Fraud Prevention
Stop shredding your earnings.
Paper is expensive. Why bother printing out a document onto paper for signing if it is going to end up being scanned into electronic format, and shredded at a later time anyways? Media discontinuities such as this, cost time and money.
Legal experts have confirmed that electronic documents signed with SignDoc offer at least the same level of security as signed paper documents.

E-Signing
Laws and regulations for electronic signatures vary around the globe. Most of these laws are similar with the "European Parliament and Council Directive 1999/93/EG about a Framework for Electronic Signatures" which supports a broad technological approach to electronic signatures. The directive became law in the European countries subsequently beginning in the year 2000. It defines levels of electronic signatures which are considered as "simple", "advanced" or "qualified".
SignDoc fulfills the definition of an “advanced electronic signature”. The idea of this type of signature is to provide a proof of intent of a signer and legally binding evidence of a transaction. The trustworthiness of electronic documents is closely linked to the power of proof for authenticity and integrity in the particular application and workflow. In addition to the option to verify the dynamic signature, this form of signature requires encryption and the option to check that a document has not been tampered with.
As an example the following processes were identified as suitable for the electronic signing with SignDoc: The deposit and withdrawal of cash, the purchase and sale of varieties and their orders, bank transfers, direct debits, the cash-query, the cash accounts, creating and editing standing orders, charge backs, the opening and termination of accounts and savings accounts, address changes, and the ordering and delivery of precious metals.

Determine the savings potential
The potential savings from the abandonment of paper for the collection and processing of handwritten signatures may be calculated due to the elimination of various steps in the processing of documents: printing, storing, preparing, signing, transmission, sending, scanning, indexing, and physical archiving.
Check www.softpro.de/roi for details.
More quality in customer service
Where SignDoc is already in use, the digital processing of the signature is recognized as a significant improvement in perceived quality of service.

SignPads capture quantifiable characteristics of handwritten signatures in the best quality

Together with Wacom SOFTPRO also offers over a wide range of devices for high-quality capturing of signatures. With and without display.

Trustworthy Signature Capturing
SignPads have been specially developed for high-quality capturing of
signatures. The wide use of more than 10,000 SignPads in Spanish
savings banks in 2009 was awarded the Innovation Prize of the
Association for IT security TeleTrusT. These signature pads with LCD
display are the result of the close partnership of SOFTPRO and the
world market leader for pen tablets – Wacom – which started back in
2000.
SignPads leverage Wacom's “Penabled”-technology which is capturing
the signals of signatures throughout the writing process based on
electro-magnetic resonance. This technology allows a very accurate
recording of signature data. It also enables very robust signature pad
building so that the displays are not subject to wear and tear by
scratches.
While signing, both the position of the pen as well as the intensity of
the writing pressure is measured very precisely. This allows very
precise profiles of time and location coordinates as well as the
pressure levels are recorded and may be easily compared. Digitized
signatures receive a higher level of proof. Another advantage
compared to alternative technologies: If one touches with the ball of
the signature field, there is no interference with SignPads. A faulty
operation is excluded.
Wacom's Penabled technology also works in Interactive Pen Displays,
most Tablet PCs and some smart phones and tablets running on
Android. SignDoc supports all of these device types for filling and
signing the document on the display.
• Wacom’s Interactive Pen Displays are a popular choice for
counters in flagship stores and self-service areas plus some other
application environments where a large display is favorable. These
devices allow to display a typical document in A4 or letter size in
full size on display sizes from 10” to 24”.
• SignDoc won several Microsoft awards as highly recommended
application for Tablet PCs.
Wet Ink meets Digital Ink
Wherever a process still requires including a paper receipt and/or the
focus is primarily on capturing of the signature image, SOFTPRO is
offering additional pen pads and writing tablets – like the Wacom’s
Bamboo Pad or Intous Pro tablets. Even SignPads may be combined
with “inking pens” - an alternative to the standard pen (digitizer) with
its polyacetal tip. Using the inking pen for signature capturing
enhances the quality of captured signature data* and hence enables
better results of automatic signature verification.

* Users sign on paper in the way they are used to, and the only difference is that that there is a sensor underneath the paper digitizing the signature data throughout the writing process.
This capturing procedure requires no change in the signing behavior and is totally unobtrusive.

What makes SignPads special
• The surface allows a natural signing experience – like signing on paper.
• The digital ink appears on the screen without any delay, ultra-sharp and fast.
• Excellent readability of the display of text and graphics, also when used in very bright environments. Particularly accurate data collection through high resolution accuracy.
• Extremely reliable, calibrated, uniformly distributed capture differentiable pressure levels without interpolation. The wide end-to-end sensors of SignPads are offering enough space to cater for long names (such as compound names)
• Highest standards for quality assurance in production.
Who pulls the data recorded signatures for an automatic comparison realizes quickly the particularly high quality of SignPads. Such a comparison possible for example in combination with signature references stored in SignArchive or SignBase.

Compact Class
Particularly suitable for mobile usage in the field, but also for consultants, wherever only some or no corresponding text on the pad must be displayed and the customer sees the form in the display of the consultant.
S ignPad Wacom STU-300
Compact and lightweight, completely optimized for mobile use. For example: The pen can be transported in the click-in tray completely protected.

SignPads built into the counter at the POS - for example the Swiss telephone operators Sunrise
SignPads at tellers, counters and consultant desks in branches and consulting centers
SignPads at the check out of retails stores for signing electronic receipts or returns – e.g. at IKEA
Appealing Design
The design of SignPads reflects the claim of taking Signatures seriously. It is timeless without fashionable frills and makes users confident of using it. SignPads can be easily integrated into different branch and shop concepts
As seen in many places
Today SignPads are in use in financial institutions, telecommunication, government agencies, furniture retailers, fashion houses, medical practices and in many other areas. Read what satisfied customers say about SignPads

Top marks in durability
Alternative technologies to Wacom’s Penabled technology allow only a limited hardening of the display surface. The more often these displays are signed the more prone they are to look blunt and dull and become unaesthetic.
Guaranteed Robustness
SignPads come with a three-year warranty.
Business Class
Particularly suitable for use at the counter, cash register and consultants desks. The very sharp 5” display with 800 x 480 pixels allows to present extensive texts which may be relevant for the purpose of the signature – like terms & conditions.
SignPad Wacom STU-530
Economy Class
Based on similar platform with monochrome positive reflective screen. Caters for all applications with less additional focus on display of text and images on the pad beside signature capturing. This type of display is best suited for bright light environments

E-sign any file type – whether Word, Excel, computer-aided design (CAD) files …
• Display the file you intend to sign in your native application.
• Just start your printing application, select the “SOFTPRO PDF & TIFF Converter” and the file will be converted on-the-fly into a PDF or TIFF and displayed in SignDoc.
• Sign and you’re done.
Trustworthy Signing of
Electronic Documents
SignDoc is the natural, simple yet effective method to sign digital
which everyone understands. It is the equivalent to the traditional
signing ceremony on paper for the 21st century.
Electronic documents are legally signed and sealed, including the
biometric characteristics of handwritten signatures.
SOFTPRO’s applications are available as clients for desktop, web and mobile devices.
SignDoc Desktop
Rich client which can be called from a customer’s application. SignDoc Desktop comes with a broad range of additional features –like the conversion of all file types into PDF or TIFF, attaching files, sticky notes, scribbles, combine with digital certificates and add an additional level of trust to the signature in embedding images taken from a web cam at the time of signing.
Easy and fast integration of all features into customer applications through the SignDoc ActiveX component (part of SignDoc Desktop).
SignDoc Web
Real thin client to integrate E–Signing in applications running in a web browser or applications utilizing a web-browser (like hybrid mobile Apps).
SignDoc Desktop and SignDoc Web compliment each other, providing the ideal solution for organizations who have requirements for signing in both disconnected and connected modes. For example, field personnel can complete a transaction remotely using SignDoc Desktop Client and synchronize with SignDoc Web when they get back to the office.
SignDoc Mobile
Client extension of SignDoc Web for devices running on iOS, Android and Windows 8 to display, fill and sign on tablets. Easy to integrate in existing apps and web portals of organizations.

SignDoc for Adobe Reader
Plug-In to integrate E-Signing with Handwritten Signatures in environments of the Adobe Digital Enterprise Platform (ADEP), the former Adobe LiveCycle Enterprise Suite.
SOFTPRO’s applications are built on the solid base of these two Software Development Kits – SignDoc SDK and SignWare SDK. SignDoc Desktop is their reference implementation.
http://sp-l.de/gcaj
There is more in the signature field than meets the eye: In addition to the signature image, a document signed with SignDoc contains the static characteristics and dynamic (biometric) signals of the signature.
Immediately after signing on the SignPad the data of the signature and the contents of the document are stored encrypted. In addition, an integrity value is created (technical term "hash code"), which allows to detect any manipulation of the document after signing.

End-to-End Workflow
Here’s an example for the truly “green workflow” with SignDoc Web:
Select prepared documents in a web application for presentation, completion of data and signing with SignDoc Web.
These documents may optionally be pre-filled with data from other data sources - for example CRM-systems, patient records databases, production tracking systems…
Once the “eSign” button is pressed the data captured in the application is merged with the form and passed to SignDoc for e-Signing.
If the form is modifiable, required changes can be made within the SignDoc Web interface and then e-Signed.
When the signing process is completed, SignDoc hands back a secure PDF, along with the XML data, to the core application for continued processing by your document management system or for archiving.
Easy Deployment
In SignDoc forms can be filled-in, signed and sealed with a trustworthy legally binding electronic handwritten signature. SignDoc has been deployed by small organizations and the world’s largest enterprises.
SignDoc Desktop is a standalone rich client E-Signature application ready to automate tedious paper signing processes. The easiest way to integrate it with a minimum of coding is to choose the SignDoc ActiveX component which is part of SignDoc Desktop.
SignDoc Web enables browser-based signing within your core business application by adding a signature control — usually in the form of an “eSign” button.
SignDoc is designed to give you quick, out-of-the-box functionality. Check out the extensive feature overview on our webpage.

Software Development Kit
Capturing of a signature with information on static characteristics and dynamic signals
Successful e-business is based on the trust of business partners
in the security of their data exchange. Self authentication is
required in log-in windows for network access, web applications,
home banking and various other individual programs.
SignWare® consists of a Software Development Kit (SDK) allowing
to build your own applications leveraging the full potential of
trustworthy biometric signatures.
SignWare® is the ultimate e-Signature Toolkit
Applications making use of SignWare provide a
convenient and secure way for authentication with
the unique handwritten signature.
Unique
For every signer a unique reference data set is created in SignWare. During the enrollment process, SignWare® is assessing the quality of this set. Applications using SignWare will verify two aspects of the signature of a registered signer, the static image of the signature as well as the invisible biometric characteristics of the writing movement such as speed and pressure.
Easy Integration
Programming Interfaces: C, C++, C#, ActiveX/ .NET, Java & environments supporting C-function calls, servlet and web services API

Operational risk - the risk of loss resulting from inadequate or
failed internal processes, people, systems or external events - has
become prevalent in today’s business environment. Operational
risk encompasses the failure to implement strategic objectives
and initiatives in a successful, timely and cost-effective manner.
Subcategories of that risk include Process Risk, People Risk,
Systems Risk and External Events Risk. All financial institutions
today are subject to the serious effects of operational risk. Without
adequate systems and the right mitigation strategy losses are
unavoidable.
Although the use of checks is decreasing, America’s affinity to
checks is diminishing slowly: 19,6 bn checks were written in 2012
alone. The Check 21 Act in the USA opened the door to both
efficient image processing, and at the same time eliminates
traditional security features such as touch, smell, and feel of
paper. Such image-based check transactions pose a threat with
serious loss consequences.
Check fraud crime is easy to commit with little downside risk to the
perpetrator. Enhanced financial products, services and customer
access as well as enabling technologies such as scanners, all
increase the avenues of opportunity for fraud.
Searching for fraud amongst the billions of transactions does not
need to be like searching for a needle in a haystack. FraudOne is
the holistic and sustainable way to address all relevant aspects of
check fraud and effectively lower the operational risk. This
solution is successfully in production at leading financial
institutions around the globe, and securing millions of transactions
every day.
US Banks have stopped $7 bn in losses from check fraud in 2012.
FraudOne is one of the most effective measures of fraud
mitigation.

Check a Focus on Day 1
Developing the Counter Strategy
Are your risks primarily on Day 1, or Day 2 of the check processing cycle? Today, operational risk mitigation typically occurs on day 2 at a centralized location. As a result, day 1 activities such as check cashing, deposit acceptance with less cash, movement of funds, new account openings and record changes expose you to additional risk as fraud operators move their activities to day 1 to avoid detection.
As banks move to distributed capture and an image-enabled environment, fraud filters can be placed at the point of origin. Our consultants can review your day 2 detection capabilities and develop a strategy to move either the entire functionality, or portions of it, to day 1 based on your individual needs.
World Class Consulting
Sh aring Best Practice
Financial institutions around the globe have trusted SOFTPRO to help them mitigate risk. The experience and lessons learned put SOFTPRO in a unique position to share industry best practices with you. We can provide you with assistance to review the progress-to-date on loss reduction goals, tweaking your FraudOne system, improving false positive ratios, and reviewing database quality.
The Holistic Approach
Because Silos simply don’t work
Systems that target a single type of fraud are unable to effectively identify fraudulent items and additionally produce a high number of non-fraud suspects that cost time and money to process. SOFTPRO’s products target all prevalent types of check fraud such as forged signatures, forged endorsements, and counterfeits to name a few. The products take into account many factors such as image data and transactional information and with the help of SOFTPRO’s consulting expertise, these products can be tuned to achieve outstanding results.
In addition to analyzing your individual risk profile, our consultants are available to assist you with business case development, proof of concept, and loss analysis and stratification.
The Right Tools
Combined Risk Scoring
FraudOne® incorporates a scoring component called Combined Risk Score (CRS) that is highly effective in distinguishing between real suspect items, and good items. Our consultants can help you to best utilize this unique technology by showing you how to adjust it to exactly match your individual risk profile and maximize your CRS results.

In addition to optimizing your check verification processes, SOFTPRO also offers consulting services to help you mitigate existing and emerging operational risks such as those created by organizational changes (e.g. mergers/consolidations leading to disparate tools and filters, general organizational issues, etc.).
An unclear risk mitigation strategy exposes your institution to losses. Let us help you to define a holistic approach to operational risk which includes all relevant departments and banking centers.

increasing sophistication of criminals, the banking industry has
become an easy target for check fraud crimes.
SOFTPRO is proud to introduce the first effective next-generation
fraud detection solution: FraudOne®.
Unlike other solutions that loosely integrate independent silo
detection systems, FraudOne is based on a holistic, flexible, cost -
effective, and proven approach. The platform-based system
architecture combines several complementary image processing
technologies to effectively identify suspicious payment items, and
ensure that you do not waste time looking at inaccurately flagged
suspects (false positives). To achieve this, FraudOne incorporates
a unique risk-scoring technique that significantly reduces false
positives so that you can concentrate on only the real suspects.

In co-operation with six of the U.S. banking industry’s leading institutions, SOFTPRO defined check fraud prevention best-practice requirements in 2001 as part of the FraudOne initiative.
These activities have resulted in SOFTPRO’s implementation of the first truly effective image-based fraud prevention solution based on SOFTPRO products and services: FraudOne.
Secure and Low-risk investment
Unlike other fraud detection systems, FraudOne fits into your institution’s current infrastructure and not vice versa so that it can be implemented with minimal changes to your existing back-office infrastructure.
The FraudOne platform can quickly and easily be adapted with new detection functionality and fraud profiles as industry fraud patterns change. With FraudOne, we are committed to providing you with a secure and future-proof investment that will continue to provide value as industry demands change.

“When we first started looking into an image-based fraud detection solution, we were skeptical that we could find a product on the market that would satisfy our business requirements, be cost-effective, and be able to perform in a highly complex check processing environment such as Bank of America’s.
We did an extensive search of all vendors on the market. SOFTPRO convinced us that they would be the right partner for us based on the quality of their product, their ability to correctly identify fraud, and their professionalism as a company.
Their products exceeded our expectations by enabling us to reduce our false positives by 50%, as well reduce our losses due to counterfeit and forged maker s ignature checks by 60%!
We are convinced that we made the right choice by selecting SOFTPRO."

Enhancements
Modular enhancement options protect your investment:
Upgrading to SignBase
enables you to manage signature snippets. Semi-automatic cleaning removes image elements that are not part of the signature (e.g. lines and boxes, rubber stamps, background graphics etc.). Optionally, a form-independent cleaning of grey-scale snippets is available.
Signing rules are stored in free text form. Optimizing your workflow requires that these rules are managed in a normalized way. Upgrading to SignBase® allows to store and display the rules unambiguously and clearly.
Support of “four-eyes“-principle.
Improved Security
Data capturing via SCSI TAIN scanners or import file interfaces
Optional signature card snippets migration from existing document archives (using the SignPlus® Archive Interface Server) or existing InfoSign databases
Data and Image Capturing
Every single data update is recorded in a protocol and can be audited at any time..
Customer authentication data easily retrievable across branches.
Easy capturing, safe management and flexible updates (e.g. verification thresholds).
In addition to signature cards, further document images can be stored, e. g. photos, ID card copies and other identity information – your choice of b/w monochrome or grayscale images (optional).
Easy to maintain
Use SignCheck for a full automation of your signature verification process (configurable workflow, automatic signature and signing rules verification).
SignDoc allows you to add signing of electronic documents to your workflow.

verification
visual signature
SignBase® - the basic module of SignPlus® - is the ideal starting-
point for automatic signature verification. SignBase displays
signatures and signing rules at every workstation within seconds
while offering convenient administration. Forget old signature
cards or inflexible data bases. The use of signature verification as
an automatic process in the background removes the burden from
branch offices. SignBase workflow increases efficiency and
reduces risk of fraud.
All Answers at a Glimpse
SignBase offers an unparalleled overview – independent of pre-
formatted forms. Concern of authorized signers with certain
signing rights is eliminated. The signing rules of authorized signers
are displayed clearly even if rules are very complex.
Reference Data easily updated
Some reference signatures may have been initially captured many
years ago or captured in poor quality. Consequently, there is a
need to update reference databases. SignBase has the ability to
add so-called ”variants” to reference signatures. The use of
”variants” enables SignBase to account for the natural variation
within an individual’s signature. Furthermore, users benefit from
current technology including high-resolution scanning and high-
capacity storage. Capturing variants requires minimal effort, data
may be taken from regular checks or giro forms.
Clean Signature Images
Scanned signatures may include disruptive background
information With the use of an optional automated cleaning
module, printed lines, boxes, stamps or images in the background
are removed. This ensures the storage of a clean signature image
and improves the accuracy of the verification process. This
sophisticated algorithm has been successfully proven world wide.
Another option is to clean grey images - independent of pre-
defined forms.

• Additional capturing and administration of biometric
data utilizing writing tablets and Tablet PCs in
combination with SignTeller Verification
SOFTPRO has compiled a list of quality criteria for digitizing
signatures throughout the signing process, based on its
experience with more than 200 customers in financial
institutions worldwide.
SignPlus also supports the capturing of static images via
TWAIN-compatible SCSI-scanners.
The availability of writing tablets (e.g. in the teller
environment) or TabletPCs (in mobile scenarios) enables
paper-less signature verification. In addition, these devices
greatly improve the verification accuracy by capturing
biometric characteristics such as writing pressure, speed
and acceleration.
SignBase is used in hundreds of financial institutes
worldwide including Barclays, Citigroup, Discover
Financial, Lloyds TSB and UniCredit HypoVereinsbank
plus regional or national institutes.
The solution contains the experiences of the SOFTPRO
team and its partners from various project requirements
of more than one and a half decades.

SignCheck® closes the last gap in the automation of payment
processing with automatic signature and check stock verification
that offers unparalleled levels of reliability. Unlike visual
verification, automatic signature and check stock verification is
reliable, accurate and scalable.
Increased Security and Streamlined Workflow
SignCheck incorporates analytical knowledge from a team of
highly-sophisticated forensic writing experts. Their experience was
reflected in the training of the neural network and the fuzzy logic in
SignCheck. Fraud Specialists are able to focus on questionable
items only, eliminating traditional “needle in a hay stack” analysis.
Verification thresholds can be lowered to high fraud areas to
optimize fraud detection. Check value may be used to set
thresholds for verification. These settings may be adjusted daily,
depending on changing security requirements.
Reliable, Fast and Audit-proof
Results of all workflow processes are stored in a result file and
may be directly used by other systems processing (storage in
payment image archives, merging with debiting checks).
SOFTPRO’s customers process most of their transaction items
automatically, thanks to ongoing optimization of reference data,
forms and the workflow itself.
SignCheck is scalable to process almost any number of
transactions within a given operating window. Scalability is
achieved through the addition of hardware and no code changes
are required. Since the parameters of workflow and verification
procedures can be configured and customized, and because
SignCheck supports multiple banks, it is the perfect fit for both
insourcing and outsourcing scenarios. This gives you the flexibility
to adapt quickly to eventual business changes.
SignCheck provides audit security to meet Basel II requirements:
Verification results are completely documented and may be
reproduced at any time.
20
Some examples for the static characteristics of a signature image
SignCheck extracts and weighs 60 different primary and 500 secondary static signature characteristics and combines them in parameter vectors.
After calculation, a neural network is used to define the level of similarity between a signature and a reference. The natural variation of a signature is taken into account throughout the comparison.
Best In Class SignCheck has proven its technological leadership in independent vendor tests with impressive results.
Recently, SignCheck successfully passed a qualification test held by key financial institutions in the United States and was ranked best in its class.

The Signature Professionals
Company Profile
Signatures. Our passion. Our profession. Our world.
Founded in 1983 by Heinz Reschke, the company initially
developed individual software solutions for various
industries. Visual comparison of signatures supported by
PCs was started in 1987, triggered by growing demand from
major financial institutions. Shortly after this SOFTPRO –
along with IBM and APP Informatik Davos – started the
development of automatic signature verification. The
automatic verification is based on a neural network and
fuzzy logic.
The first automatic verification went into production in
1994. Intellectual property rights for the automatic
verification were acquired from IBM in 1998. In recent years
SOFTPRO extended its product range through FraudOne and
the use and verification of dynamic (biometric)
characteristics of signatures.
