and physical, chemical, and mechanical restraints. The model represents a significant departure from discipline-as-usual: it focuses on solving problems rather than on modifying behavior, emphasizes collaborative rather than unilateral solutions, encourages proactive rather than reactive intervention, de-emphasizes diagnostic categories, and provides practical, research-based tools for assessment and intervention. Participants in this workshop will leave with an understanding of the underpinnings of the model, its refinements over the past 8-10 years, and practical assessment and intervention tools that can be brought back to and used in these diverse settings.

First Segment • * Key Themes/Key Questions * Why are challenging kids challenging? Explanations for challenging behavior

* When are challenging kids challenging? The clash of two forces Second Segment

• * Identifying lagging skills and unsolved problems: The ALSUP * Keeping track: The Problem-Solving Plan Third Segment

• * Overview of the The Plans * Plan B: The Empathy Step: Drilling for Information and Other Topics Fourth Segment

• * The Define Adult Concerns step: How is the Problem Affecting the Child and/or Others? * The Invitation step: Reaching Realistic and Mutually Satisfactory Solutions * Special Topics: * Implementation in Systems: Start Small * Plan B with Kids and Language Processing and Communication Delays * How are the Skills Trained?

This is a practical strategies seminar! During this full day training extensive recommendations designed for specialists and classroom teachers, to help students succeed in the academic environment, will be provided. Participants will take home numerous useful tools and creative ideas to use the very next day!

Regular-education teachers (as well as special education teachers and support staff) will find the information presented invaluable. Strategies presented will allow regular education teachers to utilize approaches within their own classroom.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of the seminar, participants will be able to:

• Describe how different explanations for the interpretations of challenging behavior in kids can lead to dramatically different approaches to intervention, and why conventional reward and punishment procedures may not be effective for many challenging kids

• Identify and assess the various cognitive skills that are central to adaptively handling life’s social, emotional, and behavior challenges

• Identify and prioritize unsolved problems precipitating challenging behavior • Describe the three basic mechanisms by which adults handle unsolved problems and unmet expectations in kids

(Plans A, B, and C) and what is accomplished by each, and the three steps or “ingredients” of Plan B • Describe how to effectively implement Plan B to solve problems, teach skills, and reduce the frequency and intensity

of challenging behavior

Make Social Regulation Stick! Practical Strategies and Tools to Build Social and Emotional Competence in Students (with Autism, ADHD, PDD-nos, Anxiety, Attention Deficits, & more) Social Regulation (Kuypers and Sautter, 2011) is the ability to adjust one’s level of alertness and modify how emotions and behaviors are revealed in order to meet social goals. Our world is filled with complicated situations that can be sticky to navigate—both emotionally and socially. It’s important to realize that within these situations, regulating emotions/behaviors and managing social communication go hand in hand. Understanding this connection helps in two basic ways: first, to zoom out, broaden the lens and look at the whole child and situation at hand, and second, to zoom in on the child’s specific challenges or delays and focus on working as a team to put together practical applications that work for each child.

This presentation— geared to educators, therapists, and other professionals who work with individuals with social cognitive, executive functioning, communication, and emotional regulation challenges—provides the glue that makes social learning stick! An overview of the components of social regulation (e.g., sensory processing, emotional regulation, executive functioning, joint attention, expressive and receptive language, pragmatic language, and perspective taking) and commonly used curricula/frameworks will be provided. With a focus on the whole child, the roles of everyone involved and how to be mindful T.E.A.M.S will be reviewed, with reflection on how to create a partnership and integrate school and home. The majority of the presentation will focus on practical strategies, tools, and concepts that can easily be used the next day to support social regulation in all aspects and environments of a child’s life. Participants will learn to embrace teachable moments using new and time-tested strategies in order to create a successful social regulation lifestyle.

This is a practical strategies seminar! During this interactive training, participants will take away functional ideas and tools (applicable for K-12th grade) to use right away to support self-regulation and social communication (i.e. social regulation).

Learning Objectives: 1. Identify and define the aspects involved with self-regulation (sensory processing, emotional regulation, executive

functioning). 2. Identify and define the aspects involved with social communication (joint attention, receptive and expressive

language, pragmatic language and perspective taking). 3. Understand the connection between self-regulation and social communication (i.e.. social regulation). 4. Understand the importance of collaboration and develop insight into how to build mindful T.E.A.M.S to support the

whole child. 5. Review specific curricula used to support social regulation. 6. Learn how mindfulness trains the brain to build pathways for social regulation. 7. Learn numerous practical tools and resources to support each area of social regulation (sensory processing,

emotional regulation, executive functioning, joint attention, receptive and expressive language, pragmatic language, and perspective taking).

8. Reflect on the importance of parents and educators caring for themselves as co-regulators.

Who Should Attend? His research has been funded by the Stanley Research Institute, the National Institutes of mental health, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Maine Juvenile Justice Advisory Group.
