• FATs to depict actual network on which plant is to be used

All tests to be agreed at design review stage

Quadrature-booster Learning Outcomes cont’d

• Now have better understanding of Quadrature-boosters for distribution networks

Refine phase angle to achieve finer step changes

Easier modelling and placing bucking/boosting

• Installation, operation & maintenance are similar to equivalent power transformers

• QBCS logic varies as distribution network configuration evolves

What can we do differently in future?

• Produced protection scheme template for first QB – with support from Mott MacDonald,

and validation using RTDS by Alstom Grid

Dynamic Line Rating Overview

• Use DLR to control flexible generation on 33kV networks

• Identify opportunities to optimise DLR settings

• Consider use of a “centralised” DLR system

Dynamic Line Rating Learning Outcomes

• Centralised DLR systems are possible (within 21km)

• CIGRE 207 model can be replicated to within ± 2% of DLR Relay output

• 47% additional amapacity uplift compared to summer

static ratings

8MW DG to be controlled against DLR output

Novel Protection Relays Overview

Objectives

• Provide alternative to DOC protection – increase reverse power capacity

• Prevent mal-operation of DOC during export conditions

Novel Protection Relays Learning Outcome

• Load blinder on/off events due to poor power factor at low loads – additional

tolerance must be added to maximum load angle

±0.85 power factor envelope was considered maximum allowable

• DNPS & DVDO stability was confirmed, and template settings established

• Load blinded DOC (Alstom Micom P142) proved as suitable mechanism for

increasing available export capacity in 132/33kV Grid Transformer

applications

Suitable for sites supplied from a single 132kV node

Further work required for sites supplied from multiple 132kV nodes
