We are blessed with a number of members who remember the previous synagogue in Abbey Road and, together their families, have continued their association with our community. We are fortunate, also, to have been able to take with us the beautiful stained-glass windows, created by artist David Hillman, to enhance this building and additional windows were commissioned from him so that the entire synagogue sanctuary is graced by his work. Many individuals contributed to the sponsorship of the windows and the names of their loved ones are memorialized in the dedications. Windows are a classic feature of the architecture of a Jewish place of worship. A well known custom is to have twelve windows in a synagogue, corresponding to the twelve tribes of Israel. At St John’s Wood synagogue we have no less than one hundred and sixty lavishly illustrated windows! A stained-glass window offers an advantage over a clear glass window in two ways. A person standing by an ordinary window may be distracted from his or her prayer by the view of what is taking place outside. Alternatively, the angle of reflection may be that, at times, a person may be gazing at his or her own image which is not appropriate at a time of prayer. Indeed the eighteenth century rabbinical authority, Rabbi Moshe Sofer, preferred that Synagogue windows should be above the line of vision. Our magnificent stained-glass windows avoid these concerns. They provide a rich source of inspiration weaving together biblical and midrashic references and artistic imagination around the themes of the cycle of the Jewish year and the rhythm of Jewish life. Yet the other aspects of a window should not be ignored. Whilst we have a great deal to admire and celebrate in our beautiful synagogue we also need to see outside and recognise where we are in relation to the community and society round and about us. St John’s Wood in 2014 is not the same as it was when we moved here in 1964, and certainly not as it was in 1876 when this synagogue was founded. And that means holding up a glass to ourselves, not of self-admiration, but of appraisal and reflection that we equip ourselves and our community with the best possible resources as we move forward to the next phase in our community’s history. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: A WINDOW ON ST JOHN’S WOOD SYNAGOGUE The celebration this Shabbat of fifty years of this congregation in our current building in Grove End Road is a milestone in the life of our community.

Additionally, under our premises licence, children under 18 should not be allowed to drink alcohol. The Honorary Officers accept no liability for injury or damage caused by unsupervised children.

SEATS Over the course of the next few weeks, the Synagogue will be emptying unallocated seats in the main synagogue to retrieve tallaisim, siddurim and chumoshim and any other items which are shul property so that the boxes can be cleaned of rubbish and stock can be replenished for regulars and visitors to use. If you regularly sit in a seat which is not allocated to you, we ask you to please see that any personal property is removed from these seat boxes. Should you wish to take an allocated seat to store your items, please contact the synagogue office which will be happy to discuss availability of vacant seats. We will not be emptying seats which are assigned to members but ask that seat holders return any unused or excess items to the bookcases and clear any rubbish from their boxes.
