Sludge liquor
Sludge liquor arises when the sludge is
• thickened and dewatered
The highest concentrations of NH4 and P
are in the sludge liquor behind an anaerobic digester

Biological processes for sludge liquor
treatment
• Deammonification
• no C dosage
• < 1.5 kWh/kg Neliminated
• less excess sludge
Special bacteria are used (Planktomyceten), slow growth > 11 d,
pH, NH3 and O2 have exactly to be regulated, intermittent
areation and 50 % NO2 + 50 % NH4 seem to be most effective.

Conclusions
• Anaerobic digesters conduct high concentrations of N (and P if
there is biological P elimination).
• Sludge liquor treatment reduces the load within a WWTP. It is
especially used when the activated sludge system is overloaded.
• A lot of physical-chemical and biological systems are developed
and already running in full scale plants.
