$ntibiotic resistance.
Genetic engineering often uses genes for antibiotic resistance as "selectable markers,"
and most genetically engineered foods carry fully functioning antibiotic resistance genes.
According to the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), eating these foods could reduce
the effectiveness of antibiotics to fight disease.

As %ith other genetically modified foods, the long'term effects of ingesting r*G+ milk
are unkno%n. Studies have sho%n that co%s treated %ith r*G+ !roduce more lo%'
uality, decreased !rotein milk. Also, r*G+ milk contains more bacteria and conseuently
can go sour faster. -he A maintains that there is no significant difference bet%een thecontent of regular and r*G+'induced milk.
+ormone in/ections can be detrimental to the co%s, as %ell. Co%s treated %ith r*G+
have higher rates of udder infections, %hich lead to cystic ovaries and uterine and
digestive disorders. -hese conditions reduce !regnancy rates and increase the need for
antibiotics. Scientists are e!ressing concerns that the increasing use of antibiotics in
food animals %ill reduce the effectiveness of human antibiotics.

Cornell University recently conducted !eer'revie%ed lab studies %here monarch
butterflies %ere stunted and killed by eating !ollen from genetically modified corn.
0onarchs do not fed on corn but if the !ollen from *t corn lands on milk%eed '' a

genetic scientists have been presenting the complex process of genetic
modication to the public as a simple operation. They have been
erroneously giving the impression that "...one gene controls one
character trait, and transferring the gene results in the transfer of the
corresponding trait to the genetically modied organism, which can
then pass it on indenitely to future generations" (6). owever, the
process of genetic modication is random and can cause damage in
normal genes when imperfections in the genetic code of one organism
are un!nowingly passed to the receiving organism ()
Genetically modifed oods" is most commonly used to reer to crop plants
created or human or animal consumption, which have been modifed in the
laboratory to enhance desired traits or improved nutritional content (12). Geneticengineering is the process o artifcially modiying genes by cutting and splicing
! (deo#yribonucleic acid). Genes, the blueprints o lie, are made up o
se$uences o !, and they determine an organism%s growth and si&e, as well as
other characteristics ('). Genetic engineering is usually done in an eort to
replicate characteristics in the organism receiving the gene transer (') and
enables genetic engineers to transer genes between species()
*he creation o new allergens or to#ins is one o many possible negative impacts
that have been addressed currently. +or e#ample, scientists have discovered that
acillus thuringiensis (t), a bacterium that has been spliced into millions oacres o corn, potatoes and cotton, may produce allergies in people (11).

People frequently complain about not wanting the foods on their plates. Many starve
themselves just to lose weight. Many waste their food just because they dont care. Its all
because they havent experienced the real world. Thousands of innocent and helpless people
die because of famine. They starve to death. nd to solve this issue !enetically"engineered"
foods are being created. To increase food production is one of the main purpose of these
modified foods.
ccording to the college of #ryn Mawr$ The terms genetically-modified (GM) or
genetically-engineered (GE) foods and genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) refer to crop
plants created for human or animal consumption using the latest molecular biology
techniques. Genetically modified food techniques of modern genetics have made possible
the direct manipulation of the genetic maeup of organisms. !t is created and being altered
to help manind. To mae something that "ould benefit to the "orld.
#nd "ith these enters our discussion. $hat%s the point of generating these modified
foods if the problem is even worsened% if the effects are worsened then the term &helping' is
not appropriate. They are merely ma(ing a more severe problem right here.
