anticipating the sounds of this young talented group of five.

Soprano Pogorelc Shines in Voice Recital

By Dolores Ivanchich

Emily Pogorelc, granddaughter of Slovenian Tony and Anne (Smrekar)

Pogorelc, presented a senior voice recital at Villa Terrace on Sunday,

August 10, 2014. The program consisted of music by Handel, Bellini,

Strauss, A. Goring Thomas, Rodrigo, Korngold and Donizetti all sung in

the original languages. This talented young 18 year old soprano has

performed with the Florentine Opera, Skylight Music Theatre, Kalliope

Vocal Arts, Windfall Theatre, and La Musica Lirica throughout her high

school career. She has won first place in nine national competitions,

including the Wisconsin NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) and the Civic Music

Association of Milwaukee. Emily, a recent graduate of Whitefish Bay High School, will be

attending the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in the fall. I am sure we will be hearing much

more of this young lady in the future!

Čestitamo! Congratulations!

2014 Baraga Days in Marquette, MI

By Virginia Kmet Strukel

Eleven Slovenians from Milwaukee will be joining fellow Slovenians from the Chicago area to the annual Baraga Days, Oct.18 to the 20 in Michigan. Bishop Frederic Baraga was declared “Venerable” by the Holy Father in May, 2012. When a person is given the title of venerable, the Church declares that person worthy of public veneration and their tomb must be accessible to the public. In this new chapel, which will be blessed on Saturday, Venerable Bishop Baraga’s remains are now above ground, entombed in a marble sarcophagus. Several beautiful stained glass

windows carry symbols associated with the life and ministry of Baraga, including his Slovenian roots and honoring his missionary ministry to the Native Americans in the Upper Great Lakes. As we travel home on Monday, we will be stopping in Champion, WI. to have Mass at the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Hope. This is the only Marion site in the United States with an approved apparition by the Blessed Virgin Mary. Dr. Janez Vidmar informed me that there are four seats still available on the bus. If you are interested, please call me at 414-543-6566.

UWM Slovenian Arts Program Helps to Launch New Play—Identita!

The Slovenian Arts Program presented to Louise Zamparutti and Windfall Theatre, a pair of performance stipends for their creation and production of a new play entitled Identia.

Identità is a one-act play set in a small village along the Italy-Slovenian border. This play illustrates the struggles faced by Italy’s Slovene minority, whose native language and culture have been all but obliterated, through the eyes of 25-year-old Josh, the son of immigrants to the United States. Josh returns to his Italian-Slovenian village after his father’s death and discovers his true ethnic heritage (Slovenian), which had been kept hidden from him all his life.

Identità is influenced by interviews, conversations and observations of Slovenian individuals and families in the Italy-Slovenia border region, for whom ethnic identity preservation remains a con-stant struggle today. The play will also feature traditional Slovenian live music.

Identità performances will be at Windfall Theatre, 130 E. Juneau, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. All shows begin at 8pm and run approximately 80 minutes with no intermission. Performances will be on 9/26, 9/27, 10/3, 10/4, 10/6 10/9, 10/10 and 10/11.

Advance Ticket Purchase $20.00—Tickets at the door $23.00 Box Office: 414-332-3963 www.WindfallTheatre.com

The Council has made available to anyone interested in attending the play on Friday, October 3, free transportation. You will need to purchase your ticket. If you would like to take

advantage of this offer, please contact Virginia Strukel at 414-543-6566 before September 26 to reserve your spot on the bus.
