Tradition 11

The short and the long of it.

11. Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, and films.

Our relations with the general public should be characterized by personal anonymity. We think A.A. ought to avoid sensational advertising. Our names and pictures as A.A. members ought not be broadcast, filmed, or publicly printed. Our public relations should be guided by the principle of attraction rather than promotion. There is never need to praise ourselves. We feel it better to let our friends recommend us.

10/24/2017 Dear Fellow A.A. Members: I want to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU for the privilege of serving as the Chairperson of the steering committee for Treasure Valley Intergroup Central office for the past two years. I really want to say A GREAT BIG THANK YOU TO THE A.A. GROUPS AND THE INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS!!!! We would not be where we are at today in the office if it weren’t for the groups and the individual members contributions of money, time, effort, and support. I would like to express gratitude for Kathy W., Ron T., Paula, Scott B., Keith, Anna S., Mark S., Christine C., Janice Mc., Gordon, Kirk J., Steve C., Susan, Travis, Ellen L., Teri K., Stan, Ed L., and so many others. The hundred’s of hours these people donated to help keep the store open was incredible. It truly was the description of volunteerism and love in action. The volunteerism which kept the store open was unbelievable!!! The Steering Committee was an awesome bunch of people to work with. All the steering committee members were willing to step up and do whatever was necessary to keep Central Office open. It is with great pride we see what the store has become, see what it can be in the future, and it continues to get better and better. Lastly, I want to thank the staff members at Central Office. They are a great team, have been fabulous to work with. The office is running like “a well-oiled machine” now and it is from the dedication of Ellen, Margo, Tony, and Jeanette to Central Office and Alcoholics Anonymous as a whole that has insured the store’s success. Again thank you for the privilege of being of service to alcoholics anonymous groups and the fellowship. With Love and Service, Marti Hooper

Recovery: Bill Step by Step Step Eleven - Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

As I finished my Fifth Step, the Jesuit Priest I’d met with mentioned that God’s will for me was to love God, love myself, and love others. As a Catholic who knew the Jesuits, I was not surprised by the priest’s words and had no objections. Putting his words into practice, though, turned out to be the very challenge of daily living. What does it mean to be loving to myself and those around me? Thankfully, when I arrived at Step Eleven, the Big Book provided a perfect starting point for finding and applying God’s will through prayer and meditation.

The Eleventh Step Instructions begin with the words, “On awakening.” As soon as I open my eyes, I am asked to think about my day and ask God for direction that is devoid of selfishness and dishonest motives. Doing this on a daily basis helped me learn to pause, lift my thoughts to a higher level, and start a conversation (prayer) with my HP in a frank and human way. Instead of struggling, I’m asked to relax and take it easy and to wait patiently for answers to come (meditate). If practiced regularly this discipline helps turn the hunch or occasional inspiration into a working part of the mind. At the end of the day, the Eleventh Step has me do another scan asking if I was resentful, selfish, dishonest or afraid or if I owe an apology. If I am keeping something to myself, I am to discuss it with someone at once. Once again, AA teaches me to lift my thoughts to a higher level.

When I’m not sure of God’s will, I sometimes start with the obvious such as reading the book, working the steps, going to meetings, being of service, and helping others. My primary mission, after all, is to stay sober and to help other alcoholics achieve sobriety. Deciphering God’s will can get tricky in other areas of life such as jobs, careers, marriage, education, religion and life’s daily choices.

Early in sobriety and still unemployed, I had no idea what to do with my life. I shared honestly with my sponsor and home group members who dug deep to help me out. They rolled out my great grand sponsor who had been sponsored by Doctor Bob. He pondered my situation for a moment and drawing on his decades of sobriety said, “Kid, God doesn't give a f##k what you do. He wants you to be happy.” He said it was my job to discover what I wanted to do with my life and that AA was the key that would unlock the door to who I was and what I was supposed to do. My sponsor asked me to write down what I would do with my time if I’d won the lottery and didn’t have to work. The dreams I wrote down at nine months sober came true for me over time in ways I could not have imagined. I really had won the lottery.

As I progressed in the Eleventh Step, My sponsor challenged me to read spiritual books such as “Practicing the Presence” a book by Joel Goldsmith that is described as a classic guide to the awareness of the divine and transcendental. Over the years, I enjoyed exploring nearly every great spiritual book and religion.

My sponsor suggested prayer & meditation tools and asked that I find what worked for me. In today’s world, one can find a host of meditation tools at their fingertips on websites and apps. I found that I preferred to combine meditation with exercise. I liked to ski, run, hike or bike to peaceful spots in nature where I could relax, breathe and lift my spirits. Later, I developed a Yoga practice where in addition to stretching my body, mind, and spirit I learned to improve my breathing, balance, and concentration. All of these activities were part of an adventurous journey that was made possible by AA.

I came to AA broken by alcoholism but open to the concept of a Higher Power. I meet some newcomers in AA who are ready to run from the room when they hear the word, God. And that’s ok. In AA, each of us has the freedom to start a spiritual search exactly where we are and to follow our own path. AA promises me sobriety as long as I am willing to grow along spiritual lines.

Unity When contemplating differences between Unity, Service, and Recovery, most AA members find that it is hard to have one without the other two. When talking to out of town visitors or when being an out of town visitor, the ability to find a meeting in a strange location shows how large and unified AA is throughout the country and the world. These various meeting are not the exactly the same. Just as all the meetings in the Treasure Valley and surrounding locations are not the same. We will take a look at the variety of meetings that are available to you in our area. There will be different meetings spotlighted each issue.
