About Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi

Jawaharlal Nehrll University has the vision and ideas since 1969. In the Indian academic landscape the university hascreated a grand place. The very Nehrllvian objectives embedded in the founding of the Unil'ersity, national integration,social justice, secularism, the democratic way of life, international understanding and scientific approach to the prob­lems of society had built into it constant and energetic endeavour to renew knowledge through self-questioning.

The JNU campus is a microcosm of the Indian nation, drawing students from every nook and corner of the country lindfrom every group and stratum of society. To make sure that this is so, annllal admission tests are simultaneously held at37 centres spread across the length and breadth of the country, and special care is taken to draw students from the un­derpril'ileged castes and ethical groups by reserving 22.5 per cent of seats for them. Overseas students form some 10 per­cent of the annual intake. Students' hostels and blocks of faculty residences are interspersed witll one another, underlin­ing the I,i ion of a large Indian faillily.

The Central Library is knowledge hub of Jawaharlal Nehru University, It provides comprehensive access to books, jour­/Ials, theses and dissertations, reports, surveys covering diverse disciplines. Established in 1969, it incorporates the li­brary of the prestigious Indian School of International Studies which was later merged with Jawaharlal ehru Univer­sity. The J U Library is a depository of all Govt. publications and publications of some important International Organi­zations like WHO, European Union, United Nations and its allied agencies etc. Jawaharlal ehru Universit) Campus,

ew Delhi. The ine Storey Library building is surrounded by lush, glossy green trees on the natural landscape of Arava­li Hills. It is the tallest tower of the Campus.

Workshop for Visually Impaired M. Phil./Ph. D./PDF Scholars

The Central Library, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Nell' Delhi has been endeavoring to provide information servit'es toits academic comlllunity at its best. To serve the Visually Impaired (VI) students and support them in the academic pro­grams, the Central Library has created and maintained infrastructure keeping their requirement in planning and imple­mentation. J U is working to achieve its objective of creating a barrier free campus for per 0/1 with I'ariou disabili­ties. The library has specifically a separate unit for VI students named 'Hellen Keller Unit.

At prese/lt in the library, the Helen Keller Unit has 20 computers, 20 scanllers, 2 Braille Printers, and other equipmentfor people with visual disabilities. Software such as JA WS, Kurzweil and other assistive tecJlllologies (software) supportthe reading, writing and learning for visually challenged researchers/ students by converting print or electronic text tospeech. At present, these facilities are availed of by around 70 visually impaired researchers/stude"ts (B.A., M.A.,M.Phil. & Ph.D.) of various disciplines enrolled ill the University. The Helen Keller Unit of Central Library, JUhasalso exte"ded its services to all Schools and Centres of the U"iversity. The library also provides Digital Voice Record­ers & CD-ROMs to visually challenged researchers/stude"ts for their research use. To provide informatio" and gil'e as­sistance to all visually impaired students, the Central Library is continuously organizing orientatio"s and learning pro­grammes. Tllis helps researchers and students stay abreast with the latest developments i/I their field. The basic aimof the Central Library, J U is to reach out to all the researchers/students with disabilities wherever they are and toprovide them the best technological support ill achieving their set goals. The present system, facilities and "ew addi­tions to the system and services at the Helen Keller Unit of Central Library, J Uand other nell' facilities will be provid­ed to I'isually impaired Faculty of the University.

To induce more confidence for the research Ivork, howing research methodologies a"d techniques ill the visually im­paired M. PhiI.lPh.D.lPDF Scholars, the workshop has goal to provide edllcatio" related with research. The designingof workshop includes the topics, concepts a"d methods which will enrich the knowledge of participants. To educateabout the theoretical tools, tecilllicalmethods aud "ewer developments in tools and techniques, a systematic scheduleis planned. Since the VI M. PhiI.lPh.D.lPDF Scholars require teaching methods other than routi"e methods, so theworkshop will be different. The participants will also find other suitable topics such as plagiarism avoidance as wellas detectio", use of reference management tools etc.
