    State [email protected]

Hello Brother Knights! Iwould like to thank all of the coun-cils that have turned in their formsto Supreme and the State. I have re-ceived some calls about certaincouncils not receiving anythingfrom the State or Supreme. Ichecked our directory and foundout this council had not turned intheir forms since 2001. How canwe mail something if we do nothave the current officers? Thisyear we are making a push to haveall councils report on all forms. Please do whatever you can to helpus in this matter. The forms thatSupreme ask us to fill out are im-portant. There is a reason for them.

I am going to announce at theState Family meeting in Decemberthat any council that has not turnedin the forms will not be able tohost any state event or functionuntil the forms are turned in to theState or Supreme. This means Areameetings or Major degrees to bescheduled.

There was an incident at thesoftball tournament this year thatneeds to be addressed. I do not seecanceling the softball tournamentsfor the child like act of a few mem-

bers so we are looking into thismatter and will report back to themembership when we have all ofthe facts.

Our Mental Disability Cam-paign is in full swing. Please helpthe ones less fortunate with yoursupport in the worthy project.

We have done several mem-bership campaigns across the statebut I think the most successful isthe one in New Orleans at St. MaryQueen of Vietnam. We signed upenough candidates to possiblystart a new council. Congratula-tions to Gerard Thomas and PaulGagnet for doing a great job on re-cruiting new members.

We are still with the leadersas far as membership goes. Westand to reveive a check for mem-bership at the end of this month ifwe keep it up. Our membershipteam is working very hard to recruitnew members with the Member-ship 365 campaign which is everycouncil to recruit one new mem-ber per month for the year.

Our new directory has beenmailed to the officers we have onrecord. Please read the rules of theuse of our directory. It is not to begiven to others who may copy it anduse the names and addresses to so-licit funds from our councils. It isnot to be used for political pruposesto solicit votes by candidates. Thedirectory is to be used for Knightsof Columbus purposes only!!!

By now you have heard bout andprobably saw the changes in the 3rd

Degree installation in our Order. If youhave not attended a meeting recently, please try to do so.

We are also being encouraged tofurther membership in the 4th Degree. Some say it is too expensive to buy theregalia. I would suggest you start sav-ing and join when you have saved upenough money for your outfit. Never-theless when you become a 4h Degree,do not forget to visit the 3rd Degreefrom time to time to help them. Yes, Iencourage you to become a 4th Degreemember when you can because it is ajoy to see about 40 or 50 men dressedin their regalia. It is a shame when wehave a showing at a church service ofonly 8 or 10 men.

I am so happy when I attend con-ventions to see our strong men take outtheir rosary and recite the prayers.

Msgr. Susi suffered a fallseveral weeks back

and has been in & outof the hospital.

Please keep Msgr. Susiin your prayers!

Community Service: A Council’sGuide to Getting Families Involved

It’s easy to feel disconnected, asmany parents juggle work, school, kids, and activity after activity. But somesimple things can bring a family closer -playing a game, going for a hike, orcooking a meal together. One of themost satisfying, fun, and productiveways to unite is volunteering for com-munity service projects. Volunteerismalso sets a good example for your kidsand helps the community.

Why should families in your coun-cil lend a helping hand?

It feels good. The satisfaction andpride that comes from helping others areimportant reasons to volunteer. Whenyou commit your time and effort to anorganization or a cause you feel stronglyabout, the feeling of fulfillment can beendless.

It strengthens your commu-nity. Organizations and agencies thatuse volunteers are providing importantservices at or no cost to those who needthem. When a community is doing wellas a whole, its individuals are better off, too.

It can strengthen yourcouncil’s families. Volunteerism is a

great way for families to have fun andfeel closer. But many people say theydon’t have the time to volunteer afterfulfilling work and family commitments. If that’s the case, try rethinking some ofyour free time as a family. You couldselect just one or two projects a yearand make them a family tradition (forexample, making and donating gift bas-kets to care facilities for the elderlyaround the holidays).

Councils, get your member’s fami-lies involved. The Internet offers lots ofsites with information about volunteeropportunities. Your council can form acommittee to meet with or call a favor-ite charity, hospital, or church directlyto see if they have any needs, or lookup “Volunteerism” in the phone book inthe Human Services section (often in theblue pages). Families can do many vol-unteer jobs. Even the smallest child(with adult supervision) can pick upgarbage at your local park, playground,

church or beach. You don’t even haveto be part of a big effort to do this.Councils, get your families together, findsome garbage bags, and head out.

Or become involved in repair andrenovation efforts for low-income resi-dents. Younger kids might not be ableto do the big jobs, but helping out byfetching a paintbrush or holding the nailsinvolves them just the same.

Work at a community food bankor soup kitchen as a family. Find an or-ganization that serves the elderly. Takethe food to people who are homeboundand visit with them. Your kids canbrighten a lonely senior’s day. Offeryour family’s help at the local animalshelter. Help plant flowers or trees. Thepossibilities are endless.

Whatever your council chooses todo, volunteering and community servicecan benefit both the community and yourcouncil’s membership families. Get yourcouncil’s families involved today!

Three months and December,Christmas will be with us. What a won-derful time of the year.

Time does not stand still. I am a believer that nothing in life

stays the same. We are surrounded bymany things that are different each dayand the differences require a great dealof transition on our part for assistingothers reach their goals. This means thatwe must find different ways to helpsince we find that so few things stay thesame. What worked for us yesterdaymight not work in the same situationtoday. Become familiar with our par-ish church needs by working closelywith our Pastors ( Councils and Assem-bly Chaplains).

First we’d like to review a fewthings before moving on to “new busi-ness”. We hate to be repetitive andwaste precious space in the LouisianaKnight, but certain things need to occurfor your Council to be successful in thePro-Life program area. The things wecontinue to emphasize are what we con-sider to be mandatory or critical tasks.Failing to accomplish these importanttasks will greatly hamper your ability toachieve the high standards which havebeen set in this program area.

We’ve requested that all GrandKnights do four things this year: One,appoint a functioning, capable Pro-LifeChair Couple. Two, complete the Pro-Life Chair Couple contact informationform and return it to us as soon as pos-sible. Three, invite your Pro-Life ChairCouple to attend KCLS each year &cover any costs they incur to attend.Four, work with your Pro-Life ChairCouple to expand & improve your Coun-cil Pro-Life activities.

This is a simple request, yet we stillhave many Councils that have apparentlynot completed these requested tasks. Please make an effort this year, or evennext year to place a higher priority onPro-Life activities and complete theaforementioned tasks.

October should once again be apretty popular month for Pro-Life BabyBottle Campaigns. If you want to spon-sor a campaign and you missed youropportunity to do so in October, pleasetry to sponsor a campaign in Novemberor December before we reach January2012. In January, the emphasis in mostCouncils shifts to publicly recognizingRoe v Wade. In that month, many Coun-cils sponsor or participate in Pro-LifeWalks & Marches, put up seas of whitecrosses in front of their churches, andparticipate in community prayer servicessuch as rosaries or in the “Life Chain”or “40 Days for Life” programs. Thosewishing to sponsor a baby bottle cam-paign should contact the Director of theirnearby pregnancy resource center.

As we approach the middle of ourfiscal year, now is a good time to reviewthe 2011 – 2012 Pro-Life Activity Re-port form. You should already have acopy, but if you do not, they are avail-able for download at the State KCwebsite. Grand Knights will also receiveanother copy at Grand Knights Day orin the mail in January. Please remem-ber that the grading period for our Stateends March 31, 2012, so we really havereached the half-way point in our fiscalyear.

We’re not sure if we will have theopportunity before January for anotherarticle in the Louisiana Knight, so we’d

    CYLA [email protected]

Welcome to this years CYLAprogram. I am looking forward to thisbeing the best year ever of the programand to assist each council in selectingtheir winners to be recognized locallyand competing at the Area level.

The Catholic Youth LeadershipAward Program is one of the most dy-namic and rewarding programs that theState Council offers to the Member-ship. CYLA places an emphasis onCatholic values, scholastic achievement, athletics, and leadership in the areas ofchurch, school and community. Catho-lic seniors throughout the state of Loui-siana are eligible to participate in theCYLA program. The only requirementis that they must be nominated by acouncil within the Louisiana jurisdiction. Each council that participates in theCYLA program will find it to be bothrewarding and fulfilling. Giving outstand-ing Catholic seniors the opportunity tocompete for cash prizes, awards, andrecognition is the very foundation of theCYLA program.

CYLA packets will be mailed outto the Grand Knight in early Novem-ber. Appeals are made on behalf ofCYLA at the state officers’ meeting andat Grand Knights’ day, encouragingcouncils to participate in the program.Councils that participate in the program

turn in their nomination forms to theArea Coordinators. Area Coordina-tors conduct their respective area com-petition and award one boy and one girlthe distinction of being an area winneras well as a state finalist. The AreaCoordinator then sends the nominationforms of the finalist to the state chair-man. A total of 24 finalists will com-pete for the state championship. October, month of the Holy Ro-sary, of the Blessed Mother, brings par-ticular blessings to all of us who will turnto her and ask for her intercession forour needs from Her Divine Son. AsKnights, we are particularly blessed inour efforts, with our families, and in ourindividual paths to holiness. As Knights, from our first day, we are gifted with aRosary, even as we are challenged towitness to Mary, to Her Son, and tothe Truth of our Christian heritage. Nowhere is this opportunity to know, love, and serve the Lord made clearer thanin the exhortations of our leaders re-cently returned from the annual conven-tion. Again, our Supreme Knight hascommitted us to service through Mary,Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Over the next several weeks, across Louisiana, there will be numer-ous witness opportunities to pray to OurBlessed Mother through the Silver RoseProgram. It seems to me that this is oneway, as Knights, we can avail ourselves,as united Knights, of prayer and our

own individual recommitments to serv-ing under the banner of our Lady ofGuadalupe, Patroness of the Americas, and bearer of the Light of Jesus, cre-ator and sanctifier of all life. Throughpraying the Rosary, as Knights andKnight families, we celebrated our ownlives, the lives of everyone, regardlessof our individual ways of origin, culturalindividualites, or status of life.

Our Supreme Knight, Carl Ander-son, recalled the visit of Blessed JohnPaul II to the Hill of Tepeyac, where in1531, Mary, Mother of the whole hu-man race, reached out, and shared avisionary moment into the splendor ofeternity. In this appearance to SaintJuan Diego, Our Blessed Mother wasreaching out to each of us who wouldhear and see the proof that there is aGod who loves each one of us, indi-vidually, whatever our station in life.Having been drawn to observe the ten-derness and caring of Our BlessedMother to all of us, we are challengedand obligated to witness to these truthsin prayer and in action.

As Mary’s appearance and JuanDiego’s response in faith drew thepoorest of the poor of Mexico to a lifeof hope, so through their example, weare all drawn, poor and rich, lowly andlofty in our status in the world, to wit-ness and to evangelize. Pope BenedictXVI, in Deus Caritas est, reminds usthat “the renewal of the Church inAmerica, will not be possible withoutthe active presence of the laity. [As la-ity, we are], therefore, largely respon-sible for the future of the Church.”Given this responsibility, and the gracesto work through opportunities for wit-nessing, evangelizing, we all need todevelop a strong prayer life, centeredon Christ and through the Rosary, eventslike the Silver Rose Program, and oth-

ers, we can be forces for good and trulybe making a difference. In this way wecan imitate our Blessed Mother in Herfiat and can emulate the obedience, infaith, of Saint Juan Diego. “Working, praying together, as Knights we cancome together as councils, as an Or-der, as a Church, as a community, andas a world in need of her words of peaceand unity,” (Carl Anderson, SupremeKnight, in “Mother of the Civilizationof Love). Vivat Jesus—per Mariam.

Brothers if your council does nothave a fund drive because they don’thave a Beneficiary in their District orArea always remember there is St.Mary’s Residential Training School inAlexandria as well as the Special Olym-pics in just about every State Parish.

Thank you for past participationand that of the future!

Having four visiting family mem-bers, my wife was very busy, so I of-fered to go to the store for her to getsome needed items, which included lightbulbs, paper towels, trash bags, deter-gent and clorox. So off I went.

I scurried around the store, gath-ered up my supply of goodies andheaded for the checkout counter, onlyto be blocked in the narrow aisle by ayoung man who appeared to be aboutsixteen-years-old. I wasn’t in a hurry,so I patiently waited for the boy to re-alize that I was there. This was whenhe waved his hands excitedly in the airand declared in a loud voice, “Mommy,I’m over here.

It was obvious now, he was men-tally challenged and also startled as heturned and saw me standing so close tohim, waiting to squeeze by. His eyeswidened and surprise exploded on hisface as I said, “Hey Buddy, what’s yourname?”

“My name is Denny and I’m shop-ping with my mother,” he respondedproudly. “Wow,” I said, “that’s a coolname; I wish my name was Denny, butmy name is Steve.” “Steve, likeStevarino?” he asked. “Yes,” I an-swered. “How old are you Denny?”How old am I now, Mommy?” heasked his mother as she slowly cameover from the next aisle.” You’re fifteen-years-old Denny; now be a good boyand let the man pass by.” I acknowl-

edged her and continued to talk toDenny for several more minutes aboutsummer, bicycles and school. I watchedhis brown eyes dance with excitement, because he was the center of someone’sattention. He then abruptly turned andheaded toward the toy section.

Denny’s mom had a puzzled lookon her face and thanked me for takingthe time to talk with her son .She toldme that most people wouldn’t even lookat him, much less talk to him.

I told her that it was my pleasureand then I said something I have no ideawhere it came from, other than by theprompting of the Holy Spirit. I said,“There are plenty of red, yellow, andpink roses in God’s Garden; however,‘Blue Roses’ are very rare and shouldbe appreciated for their beauty and dis-tinctiveness. You see, Denny is a BlueRose and if someone doesn’t stop andsmell that rose with their heart and touchthat rose with their kindness, thenthey’ve missed a blessing from God.”

She was silent for a second, thenwith a tear in her eye she asked, “Whoare you?” Without thinking I said, “Oh,I’m probably just a dandelion, but I surelove living in God’s garden.” Shereached out, squeezed my hand andsaid, “God bless you!” and then I hadtears in my eyes.

May I suggest, the next time yousee a BLUE ROSE, don’t turn yourhead and walk off. Take the time to smileand say Hello, Why? Because, by thegrace of GOD, this mother or fathercould be you. This could be your child, grandchild, niece or nephew. What adifference a moment can mean to thatperson or their family

From an old dandelion! Live sim-ply, Love generously, Care deeply,Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God.“People will forget what you said,People will forget what you did, butpeople will never forget how you madethem feel!”. “ANON”

In 2005 the BSA sent out lettersasking all government agencies to findalternate charter partners so money willnot be used in lawsuits that could beused for the Scouting programs. In thepilot for this new agreement with theKnights, one council decided to pickup the charters for 23 units in its area tokeep these units functioning.

In 2006, the Knights of Colum-bus and the National Catholic Commit-tee on Scouting teamed up to start newScouting units. Each Grand Knight,Faithful Navigator, and State and Dis-trict Deputy in the United States shouldhave received a recruitment packet in-cluding information on Scouting pro-grams and a DVD with a message fromSupreme Knight Carl Anderson with hissupport of the BSA programs.

Our next upcoming event will beour 2nd Annual Fishing Tournament heldat the Lamar Dixon Expo Center inGonzales, Louisiana on October 29,2011, and hosted by St. Amant SquiresCircle. This is a catch and release tour-nament as we fish along the banks of astocked pond. Squires bring their ownbait and we measure and weigh all fishcaught and give awards based on size, weight, and quantity caught by a Squire. This was a great activity last year andshould be as fun as it was last year. Wehope to see you there, please registeryour Squires for the fun.

Squires about Youth Ministries and howthey can serve the Church and ourClergy.

This year the Squires ServiceProject is one that is of great impor-tance to those in need in our Commu-nity. The mission of Ronald McDonaldHouse Charities (RMHC) is to create, find and support programs that directlyimprove the health and well being ofchildren. Their Vision: we believe thatwhen you change a child’s life, youchange a family’s, which can change acommunity, and ultimately the world.

How do we help? We are collect-ing pull tabs from soup cans, coke cans, and beer cans and turn that into cash. With your help we are collecting themuntil State KC Convention in May thatwill be in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in2012. Put the pull tabs in a Ziploc Gal-lon size bag and drop them off at ourSquires booth at Convention. We willthen continue to collect until our SquiresState Convention, the beginning of Juneand turn in the pull tabs and collectmoney given to us based on collections. Our Squires State Convention is in NewOrleans this year, where the localRonald McDonald House Chapter islocated. We will then give them a checkfor the amount collected at our Ban-quet on Saturday evening. What a greatway to teach and train our youth on theprinciples of Charity.

While we are on the subject ofNew Orleans, we are working withArchbishop Aymond on starting to

work to develop a Catholic Youth Min-istry Programs in New Orleans Area. After Katrina and Rita demolished thearea which is still trying to recover fromtheir loses, with the help of the Coun-cils and Assemblies in the Metro Areaof New Orleans, we can redevelopSquires Circles and help our Clergy tobring Catholic young men closer toGod. We can bring the Metro Areaback to the prestige of having the bestSquire Circles in the State. We can re-juvenate our Councils in New Orleanswith the youth of these young men whenthey turn 18 years of age. Are you withme Brother Knights? As we approach the fall time ofthe year, many of our State Youth Pro-grams should have already started orwill start in the very near future. 2011. This event will occur at theBurbank Soccer Complex in BatonRouge and the competition will beginat 9:30 am. Hopefully some of the hintsand suggestions I provided to the Coun-cils in the beginning of the fraternal yearhas helped and will continue to help yourCouncil in promoting this event in thefuture.

Many Councils may have alreadystarted with the Knights of ColumbusSubstance Abuse Poster Contest.,however there is still plenty time to com-plete this program before the Councildeadline of January 31, 2012. Thisprogram will help teach the youth ofchurch parishes and our communities ofthe dangers of substance abuse. Eventhough the rules state that the postersshould be completed on a 11x17 inchposter please do not let this serve asstumbling block to your council want-ing to participate in this program. If anyof the participants state that they arehaving problems locating this sizeposter, simply encourage participants tobuy a large poster and cut to be a 11x17inch poster. One of the obvious ad-vantages in doing the poster on this sizeposter is shipping the winning postersthat continue to advance to higher lev-els of competition.

Brother Knights, many times thesuccess of our programs is how we pro-mote our programs and how much timewe tried to put into planning our pro-grams. Within a few more monthsCouncils will start conducting theirCouncil Free Throw Contest. Coun-cils are encourage to utilize the promo-tional posters in your Free Throw Kitswell in advance to help boys and girlsbetween the ages of 10-14 become fa-miliar and interesting in wanting to par-

ticipate in the program. Consider dis-tributing flyers to boys and girls withinyouth groups, CCD programs andwithin local public and private schoolswith information about your CouncilFree Throw Contest well in advance. Some Councils try to encourageschools to conduct the program throughtheir PE classes.

Another of one outstanding youthprograms is the Catholic Youth Lead-ership Award program or better knownas the CYLA Program. EncourageCatholic Seniors in your church par-ishes to take an interest and participatein this program. There is a large finan-cial assistance given to our top threestate winners and who knows one ofthe lucky boy and girl winners might beone of the Seniors that your Councilsinspires to participate.

None of our State Youth Pro-grams can be successful without the fi-nancial assistance that Councils contrib-ute to the Youth Expansion Program. Our YEP Program is a very diversifiedthat helps many of youth throughout ourstate in many of ways and over the yearsmany of youth has touched by gener-osity that Councils and individuals con-tinue to donate to this program. Forthose councils that have given so gen-erous contribute to this program in thepast we thank you and ask you toplease continue to support the Yep Pro-gram. However we encourage allCouncils throughout our state to makeone of your Council goals andprosperities to support the YEP Pro-gram.

They are not showing weakness, but willbe blessed by our Blessed Mother.

Recently I had a letter from ourSupreme Chaplain, Bishop Lori, and onefrom Father Grace, Area Director ofChaplains. I was encouraged not to goto Rome, New Haven, and Denver forthe State Chaplains meetings because ofthe long trips. I was sorry I could notmake them, however. The Chaplain fromNew Orleans went in my place to Rome.My Assistant Chaplain from Shreveportwent to New Haven, and a Chaplainfrom Lafayette went to Denver. I gotvery little information about what tookplace.

Just recently my Bishop from heretook me to the meeting of the Order ofthe Fleur de Lis in Birmingham. I didokay on that trip.

My point is, I want to continue togo to these meetings if I can have some-one to drive me. Father Grace wrotewondering what was wrong. He got very

little reports from Louisiana. He tells usthe time is ripe for our Chaplains, as thereis a serious need within the Church andamong our Brothers and their familiesfor more spiritual growth.

Our Supreme Knight Carl A.Anderson wants to move the Chaplainsreport from #13 to #7 on the agenda forevery Council meeting, and said that theChaplains’ report (now message) shouldcome early in a meeting. The Chaplainneeds to be accommodated in this sched-ule. Father Grace lists in his brochurethe “Supreme Chaplain’s 10 Keys toSuccess as a Chaplain”. It will be arriv-ing at every Council as part of the “Surgewith Service” kit. Please let me knowof any Chaplain that has not receivedone.

And I ask all Council Chaplains toplease try to follow directives of ourSupreme Chaplain and Supreme Direc-tor and begin to give 10 or 15 minutes toBishop Lori’s “Cathechism of the Catho-lic Church” at every meeting.

    God bless you all,Vivat Jesus
