Polkadraai Road Rehabilitation The rehabilitation of Polkadraai Road, located in the Western Cape province of South Africa, was completed in November 2014.

The 10.6 km road carries predominantly commuter traffic, and is the main transport route between Kuilsrivier and Stellenbosch.

SMEC was engaged by the Western Cape Government for design and supervision of the project. Works involved in situ recycling and stabilisation (using bitumen emulsion) of various sections of existing road surface to a depth of 200 mm. The entire road was then surfaced with a continuously-graded asphalt and a modified binder.

Project scope also included: alterations to existing stormwater structures; construction of new stormwater grid inlets, headwalls and drainage structures; concrete-lined side drains; and subsurface drainage.

A major challenge of the project was traffic accommodation. The Polkadraai Road Rehabilitation was one of three projects simultaneously underway to improve access roads into Stellenbosch. This required collaboration and coordination with other project works, to ensure minimal disruption to the public.

This was one of three projects

simultaneously underway to improve

access roads into Stellenbosch.

Alleviating Traffic CongestionSMEC South Africa has been engaged by the Manguang Metropolitan Municipality to assist in optimising the city of Bloemfontein’s arterial road network.

As part of this contract, SMEC completed a feasibility investigation to alleviate traffic congestion at critical intersections around the city, through grade separation. SMEC’s Roads and Highways Team took the opportunity to creatively conceptualise feasible grade separation solutions. This included the addition of a Furstenburg/Nelson Mandela Avenue road bridge, and three pedestrian bridges at Nelson Mandela Avenue, Elizabeth Drive and Melville Drive.

Geological Support for Hydropower Projects in IndiaSMEC India is currently involved in several hydropower projects in the Himalayan mountain range.

In October-November 2014, Robert Goldsmith (Chief Technical Principal Engineering Geology, Melbourne) visited three hydropower sites to provide engineering geological support and project reviews.

Robert was accompanied by the Civil Infrastructure and Geological Team from the Gurgaon office, consisting of Neeta Arora (Hydropower & Dams Functional Manager), Prashant Agrawal (General Manager), Girish Kaistha (Senior Consultant Geotechnics), Rupak Sthapit (Senior Associate Geologist) and Ravi Kumar (Professional Geologist).

Tehri Hydropower Pumped Storage Project

Located on the Bhagirathi River in Northern India, this project involves the underground extension of the existing 1,000 MW Tehri Hydrpower Project. SMEC has been engaged by the Hindustan Construction Company to review all logging of rock exposures, rock classifications and support for tunnels, chambers and shafts in a tightly foliated sequence of phyllite and quartzite rock.

Parnai Hydroelectric Project

This project will involve construction of a 9 km long headrace tunnel for the 37.5 MW Parnai Hydroelectric Project, located on the Suran River near the India-Pakistan border. SMEC recently completed extensive geological mapping for M/S Patel Engineering that will be used to finalise project layouts and assist with design.

Shahpurkandi Dam Project

Located on the Ravi River in India’s Punjab State, the Shahpurkandi Dam is a concrete buttress with street gates and a concrete overflow spillway. The Soma-Bureya Joint Venture has contracted SMEC to provide detailed designs to assist in improving foundations, creating an effective seepage cutoff and stabilising abutments.

The SMEC India Civil Infrastructure and Geological Team often works in remote, challenging and difficult to reach sites with complex geological conditions. It is the team’s ability to understand the unique conditions of each project and geological environment that ensures these hydropower projects are a success.

Maintenance Procedure Development SMEC was engaged to assist in the development of documented procedures for pre-planned corrective maintenance for new onshore production facilities, located in Southern Texas, USA. Field studies were conducted to determine

all safety, step-by-step job instructions and resources required to safely and efficiently complete each maintenance activity. This information was then used to create SAP task lists.

SMEC India is currently involved in several hydropower

projects located in the Himalayan mountain range.

SAP Training at Peak Gold MineIn October 2013, SMEC’s Asset Management function conducted an audit of the Peak Gold Mine, located in central New South Wales, Australia.

The objective of the audit was to identify any deficiencies in the mine’s Systems Applications Products (SAP) system, and to determine if maintenance and supply teams were using the system correctly.

The initial audit concluded that while the system was operating as it should, several improvements could be made, including: development of master data, optimisation of processes and greater training support.

Based on these findings, SMEC has been engaged to conduct a Training Needs Analysis and develop a program to address the lack of systems knowledge.

Scope of work includes: SAP data (including maintenance and supply functions); work management processes; reporting; transactional security review; task list development; capturing and reporting contractor hours; warehouse operational improvements; purchasing process review and analysis; and warranty claims.

SMEC will also assist with a site Energy Efficiency Improvement Program and a Criticality Assessment at the mine.

Occupational Health & Safety UpdateSafety in Offices

Offices tend to be safe workplaces. There are, however, certain issues which can arise in offices that may cause risks to health and safety. Such issues include:

• First Aid

• Ergonomics

• Fire Risk Management

• Electrical Hazards

• Chemical Safety

• Housekeeping

• Manual Handling

Ergonomics

The below guidelines may help to improve your day-to-day work life through better ergonomics.

• Posture and movement

– Maintain proper posture, paying careful attention to the positioning of your head, neck/spine, arms/wrists, hips/thighs and feet. Ensure the small of your back is supported, your shoulders are relaxed (not slumped and not elevated), and that there is no pressure under your thighs.

– When typing on your keyboard, use minimum force while striking the keys.

– Avoid reaching awkwardly for your telephone, mouse and reference materials.

– Take mini-breaks throughout the day to give muscles and joints a chance to rest and recover.

– Give eyes a break by closing them momentarily, gazing at a distant object and blinking frequently.

• Environment

– Maintain appropriate light levels for specific tasks. More illumination is usually needed to read a document than a computer screen.

– Adjust the contrast and brightness on your computer screen to a comfortable level.

– Clean the computer screen and other surfaces regularly.

– Reduce the number of dust-collecting items on your desk, such as paper and files.

– Be considerate to others working in the area and conduct meetings and conversations in appropriate areas.

• Work programming/planning

– Reduce stress by planning ahead and setting realistic expectations for what you can accomplish during each work day.

– Vary tasks to make the day more interesting.

– Avoid long periods of repetitive activity.

– Take mini-breaks that re-energise, invigorate and refresh.
