Hello fellow RMD Members. I hope this version of our division newsletter finds you busy and your business prosperous. Over the last few months your board has been very busy and energized in reviewing how we are doing against our mission and strategizing how to be better. These discussions have been quite fruitful and energetic to say the least. Lots of suggestions, opinions and facts were shared. These are being distilled down and focused in order to create efficient action plans utilizing the resources we have at hand. I am sharing the mission with you below for your review as well. I will bet you know the spirit of the mission, but not the exact wording. It is always good to review this and keep perspective. RMD's Mission: Promote the Scientific and Engineering Knowledge of Plastics by: • Providing a forum for SPE members to exchange information and become informed about

rotational molding. • Cooperating with and encouraging universities to teach and conduct research relating to rotational molding. • Building membership in a field new to SPE. Celine Bellehumeur, our ANTEC Chair, put together a half-day session dedicated to Rotational Molding on Wednes-day April 24th, in the AM, at ANTEC. There will be another rotomolding half-day technical session at the 2013 Inter-national Polyolefins Conference, in Houston, on Tuesday February 26th in the AM. These two events are keeping Celine and the technical programs committee very busy delivering three technical RMD events in a 12 month period. The newsletter is a great venue for you to share technical information with your peers. If you can’t share, but need information, you can ask a board member to add a topic that is timely for you to the newsletter. You can also ask your supplier to submit on a topic of interest, as many good technical papers are already written and are sitting in an archive file somewhere. Chances are if you are interested in a topic there are others that will find it at least interest-ing and/or useful. If you have not done so already, check out the SPE RMD and Plastics Rotational Molding Profes-sionals groups on linkedin for industry related discussions, technical inquiries and networking opportunities. Laboratory Ovens Usefulness of Lab Ovens Laboratory ovens are useful in the plastics industry and other industries for re-search, quality control and product development. Some common uses and tests are:

Moisture content determination of most materials Gel time of Plastisols Cure time for Plastisols Cure a variety of materials Check color consistency and heat stability at processing temperatures Powdered additive stabilities can be determined at processing temperatures Powdered additive weight loss can be determined at processing temperatures

Lab Oven Quality It is recommended to purchase a quality oven with a stainless steel interior and digital temperature controller. A built in timer is a plus and very handy. For most applications a forced air oven is best, as the inside temperature is maintained more uniformly than a convection oven. Be sure the oven you purchase has enough wattage to reach and maintain your desired temperatures. It must recover to the set point quickly after the door is opened and closed. For safety, make sure your oven is insulated properly so the exterior remains cool to the touch and en-ergy consumption is minimized.

There is an increasing demand for the ASTM 1895 Method B Funnel and Bulk Density Cup. This Method B Kit is ideal to test the Pourability and the Bulk Density of pellets while the Method A kit is useful to test the Poura-bility and Bulk Density of powders. The new ARM3-5.3 10 mm Funnel Kit is a modification of the ASTM Method A Funnel Kit designed to more accurately test rotomold-ing PE powders for Flowability. Below is a picture show-ing the size difference of the ASTM 1895 Method A (front) and Method B (rear) Funnels and Bulk Density Cups produced in aluminum. Since plastic pellets are more abrasive than powder, the Method B Funnels and Cups are also available in Hard Coat aluminum and Stainless Steel. General Plastics Class at Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, KS -

This week in general plastics the focus was on rotational molding. Did some rotational molding in the lab using the machine and making four parts at one time on the arms. Took a tour of a local company that manufactures slides for playground equipment. Their machine can handle up to 4 molds at one time at a maximum length of 17 feet. The ma-chine is huge and uses a "rock and roll" technique. The students get the theory in lecture, practice in the lab, and then see an example of the process in industry. From Rebeca Book

Pennsylvania College of Technology's PIRC to Offer Global Standards for Plastics Certification SpecialChem - Mar 11, 2013

Pennsylvania College of Technology's Plastics Innovation & Resource Center has entered a three-point partnership to become the sole North American distributor of the Global Standards for Plastics Certification (GSPC). The Global Standards for Plastics Certification is the only recognized method of apprenticeship certification in the world for the plastics industry. It provides universal recognition of plastics workers' knowledge and capabilities, as well as demonstrated economic benefits to companies. The certification process combines comprehensive, face-to-face instruction; interactive training; process simulation; and focused, on-the-job exercises for employees at their facilities. Training is customized to include modules specific to a company's procedures and operations. The PIRC has partnered with Polymer Training and Innovation Center at the City of Wolverhampton College in the United Kingdom. The City of Wolverhampton College is the new global center for administration and control of the GSPC. "Our second partner is Paulson Training Programs, headquartered in Chester, Conn., which provides training software, manuals and other materials required to facilitate the training process," said Hank White, Director of the PIRC. Paulson Training Programs provides a broad range of in-plant interactive courses, worldwide e-learning solutions and expert-led seminars to help injection molders, extrusion companies, blow molders, thermoformers, part designers and many other plastics professionals in the industry grow and compete on a global scale, using high-quality training solutions while utilizing the latest technology. In its role, the Plastics Innovation & Resource Center will handle all administrative activities required to support the training for North American companies and to ensure that qualified employees receive GSPC certification. The PIRC will provide train-the-trainer workshops to key leaders at participating companies, provide verification services for ready candidates, and track the results of training by conducting pre- and post-training assessments. Originally developed in the United Kingdom as an apprenticeship qualification, GSPC has evolved to become the most rigorous and comprehensive certification system available to the plastics industry. The program was brought from Europe, where it has been used by more than 500 companies, to Indiana, where 30 companies participated. Pennsylvania became the second state to use the GSPC when the PIRC piloted the program five years ago. Since then, 20 Pennsylvania companies have participated. The program has also shown many tangible results for measurements such as improved production capabilities and increased quality, as well as a decreased scrap rate and fewer customer complaints. In addition to GSPC training and verification, services offered by the PIRC include project and process development, materials analysis, computer-aided design and technical support. Training is offered on company sites and on campus, where participants have access to modern equipment valued at more than $2 million. "We are very glad that Pennsylvania College of Technology continues to support the GSPC Verifications for our employees," said Dana Musser, of East Penn Manufacturing. "The program has become interwoven in our training program and ensures that each new employee has a standard and complete knowledge base."

Dr. Paul Nugent is a native of Northern Ireland now living in Pennsylvania. He was educated at The Queen’s University of Belfast in Northern Ireland; he holds a Master’s of Engineering Degree in aeronautical engineering and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering. The subject of his Ph.D. work covered heat transfer and

process variables in rotational molding. The course of his research developed the world’s first process control system for rotational molding (Rotolog) and also the first complete computer simulation (RotoSim). After five years managing the Rotational Moulding Research Centre at Queen’s University, he moved from the academic field into a management position in a rotational molding company in the United States where for six years he was responsible for production, engineering, and quality control. In 2001, he left to write a book on rotational molding entitled Rotational Molding: A Practical Guide and has since offered his services in training and consulting to the industry on a worldwide basis. This enables him to travel extensively across six continents assisting clients in many roles from teaching to expert witness and from process troubleshooting to the streamlining of manufacturing operations.

The PIRC operates in a state-of-the-art facility with industrial scale plastics processing and analytical equipment on the Penn College campus.

The SPE Rotomolding Division is comprised of a prestigious group of scientists, engineers, educators, and professionals who continually advise the industry.

Pennsylvania College of TeChnology established the Rotational Molding “Center of Excellence” in 2000 as a technical resource offering independent, hands-on, applied research and development to the North American rotomolding community.

Penn College’s Plastics Innovation & Resource Center partners with the Association of Rotational Molders (ARM) and Society of Plastics Engineers Rotational Molding Division (SPE RM) to bring you this exceptional workshop. The workshop is designed to give participants practical experience in combination with classroom training on higher-level technology in rotational molding.

The two-day workshop focuses on the connection between material preparation, molding parameters, and final part quality. It also allows attendees to network and share experiences with others facing similar day-to-day issues.

Instruction and labs are held in the Breuder Advanced Technology & Health Sciences Center (ATHS). In addition, the afternoon session on day one of the workshop will be spent at New Berlin Plastics, where the class will spend half the session in lecture and half in a workshop in a production environment.

Penn College is located in central Pennsylvania with easy access off Interstate 180, Maynard Street Exit 23. The Williamsport Regional Airport (IPT) provides commuter air service through Philadelphia. Free shuttle service is provided to and from the Williamsport Regional Airport and College from our preferred hotels, so a car rental is not necessary. Other airport options within two-hours driving distance include Harrisburg International (MDT) and State College (SCE), in which case you would need to rent a car.

Hotel Reservations: The registration fee does not include hotel accommodations. Participants are responsible for making their own lodging arrangements. Seminar Overview This unique seminar will begin with the fundamentals of the process with examples of new, exciting and award winning rotationally moulded parts from around the world. It will also include an in-depth study on the anatomy of the rotational moulding cycle, heating and cooling mechanisms, as well as the science behind the formation and removal of bubbles and pinholes. The diverse range of rotomoulding machinery and moulds currently available to the industry will also be illustrated. The following session will move onto Rotational Moulding - Influences over the Process, which will determine the effects on mechanical properties of different colour blending methods, as well as the mechanisms and control of shrinkage and warpage. The three workshops, delivered through a series of hands-on demonstrations and classroom presentations, will cover the areas of rotational moulding foaming methods, In-mould pressurisation, powder grinding / quality, advanced in-mould cooling techniques, process monitoring, new materials and future development trends for the industry. Three rotomoulding industry leaders will assist in the delivery of the workshops. Mark Kearns is Rotational Moulding Research Manager of the Polymer Processing Research Centre (PPRC) at Queen’s University, Belfast, N. Ireland. A Chartered Chemical Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, he has a Masters Degree in Rotational Moulding and has been involved in rotational moulding research and industrial support projects since the early 1990’s. Following an initial two years as Deputy Production Manager in a UK rotomoulding factory, Mark has spent over 15 years at Queen’s managing rotational moulding research projects for companies across Europe, Asia and North America. He has co-authored two books

and over 60 papers & conference proceedings and lectures extensively worldwide. Mark has presented advanced seminars and keynote presentations on rotational moulding technology in Europe, South Africa, Australasia, Central & South America and the United States.

Dr. Mark Mc Court holds a BSc.(Hons) in Chemistry, an MSc. in Polymer Science & Engineering and a PhD in Polymer Science all from Queens University, Belfast, N. Ireland. He is currently a Rotational Moulding Process Engineer at Queen’s University. Mark has been involved in commercial rotational moulding research and development projects for almost 15 years at Queens, carrying out R&D projects for small, medium and multinational companies across the island of Ireland, UK, Europe, Asia and North America. Dr Paul Hanna is a process engineer in the Polymer Processing Research Centre (PPRC) at Queen’s University Belfast, N. Ireland. He holds a Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering, Masters Degree in Polymer Engineering and a PhD in Rotational Moulding from Queen’s University Belfast. He has worked on Rotational Moulding research and development projects for companies across Europe, North America and Australasia for more than 13 years.
