Matthew 28:18-20: The Commissioning of the Disciples

Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go,

therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of

the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always,

until the end of the age.”

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish has a rich, black cultural history. From its formation in 1920, the Black

Catholics of Anacostia contributed to its development and growth through their sacrifices of time, talent, skills and funds to provide a parish plant of their own. Thus, the

uniqueness of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish places it in a leadership position to interact with other Black and non-

black parishes in utilizing the gifts of Black spirituality through music, dance, education, and special action.

MISSION STATEMENT: We, the people, of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, therefore, acknowledge that our Pastoral Mission is to proclaim Christ and teach the “Good News”, to worship and bear witness in the community, to love and serve as Jesus commanded, and to preserve and share our rich Black heritage.

VISION STATEMENT: “A Roman Catholic church that is actively visible in the Community, shares its spirituality through fellowship, and is committed to serving God.”

CORE VALUES BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS: We will always speak the truth, respect the opinions and roles of all parishioners, and value each person, always maintaining Christian charity in all of our actions.

SPIRITUAL GROWTH: We will seek to increase the understanding of our Catholic faith and expand our spiritual growth by participating in and supporting charitable and spiritual activities, in addition to attending Mass.

STEWARDSHIP: We will become involved in church activities and commit our time, talent and treasures.

INCLUSION: We will be open and inviting by extending ourselves to all by sharing in our parish life; thereby, reaffirming our vision of being actively visible in the community.

LEGACY: We will preserve our rich Black cultural history by respecting the past, continuing in service and faith in the present, and committing to the future of OLPH.

Quote for the Week

"The only safeguard against evil thoughts is to fill the mind with the

word of God."

Did you know that a new Marian Feast Day has

been added to the calendar? The Memorial of

the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church

will be celebrated on the Monday following

Pentecost each year. Devotion to Mary under

this title is nothing new, but it's being shared

more formally in the recent decades. Pope Paul

VI declared Mary the Mother of the Church

during Vatican II, Pope John Paul II wrote about

her under that title in one of his encyclicals, and

Pope Francis has now added this feast day to the

church calendar.

“My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Blessed Sacrament. I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there, and unite myself wholly to you. Pentecost is sometimes called the birthday

of the Church. The Gospel for Pentecost reminds us that the Church begins with

the command to forgive. Within the family, the domestic Church, we learn how to forgive and how to accept forgiveness. The gift of the Holy Spirit enables us to do

both. Today is a fitting time to share a family celebration of reconciliation. As

you gather together as a family, sit quietly for a few minutes, inviting everyone to

reflect upon their need to forgive and to receive forgiveness. If there is a situation or an issue within the family that needs

attention, spend some time reflecting on how your family might address it. Read together today’s Gospel, John 20:19-23.

Talk together about how Jesus gave us the gift of the Holy Spirit to help us in the

work of forgiveness and to bring us peace. Pray together today’s Psalm or the Prayer

to the Holy Spirit, asking that the Holy Spirit help your family. Share with one

another a Sign of Peace.

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful. And kindle in them the fire of your

love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you shall renew the face of the

earth. O God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful,

grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations,

through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Holy Spirit

In art the Holy Spirit is often depicted as a dove. This is probably because in the New Testament we first meet the Holy Spirit at the baptism of Jesus. Some of the passages that depict the Holy Spirit as a dove include the following: . . . and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove [and] coming upon him. (Matthew 3:16) . . . and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. (Mark 1:10) . . . and the holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. (Luke 3:22)

PARISHIONER TIDBITS

What is intercessory prayer? Intercessory prayer is

where we make requests to God on behalf of other people.

Who should we pray for? The bible exhorts us to

intercede for all types of groups and people: church leaders, those in authority (managers, politicians, and anyone in a position of power in society); those who are ill; family and friends; enemies and those who mistreat or persecute us; all people should be prayed for.

ENTERING THE HOSPITAL? Parishioners planning to enter the hospital are encouraged to receive the Sacrament of the Sick prior to admission. Because of privacy laws, hospitals no longer notify parishes of a parishioner’s stay. Please notify the Rectory of the name of person, hospital and room number, also when the person returns home.

Parishioners who are sick or homebound and unable to attend Mass on Sunday may request to receive the Eucharist. Even if you are ill for a short period of time you are most welcome to receive a home visit. Please call the Parish Office to make arrangements.

It is known that no one has been left untouched by the COVID-19 crisis. Everyone’s life has been disrupted. Everyone’s life has changed. All of us have had to deal with unexpected cancellations, sudden shutdowns, and painful closures. Some of these have been a minor inconvenience. Others have been difficult to accept. And still others have been devastating. The one word that embodies all of these experiences is loss. We have all lost something during this pandemic. And with the loss there comes confusion, sadness, anger, and grief. So let us offer prayer for everyone: Pray for those people who are hurting and going through some unimaginable circumstances. Pray for those who want their lives to be better and all to be free from things that may be holding them back. Even though you may not know them, God knows their situation!

Every 10 years, the US Census counts every single person living in the United States. The novel coronavirus that has spread across the United States has begun to cause social and economic havoc, and the Census Bureau's efforts have also been affected. The Birthday of the Church

Missionary Disciples pledge to Witness to the Mission and Ministry of Jesus Christ to the World - We renewed

our Baptismal Promises at Easter to reject Satan and declared our

Catholic Faith in the Nicene Creed, which we profess every Sunday. We

know the ministry needs of our parish family and community are many.

We are conscious of the many gifts and blessings bestowed on us the

people of God at Our Lady of Perpetual Help for almost 100 years. We

clearly understand and accept that we are sent as Jesus was sent, called to go and make disciples of all the

nations, to go and proclaim the Gospel to the whole world, go and produce fruit that will last. So with God's

help and the help of our brothers and sisters in Christ, we declare our commitment today!

Do you believe that God and His Church in the Sacrament of Baptism has anointed you

as priest prophet and king? I DO!

Do you believe that God has blessed you with the Gifts, indeed to use you to carry out

the Mission and Ministry of Jesus Christ? I DO!

Do you believe that the Holy Spirit has empowered you to use those gifts at this time

and in this place? I DO!

Will you pledge your commitment to carry out the Mission and Ministry of Jesus Christ

in your Family, in your Church, at your School, at your work place and in your

community as a Missionary Disciple? I WILL THROUGH THE GRACE OF GOD!

Will you faithfully engage the ministry needs of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and

Anacostia and discern God’s call to you to give of your time, talent and treasure to His

Mission and Ministry?

I WILL!

Will you commit to being a true Missionary Disciple, practicing the Spirituality of a

Disciple of Jesus Christ, reaching beyond your human limitations and committing

yourself to help others come to deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and His Body the

Church? I WILL!

ALL:

May the Gifts of the Holy Spirit empower and guide us the People of God at Our

Lady of Perpetual Help to be Missionary Disciples. May we celebrate the

generosity of our good and gracious God! May the Light of Christ shine brightly

Page 9: Solemnity of Pentecost Sunday May 31, 2020 · 5/31/2020  · OLPH History, Mission Statement, Vision Statement and Core Values Matthew 28:18-20: The Commissioning of the Disciples

from this Parish Community and May our pledges today produce much fruit, fruit

that will last! Thus, may our world be renewed and may Jesus Christ, Our Lord,

Our Savior, Our Brother and indeed our Friend be praised! AMEN!

“Holy Spirit guide me to serve His Mission and Ministry on at least one of these priorities or under one of these needs!!!”

Thank you for Praying the Novena to the Holy Spirit as we seek to build bridges in our Churches and Society. And now for personal reflection.... The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are

enumerated in Isaiah 11:2-3. They are present in their fullness in Jesus Christ but are found in all Christians

who are in a state of grace. We receive them when we are infused with sanctifying grace, the life of God within

us—as, for example, when we receive a sacrament worthily. As the current Catechism of the Catholic Church

notes, "They complete and perfect the virtues of those who receive them." Infused with His gifts, we respond to

the promptings of the Holy Spirit as if by instinct, the way Christ Himself would.

Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit Holy Spirit, Divine Counselor, I adore you as my God, with God the Father and God the Son. I give you my heart and I offer my ardent thanksgiving for all the grace which you never cease to bestow on me. I beg you visit me and with your love and grace grant me the Gifts of......

1. Wisdom - is the first and highest gift of the Holy Spirit, because it is the perfection of faith. Through wisdom, we come to value properly those things which we believe through faith. The truths of Christian belief are more important than the things of this world, and wisdom helps us to order our relationship to the created world properly, loving Creation for the sake of God, rather than for its own sake. 2. Understanding - is the second gift of the Holy Spirit, and people sometimes have a hard time understanding (no pun intended) how it differs from wisdom. While wisdom is the desire to contemplate the things of God, understanding allows us grasp, at least in a limited way, the very essence of the truths of the Catholic Faith. Through understanding, we gain a certitude about our beliefs that moves beyond faith. 3. Counsel - is the third gift of the Holy Spirit, is the perfection of the cardinal virtue of prudence. Prudence can be practiced by anyone, but counsel is supernatural. Through this gift of the Holy Spirit, we are able to judge how best to act almost by intuition. Because of the gift of counsel, Christians need not fear to stand up for the truths of the Faith, because the Holy Spirit will guide us in defending those truths. 4. Fortitude - is a gift of the Holy Spirit and a cardinal virtue. Fortitude is ranked as the fourth gift of the Holy Spirit because it gives us the strength to follow through on the actions suggested by the gift of counsel. While fortitude is sometimes called courage, it goes beyond what we normally think of as courage. Fortitude is the virtue of the martyrs that allows them to suffer death rather than to renounce the Christian Faith. 5. Knowledge - often confused with both wisdom and understanding. Like wisdom, knowledge is the perfection of faith, but whereas wisdom gives us the desire to judge all things according to the truths of the Catholic Faith, knowledge is the actual ability to do so. Like counsel, it is aimed at our actions in this life. In a limited way, knowledge allows us to see the circumstances of our life the way that God sees them. Through this gift of the Holy Spirit, we can determine God's purpose for our lives and live them accordingly. 6. Piety - is the perfection of the virtue of religion. While we tend to think of religion today as the external elements of our faith, it really means the willingness to worship and to serve God. Piety takes that willingness beyond a sense of duty, so that we desire to worship God and to serve Him out of love, the way that we desire to honor our parents and do what they wish. 7. Fear of the Lord - is the fear of the Lord, and perhaps no other gift of the Holy Spirit is so misunderstood. We think of fear and hope as opposites, but the fear of the Lord confirms the theological virtue of hope. This gift of the Holy Spirit gives us the desire not to offend God, as well as the certainty that God will supply us the grace that we need in order to keep from offending Him. Our desire not to offend God is more than simply a sense of duty; like piety, the fear of the Lord arises out of love.

The Fruits of the Holy Spirit-The gifts of the Holy Spirit perfect the supernatural virtues by enabling us to practice

them with greater docility to divine inspiration. As we grow in the knowledge and love of God under the direction of the Holy Spirit, our service becomes sincerer, more generous, and the practice of virtue becomes more perfect. Such acts of virtue leave the heart filled with joy and consolation and are known as Fruits of the Holy Spirit. Prayer-Come, O Divine Spirit, fill my heart with Thy heavenly fruits, Thy charity, joy, peace, patience, benignity, goodness, faith, mildness, and temperance, that I may never weary in the service of God, but by continued faithful submission to Thy inspiration may merit to be united eternally with Thee in the love of the Father and the Son. Amen.
