Fraternally President of the Cheyenne Shrine Club

Noble William Zegley

At the September Club meeting Ill Sir Tim received his gavel. Remember that at installation it became missing. It was not even 3.2 seconds, when Ill Sir approached the lectern when it fell into the lost column again. However, Ill Sir Tim was keeping an eye on it and was able to recover the gavel before the evening was over. A side note: The Club meeting was active on

purchase as a unit at least six new Go Carts. It would a boost to our activities within the Shrine and Community. We will announce the result of our search for new vehicles and their prices in November.

Please keep in your prayers, Ladies Val Guritza, and Marlene Toulouse, and Nobles Bob Tenney, Bob Toulouse, and Art Lockman. I also encourage you to call and talk with our Legion of Honor Members reminding them that we are thinking of them. Our Nation will weather this challenge if we all stay together. Noble Irv Wolverton Commander, Telephone: 307-701-1508 E-mail: [email protected]

P.S. Noble Irv was lucky this month. Per his Facebook page he won some fundage from a local group. Reach out and congratulate him on this win. Yes, I would have liked it to be me, but I was not entered and Noble Irv was. Glad to hear that one of our own received some good news.

From the Great

Frontier!

Noble Frontiersmen and lovely Ladies, Here we are the fall colors are back and soon the leaves will be all over your front teepee flap. Our forest is under attack by the Mullen fire. Just heard that Noble Grant Farris and his Lady Alice have a cabin that is in danger. Please hope for the best that moisture of any kind is coming soon to stop or halt this fire. Sad news that Lady Carol Russell lost their family cabin because of this fire. It was only a matter of time as the deadfall from the Beatle kill was bound to catch fire. The positive out of this is the forest will return and be stronger than ever. It just takes longer than anyone of us would like. Hosting duties are a little tough at the moment. The Frontiersmen are down to only

a Zoom video feed. If you would like to attend the meeting portion of the evening on October 22, 2020 at 7 pm. Let us know and we can send out an invite to everyone.

Legion of Honor

It has been a long and slow seven-month

living with the COVID-19 pandemic. The Shrine Club has opened for various group while practicing steps to keep Nobles and guest safe from the coronavirus. I invite you to join us on Friday Night Happy Hour and on Wednesday morning Coffee Hour but do so only if you feel comfortable about participating.

The Cheyenne Shrine Club held its first business meeting on the fourth Thursday of September. Five Legion of Honor members participated in the first meeting to include: Nobles Kody Zubrod, Matt Macloed, Cory Gullory, Randy Bigelow, and Bill Zegley. The LOH did not have a unit business meeting.

Prior to closing in March there were discussion about replacing our Go-Carts and building up our membership in the “Low Riders.” Accordingly, we’ve begun to look at the possibility of buying new Go-Carts. Presently, we have only three remaining Go-Carts, and these vehicles are more than 50 years old. From our historical records, the Low Riders apparently began around 1968 and in those early years we had more than 12 active Go-Carts. The Low Riders participated in numerous functions locally as well as in Parades in other States. Our Chief of Staff is seeking Low Rider shirts to be worn in the Frontier Days Parades and other events. If you are interested in participating and buying a Go Cart and joining the Low Riders, please contact Noble Young. We would hope to

about 4 of us that are active. 2 of us are also active in the Indians. Lady Jeri and I are down for at least a week. On Oct 3rd we visited a close friend at the Sheridan-East Volleyball game. On Oct 9th we received a call she has tested positive for Covide-19. We are staying close to home now to make sure we are okay and that we don’t pass anything on to anyone else. We will keep you all in the loop. Just a reminder that this disease can come from anywhere. This disease is not like the Flu. When was the last time you went to your Doctor and asked for a Flu test. Usually the Doc said from your symptoms is sounds like the flu. Now, you get a Covide test to rule that out. Why? Because it is different. Stay sharp, stay safe, and the vaccine is coming. We just need to be patient as our first responders, military and older population will be the first to receive an APPROVED vaccine. Then as it is ready the rest of the population will have a chance. Be smart and stay informed as I’m sure Con Artists will be making phone calls trying to sell you the first pill form. DO NOT give out your personal information. Make a plan to go through your Doctor for this vaccine. The Club is open on Friday nights and there is plenty of space in the ballroom to meet. Try to stay 4 to a table and have your masks. Yes, it is tough to eat or drink through a mask. You can take it off then, but try to keep it on as much as possible when not taking a drink. We just need to be thoughtful of others and our own safety. Please come out only if you feel safe.

Use other means of reaching out to your friends. There is video conferencing by computer or by your smartphone, a good ole phone call works, and if you are agreeable a personal visit on the front lawn or porch is good. We look forward to the day we can once again meet in person to laugh and share stories. Keep track of the stories of staying at home. Like waking up one morning and you really did not know what day it was. They all ran together and I think we need to paint one of the walls a different color. Just because I’m sick and tired of it. Hey! Love and miss you all. See you sooner than you think. Colonel Cliff Spoonemore [email protected] [email protected]

GREY MEADOWS RECREATION

The weather is changing the second weekend in October with a cold front coming down from Canada and some pacific moisture that is much needed. If you have not removed your camper from the lake, now would be a good time. The weather is still warm and dry. Not much fun working to remove your camper when it is either raining or snowing. Be safe and we will share the news on next year when we have something to say.

would be keeping families 6’ or more away from each other. Every other row would need to be closed. We know that people want to be in the center. The aisles have to remain open and we would have to have extra volunteers to monitor the traffic on the concourse. Our concessions would not be able to be on the concourse. And we may need a person or two to monitor the restrooms to keep from having tooooo many in at any given time. The LCCC President’s Council will be meeting in November or December to determine if they are to remain under the current rules or move to a stronger set of rules. In short it does not look as if we will have a Circus in May of 2021. The Cheyenne Shrine Board of Directors will have the final say, but if you have

NOT THE LAST WORD

Hello Ladies and Nobles: Happy October to all. It has been a beautiful day in the neighborhood. I do want to send prayers to those that have been fighting the Mullen Fire and to those that have property in that vicinity. This fire has been devastating and it makes my heart sad with the destruction. Hopefully there will be some positive and that the deadfall will be cleaned out and Mother Earth can then regenerate and make that land new again. I am not going to get on my bandwagon and preach about Covid-19 as we get that everywhere else, but I will say so many people still do not take this seriously & until you have been personally affected it does not seem real. That being said, a family that we met in Arizona, friends of our daughters’, have lost 3 members of their family and the rest are all positive. It has been an eye opening experience to feel their pain. Closer to home, I am staying home because my best friend just tested positive. I saw her on Oct 3 (after being at club on the 2nd) and we both wore our masks and did not spend hours together as she was coaching her volleyball team. One of the team members has tested positive so she went in and the results were confirmed today(10/9). She thought she just had a cold. I have no symptoms and have tried to stay away from people just as a rule of thumb. My point is, this Covid-19 does not care who it lands on. I am hoping you all are taking the necessary precautions and are staying safe. I have been diligent with hand washing and hand sanitizer when I do go out. I do wear my mask. I did get a little lazy the last time I was at club but did wear my mask the majority of the time. There was no possible exposure at that time so I feel confident no one I came in contact with should be concerned from me. I just want you all to be careful and I do look forward to the time we can all meet together and laugh and

talk. I miss our conversations in person. Have you had a chance to see the beautiful colors Mother Nature has graced us with? Noble Cliff & I took a ride up Happy Jack when the smoke cleared enough we could see and it is beautiful. I hope you all can take some time and view her splendor. We can take the good things when we can. Lady Sheila Beavers continues to keep our entrance hall decorated and welcoming. The flowers she put together are beautiful and I hope you get a chance to see them. Thank you Lady Sheila for your time. Lady Kathleen brought out some delicious carrot cake muffins for Happy Hour and I will say, they made me very happy. Thank you Lady Kathleen. I talked with Lady Carol Russell today(10/9) and she relayed to me that their cabin has been hit by the fire and has burned down. I am very sorry to hear that as 1 more person we know of has been personally affected by the fire. I know it is “stuff”, but sometimes “stuff” brings comfort. Especially those with breathing difficulties, be careful outside. I for one am looking forward to a start of a new year that hopefully brings positive with it. Stay Well, Stay Safe, and let us hear from you. I will continue to try to reach out & keep up with you. Lady Jeri

or Riverton. Yes, they know that Fremont County is a hot spot for Covide-19 but it is centrally located and the two Wyoming Temples can work together. The target month is November 2020. And if this does not work out then the alternative will be to have ceremonial at Rawlins. Everyone can see the new paint job and new carpet in the building. Keep an eye on the Korein Temple website for more details.

PART 1: THE FORMATIVE

YEARS OF THE KOREIN LEGION

OF HONOR*

The International Association Legions of Honor is an organization within Shriners International that is composed of nearly 150 separate local Legion of Honor units, all part of their local Shrine Temples. Members of these local Legion of Honor units are all Shriners who have honorably served or are currently serving in the Armed Forces of their country. Our stated objectives are: to foster a spirit of patriotism, love of country and flag; to perpetuate the memory of our comrades in arms who made the supreme sacrifice by giving their lives for their country while serving as members of the Armed Forces; and, to devote our efforts as individuals and Legion of Honor units to strive for an increase in friendship and cooperation between our Legion of Honor units and the other units of

Shriners International. Dispensation for the Korein Shrine Temple was given 8 October 1894. It was officially chartered on 2 September 1895 in Rawlins, Wyoming. Korein means in Arabic “Little Horn.” An application for chartering the Cheyenne Shrine Club was submitted to the Korein Shrine Temple on 3 June 1957. On 20 October 1958, a charter and constitution were issued (the Cheyenne Shrine Club at is present location was apparently dedicated in early 1962). In late 1956, a letter was sent to the Korein Shrine Temple requesting permission to form the Korein Legion of Honor. The Korein Potentate granted a Charter to the Legion of Honor on 1 May 1957. The first formal meeting was held in the Frontier Hotel, in the same room where the Cheyenne Shrine Club held its meetings. The Charter was signed by 54 Shriners, all veterans or active duty military. Subsequently, the Korein Legion of Honor was recognized by National Legion of Honor Association. In 1963, the Korein Legion of Honor was given the recognition of being the official Color Guard for the Korein Shrine Temple. By that recognition: “The Korein Legion of Honor was to assist in any way the Potentate may designate and be at his service while perpetuating the memory of those who gave their life in Service of our Country, fostering a spirit of patriotism and love of Country.” In 1957, the first Officers for the Korein Legion of Honor were Noble James H. Ables, Commander; Noble Harold Hansen, First Vice Commander; Noble Forrest M. Powers, Adjutant; and Noble Lloyd A. Steinmetz, Finance Officer. Noble Powers contacted the Military Base in Omaha, Nebraska and obtained “new” uniforms left over from World War I. The uniform consisted of short brownish colored pants, with wrap leggings. One
