We model everything daily on the computer and big screen!!!!! Everything!!!Students guide me step by step, all thirty tell me in unison

what to click on step by stepHw weblog which your son/daughter checks out nightly, first

thing, as soon as your son/daughter get home!!!!They will do the same when we start into Greece and cover the

20% of the material that we will cover from PGreece1213.docx on Chittock’s World They will lead me in role modeling what hyperlinkThey will lead me in role modeling what control f searchSssssooo, they can do it by him/her self at home IF need be!!!!

When we kick into New Core Curriculum Research in the next couple of weeks, we role model librarian Mrs. Burkey’s Website---step by step

Taking Notes—the heart and soul of every social studies course!! {no kids don’t take all 100+ pages of notes—we cover

about 20% of that material in class, especially the red lettered questions!! The rest is there for student research purposes and to compare

his/her own note taking to mine on a nightly basis IF need be, IF he/she is struggling or if he/she just wants to compare his/her own note taking to mine

We will work on taking notes in traditional indented outline format-the “MLA outline format” (I A 1 a i)

Students can do this POD on a googledoc template they rename and submit to schoology daily ooooorrr they can do it OS with Ink and hand written notes

How to navigate Team 701 (again role

modeled every day in class!!)

• Again, entire class is leading me as I role model how to navigate sssssoooo your son/daughter can easily show you even tonight!!!!

+lms main page+staff directory+team 701+”Chittock’s World” (my website) is there+also chittock hw weblog is there+library media center website by mrs. Burkey is used when we kick into Research ---check it out, all kinds of world class stuff there. Ohio is about the # 1 state for seven years in a row when it comes to quality/ethical electronic databases! (passwords are on burkey’s SCHOOLOGY page and on my SCHOOLOGY page as well!!)

How to navigate Team 701 (again role modeled every day in class!!)

• Chittock’s World—check it out from the lms webpage, have your son/daughter take you to and through it!!! ( will list the things we checked out right below, but have son/daughter go to it with you to see/navigate it as an entire family if you wish!!)• +classrrom notes 1 and 2 --the main research tool IF he/she

decides to use it• +Click on the Greece hyperlink, it will take you to a document

titled “pgreece1415”--The hyperlinks there on the first couple of pages will take you to the main topics no matter what page the coverage is located—ALSO, students know to use the old control F search----type correctly—see all the different places where a control f search of Socrates will take you for instance

• +we only cover in class an average of 20% of the material for a given unit, and I will colorize it in a colorized/bold/italic font and spell out on each unit the colored font on which your son/daughter should focus

• + Personally owned electronic device users??? • ++students click on the hyperlink for that unit’s notes from

schoology• ++they rename it and can now do all his/her note taking on

this googledoc on his/her POD

Pre-Tests and Accelerated Curriculum (Enrichment)

We start the first few units with a pre-test Students will have the opportunity to take a non-graded pre-test for many units They read 50 pages from text for 2-3 days then take a fifty question test Those student who score above an 85% will have the opportunity to do an

enrichment assignment/activity (the experts were actually right on this 85%, baker and I tried various standards these last five years and 85% is the magical number!! 85% based on reading/comprehension—taking notes did not improve performance on the pre-test!!??

They will be required to do enrichment assignments/activities unless you do not want them to do so—just email me. Detailed directions to all the options are located on Chittock’s World

They will often be comparing and contrasting the ancient civilization we are studying with the current one as well as other contemporary civilizations(Example: the accelerated students in this first Govt. unit are doing some reading/answering focus questions regarding Syria or Israel or Iraq or Russia-Ukraine---current events in relation to govt. types/rights/responsibilities/participation/etc.—most in broader context of the Arab Spring Movement across N. Africa and the Middle East—will lay a groundwork for our classical Islamic/Africa units later in the year

Page 8: Social Studies Materials needed every day Folder/notebook– Students will have a pocket folder with prongs Students will keep everything in the folder

Vocabulary Students will be given a set of vocabulary for every unit

(we are currently working on two sets, have your son/daughter show it to you)

Learning these words will help greatly in their study of the unit we are studying as well as current events

There will be a vocabulary memorization test for each unitIf they memorize memorize the average is an A-/B+. If

they don’t spend 2-3 evenings memorizing??=F average these last ten years!!!

There will be no retakes for vocabulary tests—what you earn is what you get (old school still exists especially K.S.U. and B.G.S.U. as my 27 and 23 year olds have discovered!!).

Page 9: Social Studies Materials needed every day Folder/notebook– Students will have a pocket folder with prongs Students will keep everything in the folder

Summative TestsSummative tests will occur at the end of a unitThey will consist of 25-50 multiple choice questions–not

simple recall but H.D.B.(higher/deeper/broader) questions and choices requiring higher order thinking skills

We will analyze the question/choices and thinking within one day so students see the “H.D.B.” (higher/deeper/broader) reasoning process required for each question and choice

If the grade on is a D or F, they will do a test analysis on three of the I can statements—requiring research and paragraph writing

If they have trouble on some of the concepts in a particular unit, those concepts will be covered/wrestled with in future units, a spiraling curriculum in effect!!

Page 10: Social Studies Materials needed every day Folder/notebook– Students will have a pocket folder with prongs Students will keep everything in the folder

Grading/PowerschoolGrades will come from vocabulary tests , summative tests, research,

and an occasional notebook grade.Everything will be on powerschool. Non-graded formative

assignments (pre-tests, checkpoints, etc.) do show up as a grade, in green font, but these will not count toward their point total.

I will also have a detailed description of each assignment on powerschool so be sure to click on the description and see what your son/daughter can show to you and explain if they have either a good or bad grade.

You may have access to powerschool from last year…check your son or daughters current grades as often as necessary

You can also have him/her show you his her powerschool if yours is not working

ALSO, have your son/daughter show you all the work he/she put into the preparation and have him/her explain any bad grade {or good grades} as well!!!)

Googledocs and schoology (used ONLY through “myolsd”

We will be modeling this every day in class on the big screen/projector when we start using it with Common Core Curriculum

Your son/daughter will be able to show you all his/her work and my formative and graded summative feedback along the research trail!!

Page 12: Social Studies Materials needed every day Folder/notebook– Students will have a pocket folder with prongs Students will keep everything in the folder

New National Core Curriculum Bottom line---much reading/writing/research as per the new national core curriculum

—I call it the “new/old 3 r’s (research/reading/righting—spelled with r’s on purpose!!) I call it the clenched fist of common core/college career readiness. Have your

son/daughter show it to you!!!! (read/understand/annotate/write/cite) See this hyperlink pages 59-66 (plus I have the standards copied/pasted to my I can

statements from the “I can statements” hyperlink on chittock’s world) http://www.corestandards.org/assets/CCSSI_ELA%20Standards.pdf

Baker and I both started implementing this curriculum the last three years with much insight from Literacy Support Mrs. Bischoff and Gifted Coordinator Mrs. Switzer. It went very very well!!

Much of this work will be posted to schoology, students not using a personally owned electronic device will be doing more handwritten notes/papers so do ask to see the hard copies in his/her possession. All final papers will be typed and submitted to schoology

All students, POD and OS, will have written comments along the right side of the schoology assignment , typed by myself or your son/daughter, as we conference numerous times during the course of a unit!!

See this website, I copied/pasted the appropriate goals/indicators to my I cans located on Chittock’s World
