    INTRODUCTION

Waste isany material which is not needed by theowner, producer or processor.

    Waste management is

the collection, transport, processing or disposal,

managing and monitoring of waste materials

The process is generally undertaken to reduce wastes

effect on health, the environment or aesthetics

Waste management is a distinct practice from resource

recovery which focuses on delaying the rate of

    consumption of natural resources

    All wastes materials, whether they

are solid, liquid, gaseous or radioactive fall within the

    remit of waste management

Solid Waste Municipal solid waste (MSW), as trash or garbage is

a waste type consisting of everyday items that arediscarded by the public

Such wastes can be extremely variable in theircomposition, depending to a large extent on thelifestyle of the generator

Although these constitute a small portion of wastes

collected from households, they are particularlyproblematic due to their hazardous characteristic, variability in chemistry and associated high recoverycosts

Liquid Waste Wastewater, is any water that has been adversely

affected in quality by anthropogenic influence

It comprises liquid waste discharged by domestic

residences, commercial properties, industry, and/oragriculture and can encompass a wide range of

    potential contaminants and concentrations

It mainly refers to the municipal wastewater thatcontains a broad spectrum of contaminants resulting

from the mixing of wastewater from homes,

businesses, industrial areas and often storm drains,

    especially in older sewer systems

Household WasteWaste management is the collection,

transport, processing or disposal, managing and monitoring of waste

    materials.

Household Waste Post-consumer waste which qualifies

    as hazardous waste when discarded

    It includes:-

    Recovery problems

Lack of available sites for sanitary

    landfill

Inadequate data on type and quantity of

    waste generated

    Separate collection and treatment of

    liquid waste is expensive

Municipal waste Municipal waste, commonly known as trash or

garbage, is a combination of all of a city's solid and

    semisolid waste.

It includes mainly household or domestic waste, but itcan also contain commercial and industrial waste with

the exception of industrial hazardous waste

waste from industrial practices that causes a threat to

    human or environmental health.

    Causes

The main sources for solid wastes are domestic, commercial, industrial, municipal, and agriculturalwastes.

The composition of a city waste is as follows:

    - Paper, wood, cardboard 53 percent- Garbage 22 percent

    - Ceramics, glass, crockery 10 percent

    - Metals 8 percent

    - Rubber, plastics, discarded textiles 7 percent The increase in the quantity of solid waste is due to

    overpopulation, affluence, and technologicaladvancement.

    The Indian Scenario

    waste generated from

    household60% are of

    recyclable plastic (RP) and

40% are non recyclableplastic (NRP) according to

    thepresent scenario.

    he maximum net weight of

MSW was observed at site3(442.17 Kg/day), while as

    minimum was observed at

    site1 (55.92Kg/day).

    Effects

    Health Hazard:If solid

    wastes are not collected and

    allowed to accumulate, they

    may create unsanitary

    conditions.

    This may lead to epidemic

    outbreaks.

    Many diseases like cholera,

    diarrhea, dysentery, plague,jaundice, or gastro-intestinal

    diseases may spread and

    cause loss of human lives.

    Environmental Impact:

If the solid wastes are not

    treated properly,

    decomposition and

    putrefaction may take place,

    causing land and water

    pollution .

    when the waste products

    percolate down into theunderground water

    resources.

    Control Measures

The main purpose of solid wastemanagement is to minimize theadverse effects on theenvironment. The steps

involved are:- Collection of solid wastes

    - Disposal of solid wastes

    - Utilization of wastes

    The method of collection,

transportation, processing, resource recovery, and finaldisposal should be synchronizedfor effective implementation.

To further reduce waste, somecities are currently promoting

    policies of zero waste.

    Zero waste itself means

    reduced waste generation and

    the 100% diversion of the

    remainder of waste from

    landfills to productive uses via

    materials reuse, recycling,

    repair and composting.

    Zero waste products should also

    have minimal negative

    environmental impacts over

    their lifecycles
