The world's largest museum and research institution, the Smithsonian has nine research facilities, 19 galleries, and a National Zoo. Since its beginning in 1846, the Smithsonian Institution has been working to increase knowledge and share that knowledge with the world. Research at the institute concentrates on understanding a biodiverse planet, cultural diversity, exploring the fundamentals of the universe, and learning what it means to be an American.

Recently, the Smithsonian announced an opportunity for children to have a sleepover in the Smithsonian's National Museum of National History. Starting in May and going through August of 2014, children and their chaperones can experience the exhibits in interactive ways with puzzles, games, challenges, and more. The evening also includes an I-MAX film screening, snack, breakfast, and exclusive access to the museum, which includes the chance to sleep under the museum's life-sized replica of a North American right whale.
