So what is the UDAP anyways? UDAP, which stands for Utility Deposit Assistance Program, assists with the deposit for connection of utilities in off-campus houses or apartments that do not already include them in the rent payments. The purchasing of a UDAP eliminates the deposit fees for turning on the water, gas, and electricity (cable and internet are not included in the utilities supported by the UDAP). The UDAP costs $40, and can be purchased through a student’s MyMadison account (the $40 is taken directly out of the student’s account). Simply purchasing the UDAP does not mean that the utilities for the property will be turned on. The student must contact the utility companies after the purchase of the UDAP and provide Who We Are OCL Mission Statement It is our mission to assist students in gaining necessary knowledge and skills to make informed decisions within the JMU off campus community. This contract number is a 5-digit number that the student receives after the purchase of the UDAP.

Who is eligible to purchase a UDAP?Any full-time, degree seeking, currently active JMU student who has no financial holds on their JMU account, and lives off-campus!

How do I purchase a UDAP?Just follow these five easy steps:

1. Log into www.mymadison.jmu.edu. 2. Click on the “Student” tab. 3. Click on “Student Center”. Here you

will see Academics, Finances, Personal Information, and On-Campus Housing sections.

4. Under the Finances section, choose “UDAP Contract Purchase” from the “Other Financial” dropdown menu. IMPORTANT: Make sure to enter the address you will be moving to/where you will be connecting utilities under the “Service Address” section.

5. Also under the Finances section, click “View UDAP Contract” to view the completed contract.

So I have roommates… Do we all need to purchase a UDAP?Nope! Not unless you plan on each taking responsibility for separate utilities. If you and your roommates do plan on splitting all of the utilities evenly each month, then only one person needs to purchase the UDAP. All of the utilities will be in their name, and the roommates can repay that roommate accordingly each month based on how they split the total bills.

When do I purchase a UDAP?UDAP contracts can be purchased anytime during the year beginning April 1st. If you plan on purchasing a UDAP for the 2017-2018 academic year, your contract is valid from the date of purchase until July 31, 2018. The contract does not automatically renew and will expire on the July 31st date. If a student would like to continue their UDAP contract they must purchase another one prior to the July 31st expiration date and then contact the utility companies with the new 5-digit contract number.

What are Multiple Meters?Often found in apartment complexes and other multi-unit buildings, “multiple meters” means that utilities will be monitored through meters located in a “multi meter bank” with other meters in the same location. In order to determine if the property has multiple meters, the student can call the landlord or property manager. This information should also be included in the student’s lease. If the property does in fact have multiple meters, there is a separate UDAP form for these circumstances that can be retrieved from the office of Off-Campus Life and must be completed in addition to the original UDAP purchased on MyMadison. In order to complete this contract, you will need your current 5-digit UDAP contract number, the address where the utilities will be connected, and which utilities (water/electric/gas) have multiple meters and how many meters. Off-Campus Life will assist in the completion of this contract. After the student signs it, the office faxes the contract to the utility companies and the JMU Fiscal Technician. They also provide the student with a copy of the contract for their personal records.
