Instructor Preparation

Title of Module: Framing and Internalizing My Values

Instructor:

The intent of this module is to provide a forum for discussion about values. Values are principles that are the foundational elements of an individual. Everyone has values, but an individual’s values may be very different from others. Values constantly evolve; some have been a part of one’s life for such a long time that it is difficult to identify them specifically.

Core values shape students’ culture and define the character of their being. Core values also define the foundation of businesses and the character of the work that they do. These factors should be recognized as students, future braille transcribers, and contractors for various work/services.

Curriculum Content

A. Introduction of Values and Beliefs (45 minutes)

Objective SS2.1: Explore personal, work, and people values.

PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES

Instructor:

Each of us has beliefs and values that assist and guide us when we are making

decisions and choices.

CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION

On the tables (or pinned to the bulletin board) students will find cards with various

values listed. Have students think about those things that are most important to them

and collect ten to twenty cards that you believe speak to your core values and beliefs.

Students collect cards and take them back to their desk/table.

Students should review their choices to make sure they are satisfied with what they

have selected (they can exchange or add anything they think is missing).

B. Identification of Types of Values (45 minutes)

Objective SS2.2: Identify specific value preferences and desires and take action based

on identified values.

PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES

Instructor:

There are three types of values:

Personal, work, and people

CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION

Hand out a set of cards (personal, work and people) to each student.

Objective SS2.2: Identify specific value preferences and desires and take action based

on identified values.

D. Understanding My Core Values and Beliefs (30 minutes)

Objective SS2.3: Understand more about values and prioritizing things that are most

important, especially in a work environment.

PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES

Instructor:

In teams of three, have students look at their most important values and beliefs in the

work category.

CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION

Present questions for the teams to discuss such as:

What have you learned about yourself and your values/beliefs?

How will these influence choices and decisions about the work you do?

What are some of the values you believe most employers hold?

What appears to be most important as you begin to work as a braille transcriber

contractor?

E. Additional Activities (as needed)

FOLLOW-THROUGH ACTIVITIES

The two following activities can be inserted as needed. They relate to continued exploration and identification of preferences related to personal, work, and people values. These activities will also promote a level of reflection and thinking in gaining a greater understanding about core values and the things that are most important, especially in a work environment.

Activity #1

Have students write down three things/activities they do regularly or that they enjoy

doing. Have them write down what about each one they enjoy and why they enjoy it.

Then students should identify the values each thing/activity reflects.
