Your Playground Challenge can kick-off anytime

between now and the end of June!

This summer term, you will be joining thousands of schools across the UK to take on the Soccer Aid for Unicef Playground Challenge – and we’ll be getting ready to go head-to-head in the Soccer Aid for Unicef football match on 16 June!

It’s time for all of us to get ready for kick-off. So get your school together, design your challenge (you can see our attempt on page 8!) and show off those fundraising skills.

The money your school raises will help children everywhere grow up happy, healthy and able to play. Just like children should. And don’t forget – every £1 you raise until 23 July 2019 will be matched by the UK government, meaning double the difference you make to children’s lives.

Are you ready to get the ball rolling?

Let’s play!

SIMPLE STEPS TO FUNDRAISEIt’s really easy to make something amazing happen. Simply follow this checklist with your pupils...

3SPREAD THE WORDNow it’s time for your pupils to tell the world what they’re doing. Hand out stickers, put posters up in school, get on social media and sign people up to the team sheet.

Download the letter template to share with parents and get friends and family involved as much as possible.

2DESIGN YOUR CHALLENGEIt’s your pupils’ turn to do some planning! Check out the F2 course design on page 8 for some obstacle inspiration, or turn to page 11 to find out what else your school can do to reach your goal. Whatever your pupils decide to do, make sure there’s something for everyone.

1SET A GOALFirst things first, set yourselves a realistic goal. Pages 6 and 7 will tell you about the huge difference your fundraising will make to children’s lives. There are no rules about how you reach it your goal. Just keep your eye on the ball!

Every child should have a childhood full of play, fun, learning and laughter. Soccer Aid for Unicef raises money to protect children in danger around the world and to help make sure they grow up healthy, happy and safe. From your playground to the Soccer Aid pitch, we’re all on the same team.

Starting on Friday 14 June, Soccer Aid for Unicef Playground Challenges will be taking place up and down the UK, and on Sunday 16 June at 7.30pm on ITV, the big match will kick off. This is when some of the biggest names in football, TV and music get together to play one of the most entertaining games you’ll see all year.

Together we are defending play for every child.

7

How will your money defend play for children?

Brothers Ayas, 5, and Younus, 9, were forced to leave their home in Myanmar when conflict erupted. Their parents were killed by soldiers and their lives were turned upside down.

They now live in the Balukhali refugee camp with their grandma and sister. Their favourite place in the camp is Unicef’s child friendly space. Here they play football, play with toys and have lessons.

Play. Fundraise. Change children’s lives.

Unicef has enabled them to have the best childhood they can – something that every child is entitled to.

The money you raise from your Playground Challenge could help provide toys, books and games so that children like Ayas and Younus grow up happy, healthy and able to play. Just like children should.

Introduce your pupils to Ayas and Younus using the learning posters and assembly plan in your RRSA teaching kit: socceraid.com/schools-resources

“ I like to play with the toy horses, elephants and tigers.”

Get everyone warmed up. Why not let your pupils run the show here?

GET THE WHOLE SCHOOL MOVING!

STAR JUMPSEveryone loves a star jump. Get people to stretch their arms and legs as far as possible.

BALL BALANCINGThis will get everyone laughing - ask them to put a ball on their head, then run or walk to the other side of the playground.

ARM CIRCLESThis one’s not too energetic, but gets the blood flowing in the upper body.

SIDE STEPPINGDo your best crab impressions by getting low, running sideways, and making pincers with your hands (the pincers are optional, but definitely help with the crab impression).

QUICK FEET Time to get a sweat on. Get everyone to sprint on the spot so fast that their feet become a blur. Then keep going!

SQUATSThese look easy but after 10 you really start to feel the burn!

There are loads of extra things you can do to give your fundraising a little boost, such as:

• A keepy-uppy challenge – keepy-uppy the ball and your fundraising target.

• A beat-the-teacher penalty shootout – always a crowd-pleaser to watch your maths teacher count the goals they’re letting in.

• Bake sales – get parents and families involved and raise some extra dough.

• Women’s World Cup Sweepstake – take some (friendly) competition to the staffroom.

• Go long! Turn your challenge into a Soccer Aid for Unicef day full of different fundraising activities - or even a week, with a different activity every day!

SCORING GOALS AGAINST THE HEAD TEACHER PROVED VERY POPULAR!”Caroline Saunders, assistant principal, explains how the Soccer Aid for Unicef Playground Challenge inspired The Regis School.

THERE IS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONENo matter how sporty you are, your age or your gender, there’s something for everyone. Whether it’s designing the course, cheering on your friends, or leading the fundraising, everyone in the school gets stuck in. Parents loved the idea of it getting their children active, bringing everyone together and learning about other children around the world...and we smashed our fundraising goal!

THE KIDS ABSOLUTELY LOVED ITAnd it doesn’t matter if you’ve never done it before. We took part for the first time last year and it was fantastic. Everyone really got into it and it was so easy to put together - a real team effort for the whole school.

YOU CAN USE WHATEVER EQUIPMENT YOU’VE GOTWe had an indoor and an outdoor course which made it easier to get the whole school to take part. One of the favourites from our Playground Challenge was the penalty shoot-out at the end – scoring goals against the head teacher proved very popular!

EVERY CHILD HAS THE RIGHT TO PLAYIt really gets pupils thinking about their rights, and about how other children around the world don’t have the childhood they are entitled to, simply because they don’t have enough water, food or medicine. Soccer Aid for Unicef reminded us how lucky our pupils are to have the chance to learn and play in a safe environment.

The best part about it is that the pupils know the difference they are making is really going to change children’s lives.

WE’VE NEVER HAD AN ACTIVITY THAT BROUGHT EVERYONE TOGETHER SO WELL.”
