The story behind the “Keep it in Kent” bag We are all starting to cotton‐on to the new 5p bag charge since it came in on 5th October this year. Although it seems a bit of a pain, we know that it’s all in a good cause. The aim to reduce the use of plastic carrier bags can only be beneficial to the environment, so we leave it in a better state for our children…

Although there are slightly more expensive “bags for life” being sold by the supermarkets, they’re also made of non‐biodegradable plastic, and conveniently carry advertising for the big supermarkets that are sucking the life out of our local economy by undercutting the prices of our local businesses.

That’s why we came up with the idea of the Keep it in Kent bag. We want to encourage everyone to think about spending locally, because if we all swapped just £10 per month of our spending into Kent businesses, there would be an extra £177 MILLION boost to the local economy – making Kent a better place for all of us to live!

So we ran a competition in October, and were thrilled with the number of creative entries for the design. In the end, we chose a striking design by Gavin at Stonk Creative in Dymchurch. We hope you’ll agree, the brightly coloured design will appeal to both adults and children alike, and is a great reminder of how lucky we are to have all this within our county! “I like the idea behind the Keep it in Kent campaign and I'm a guy that prefers the older values, buy meat from butcher, veg from a greengrocer, fish from a fishmonger, bread from a baker etc. I know where the produce comes from and it’s usually so much better quality” said Gavin. “I hadn’t expected to win but I did! I was and still am chuffed to bits about it. I love seeing my work out in big wide world, it’s a very satisfying feeling.”

Indoor Success!For Kent College

Kent College reached the U18 National Indoor Hockey Finals at Bromsgrove School having won the East Regional

round. The team played very well to finish top of their group with wins over Wellingborough 8-0, Beaconsfield 3-2 and Wakefield 2-1.

Kent College were unfortunate to lose 1-3 to Trent College in the semi-final despite having most of the play and chances on goal. However the players were still delighted to finish in the top four in the country. Kent College’s U.14 outdoor Hockey team have also reached the National Finals and will be in action on the 8th March at the Olympic park.

Indoor Rowing ChampionshipsHosted by Spires

On Thursday 14th January over 350 students from 11 schools took part in the Kent School Games Indoor Rowing

Championships, hosted by Spires Academy. The event is held as a qualification tournament for the Kent School games which is a bi-annual festival of sport that will be happening this summer. Students raced against others in their age group for a set amount of time. They also took part in a team relay where they had to quickly jump off of the rowing machine to allow the next member of their team to start rowing.

As you know we are working hard to improve the attendance of our children, to give them the best opportunity of education that we possibly can. To promote our attendance we are working in conjunction with local businesses and companies. One of the local businesses that we approached was MFA Group as we feel that Bowling is a great family activity; It encourages play, team work and maths calculations. We would like to say a BIG Thank you to MFA Group who donated a voucher for complimentary bowling for a family of four, including a sharing platter, as an Attendance Prize. At the end of Term 2 all children who had attendance of 98% and

above and who arrive to school regularly and on time went into a lottery for this wonderful prize. The lucky winner of that prize was Freya Maling 3AT.

Well done Freya! We hope you enjoy your time at MFA Bowling in Whitstable.

Mud Pies or Mince Pies for Christmas!

Christmas came early for Northbourne Park School Pre-Prep children, when earlier in December they discovered a beautiful new Mud Kitchen in the school garden.

The children were so excited that they couldn’t wait to start “cooking”.

Class Two children were the first outside for their Forest School lesson, where they mixed and “cooked” in their new bowls and pans, preparing a “feast” for their classmates who then “ate” at the wonderful new tables and benches (all carved by local wood carver Les Langley and from fallen logs from the school grounds).

Other children were quick to follow at playtime.

The Mud Kitchen is a wonderful new resource and provides the children with another opportunity to take part in child initiated activities. We are extremely fortunate in having this equipment to enhance the children’s creative play on a daily basis.

Northbourne Park’s Director of Outdoor Education and Forest School Practitioner, Priscilla Smith said: “Northbourne Park’s 100 acres of private parkland and woods provides the perfect environment in which to bring learning to life. Here we ensure that every child is able to learn, explore and experience the great outdoors.

School News - Telephone issues New Provider provides new phones - 01227 31 40 31

Over the past few weeks School News has experienced some issues with its telephone system, some of you may have tried to call us on our old number 01227 828688 and the line was dead. Well we have not gone out of business as some people thought, we just had some technical issues. These issues are sorted now and having spoken with Scott Grey from Everycomm we have been advised of the benefits of VoIP.

Not only is there a huge cost saving but there is also infinately more you can achieve with a VoIP system, more lines, better call clarity and far more flexibility. Did you know, you can take a VoIP handset home and make and recieve calls to your office number just by plugging the phone into your computer. After talking with Scott about what other services they can provide, we found out they can help us with putting in new computers and a server into our office and helping to manage our IT requirements.

In short Everycomm are able to offer your business, like they have with our business, the opportunity to do more. They have also got a very good team behind them offering fantastic customer support and as a new customer I would recommend them highly if you are looking for a better phone system and want excellent customer service.

Our new telephone number is 01227 31 40 31 please use this number from now on to contact School News.

The Windmill run by Richard Phillips, hosted the Kent Young Chef Charity Dinner on Thursday 21st January. The event was held by Produced in Kent, organisers of the Kent Young Chef Award and hosted by Head Judge, Richard.

Produced in Kent welcomed nearly fifty guests to the event that helps raise money for a charitable organisation, nominated yearly. Money raised from the evenings raffle and from the prestigious ‘Taste of Kent Awards’ ceremony and dinner will go to The Blackthorn Trust. Stephanie Durling, organiser said, “We are delighted that this year the money raised from a number of our events will go to help this wonderful local charity. The Blackthorn Trust based in Maidstone, has a number of amenities that are used by individuals with a range of mental and physical health conditions. The charity aims to help build or gain confidence and self-esteem and to develop life and work skills. Their holistic approach to recovery has seen a huge success rate and we are delighted to be raising money to support them. Thank you to our sponsors and Produced

in Kent members for the wonderful prizes”. The guests for the Charity Dinner included sponsors, judges and the winners family and friends. All diners were extremely impressed by the delicious and accomplished three course meal celebrating the very best Kentish Produce. The two winners from the ‘Live Cook-off’ in November; Lillie Matthews and Kajan Subakannan, were commis chefs for the evening under Head Chef Will Devlin.

The winners helped prepare and plate the evening menu of Hand Picked Rye Bay Crab for starter accompanied with Brown Crab Mayonnaise, Pickled Fennel and an English Caviar and Coriander Salad. A local producer supplied the delicious duck main

course, which was served with a Merlot Braised Red Cabbage, Roasted Onions and Chanterelle Mushrooms and creamed Butternut Squash. The meal concluded with a superb Rubens Apple Cake, Cinnamon Doughnut, Crisp Meringue and a Milk Sorbet.

Will Devlin from The Windmill said, “Both Lillie

and Kajan helped plate up the starter, seared the duck breasts, helped with the doughnuts and sorbet for the desserts and made the chocolate truffles we served after the meal with coffee. It was great to have two enthusiastic young people in the kitchen, they asked plenty of questions and were really interested in how the food was being prepared”.

Lillie Matthews, aged 14, found the whole experience really useful “Tonight has been amazing, this is the first time I have ever been in a commercial kitchen and the atmosphere was brilliant”. Lillie was invited to cook her winning Kent Young Chef Award dish live on BBC Radio Kent, where she met Matthew Kearsey-Lawson from Kent

Fine Foods. Matthew attends a number of Kent Farmers Markets and following the debut on Radio, Lillie has been doing demonstrations at the Tonbridge and Aylesford Markets with Matthew. She has also been invited to take part in the Why Farming Matters Cookery Theatre at the Kent County Show in July.

Kajan, aged 12, loved working with the team at the Windmill, he said “tonight was nothing like the competition, there was a different atmosphere and we had really good fun. The competition has helped me grow as a cook and I am now experimenting with ingredients and flavours, on occasions I have even give my Mum advice and she is a wonderful cook.”

Both Lillie and Kajan will be honing their skills in time for the Regional finals of Springboard’s ‘Future Chef’ competition; the Kent Young Chef Award title this year automatically fast tracks them to this competition and both young chefs will be joined by other finalists. They will be required to prepare and cook a hot main course and a hot/cold dessert for two people.

Future Chef will be hosted at Bromley College, Orpington campus, all contestants have a budget of £10 and need to produce both

courses in 90 minutes. The competition takes place on Tuesday 2nd February and the wining young chef will go on to represent the South East in the National Final.

The finalists had two hours to produce their seasonal, regional recipes and had to bring all the raw ingredients with them. The college provided each finalist with catering students who helped with queries and equipment but were not allowed to assist with any cooking. Produced in Kent, organisers are grateful to West Kent College for providing the facilities and also for arranging an impressive lunch prepared by students, prior to the announcement of the two winners in the college’s commercial restaurant, The View.

For those of you who follow us on Facebook you will see that I have been talking great deal over the last few weeks about technology and the part it plays in our lives. Don’t get me wrong I am all for it, I couldn’t do my job without it and Google is my new best friend, however like most things it also has its dangers.Like most families we try to impose rules around the use of technology especial-ly mobile phones/ iPad /tablets etc… but my hus-band is the worst offender his closest relationship is with his mobile phone. He is obsessed work, emails, facebook, games, and something called Boom Beach. The

question is therefore how can I impose these restric-tions on my children? My older children are sitting GCSEs/ Alevels so I had to relax the ban on internet in their bedrooms so they could study or at least pretend to study. I gave into peer pressure and brought my 10 year old a tablet for his birthday he spends most of his time watching the Harry

Potter films on loop, so not too offensive and like his father playing Boom beach. It does however still worry me, is he spending too much time on it? Is he becoming unsociable? How much peer pressure will there be in the future, at what age will my 3 year old be when it all gets too much and I have to buy him a tablet, or whatever the future holds. Talking

of the future, I am prob-ably behind the times but my husband and I brought my eldest son a smart watch for Christmas so now he doesn’t even have to pick up his phone, he delighted in showing us how he could control the music on his phone without touching it. Oh yes and now my husband wants a smart watch for his birthday! There is plenty of advice out there; funnily enough most of it is accessible through websites and social media. The stron-gest advice coming across seems to be that the sav-vier you child is online the safer they will be. I don’t know about you but my children seem to know

more than I do, my 81 year old Dad was brought a tablet for Christmas and did he ask my help? No of course not he asked my 10 year old son, he knows as well as I do that my son knows how to use it better than me. Rather than try to filter, block content or impose those restrictions, because you know and

they know that they will find a way around that, get educated, learn together and stay safe. So Boom beach here I come I’m going to get savvy…..Note to my children – Don’t get your hopes up Mobiles are still banned from the dinner table.

See our website for links to more advice on promoting safer internet use.

Recently I had the fantastic opportunity to pop in and preview what will be a brand new family centre brought to you by Fegans children’s charity. What a fabulous building this is, tactile and welcoming there is an interactive mini soft play area with lights and sounds, private meeting rooms, a community café area, a pre-school and a huge light and airy hall for activities. I was overwhelmed by how much care and thought had gone into the design and build of this centre where the main focus is community. I had great pleasure in chatting with various members of staff including Angie Jordan East Kent Area Manager and Jane Williams, manager of the Fegans preschool Buttons, about what the future holds for this brand new centre. Fegans aim is to create a family focused caring environment; a place the community can really get involved in where all

children and parents feel safe. So in addition to the fantastic family centre facilities there will also be a team of caring people ready to help families deal with the various challenges life brings.145 year old charity, Fegans, have received significant financial support from the Maurice and Hilda Laing Charitable Trust to build this bespoke building, designed with children and families in mind. However, there are still finishing touches which require extra funding. Furniture for counselling rooms, extra play resources for the pre-school and soft play area, and kitchen equipment for the community café still need

to be purchased. Can you help this amazing charity bring hope and happiness into Ramsgate? For details of how to donate or fundraise for this valuable community project, please visit www.fegans.org.uk/thanet-family-centre/ Visit our website to read more about my visit and what the future may hold for Ramsgate www.schoolnewsgroup.co.uk.

Following the Atlantic LionsAcross the Atlantic Ocean in aid of the MS TrustOver the last month or so we have been proudly following four amazing guys as they update live blogs from their Talisker Whisky Atlantic challenge, the toughest race on earth.Their aim is to raise £100,000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Trust.School News Group is very proud to be part of the pride and sponsor the guys, as they battle against exhaustion, hallucination, blisters, salt rashes, sharks and sleep deprivation. They are rowing more than 3000miles, as they set off from San Sebastien, La Gomera, across the untamed seas of the Atlantic. The mental and physical endurance will result in a life changing achievement; their journey has been a fascinating account to read, from the safety of my nice warm, dry house. Soon they will arrive in Nelson’s Dockyard

English Harbour, Antigua, safe and dry. We cannot wait to catch up with them when they come home, in the meantime we will continue to follow their amazing challenge.Check out our interview from last year with the boys before they left on our
