You have to rotate the globe to see the continents,
oceans, seas, countries, cities, and many other places.
World maps represent the Earth as a whole. They show the whole surface
of our planet at one time. The shape of the continents and oceans
becomes distorted mainly near the poles.

The six continents are the six main land areas on the Earth. Some are joined to
each other, and some are completely surrounded by water. Some continents
have a lot of countries, but others have only a few. The continents are America,
Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and Antarctica.
An ocean is a huge body of salt water. Oceans cover almost 70% of Earth's
surface. There are four main oceans on Earth: the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic
Ocean, the Indian Ocean, and the Arctic Ocean.

Sunrays and the Earth
Lets talk!
Whats the weather like today?
What was the weather like yesterday?
What will the weather be like tomorrow?
What kind of climate is there in the Northern Zone of Chile?
What kind of climate is there in the Southern Zone?
What kind of climate is there in the Central Zone?
Lets read!
What is the difference between weather and climate?
Weather is the condition of the atmosphere at a particular place and time. It is the
combination of temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind and other elements.
Weather can change from hour to hour, day to day, for example one day it can
be dry and sunny and the next day it may rain.
Climate refers to the average weather conditions in a place over many years
(usually 30 years or more). For example the climate in the Bo-Bo Region is
temperate and in Antofagasta it is hot and dry.
While the weather can change from hour to hour, climate takes hundreds,
thousands, even millions of years to change.

What does the climate of a region depend on?
The climate of a region depends on the sunlight it receives and other factors, too.
slant: inclined line or direction.
Why are there different climates on Earth?
Because light and heat from the Sun reach the
planet directly or at different angles.
This part of Earth receives direct sunlight.
These parts of Earth receive sunlight at a slant.

Characteristics of each climate zone
Tropical Zone
The tropical zone is located close to the Equator between the Tropic of Cancer in
the Northern Hemisphere and the Tropic of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere.
The Suns rays strike this area at a right angle, the temperature is high all year long
and the seasons are all very similar. In some places, it rains a lot, it is very humid all
the time and we can find jungles. In other places, there is no rain, and we can find
deserts.
People usually wear light clothes and sandals. Most activities take place outdoors.
People can enjoy a variety of water sports, because the ocean water is warm.
Imagine houses in this zone. Draw a picture in your notebook.
Temperate Zone
The Northern Temperate zone is located between the Tropic of Cancer and the
Arctic Circle and the Southern Temperate zone is located between the Tropic of
Capricorn and the Antarctic Circle. The Suns rays strike this area at a slight angle
so the temperature is moderate, higher in summer and lower in winter.
In this zone there are four distinct seasons: spring, summer, fall and winter. There is a
wide variety of forests, bushes, and animals because of the abundant rainfall and
mild temperatures. In the summer, days are long and hot and in winter days are
short, cold, and rainy.
Polar Zone
The Polar zones are located inside the polar circles. The polar zones receive
indirect sunlight so temperatures are always very low, usually below 0, and the
ground is covered by ice. The polar zones have two seasons: winter and summer.
Vegetation is scarce and living conditions are very difficult.
