The SOAR Centre is a peer-to-peer support service for Higher Degree by Research & Honours

students. The SOAR Sessions are small group discussions, where our SOAR Ambassadors (also

HDR candidates), share some of their skills and experiences. One-to-one appointments are also

Getting your papers published in peer-reviewed journals

Presented by Arman Abednia (SOAR Ambassador)

There is increasing demand in Iran (and internationally) for graduate students to publish

high quality research arising from their theses, and publishing papers in refereed journals

has become a major criterion against which Iranian academics’ knowledge of their area of

expertise and research skills are gauged. There are courses of academic writing offered in

graduate programs of TEFL at some universities which often focus on general skills

related to academic writing. However, many of these courses are not specifically geared to

preparing students to publish papers in peer-reviewed journals. To help bridge this gap,

this workshop is intended to help participants improve their ability to:

Identify areas worth publishing in their theses

Produce high quality publications from their research

Identify criteria against which the quality and publishability of manuscripts are

determined

some de-identified papers the presenter has reviewed for international and local

journals (see the bio)

his own and other reviewers’ feedback on them and the comments he has received

on his own papers

the materials he has been provided by the abovementioned journals to help him

with reviewing manuscripts

At the end of the workshop, the participants will be provided resources, including

manuals, journal editors’ blog posts, publication guides, and papers about publication, for
