GENERAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONSBEFORE USING THE SLIDING MITER SAW

Safety is a combination of commonsense, staying alertand knowing how to use your sliding miter saw.To avoid mistakes that could cause serious injury,do notplug the tool inuntil you have read and understood thefollowing.

1. READ and become farniliarwith the entire OperatorsManual. LEARN the tool's application, limitations andpossible hazards.

KEEP GUARDS IN PLACE and in working order.

REMOVE ADJUSTING KEYS AND WRENCHES.Form the habit of checking to see that keys andadjustingwrenches are removed from the tool beforeturning ON.

KEEP WORK AREA CLEAN. Cluttered areas andbenches invite accidents.

DON'T USE IN DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENTS,

Don't use power tools in damp locations, or exposethem to rain or snow. Keep work area well lighted.

6. KEEP CHILDREN AWAY. All visitors and bystandersshould be kept a safe distance from work area.

7. MAKE WORKSHOP CHILD PROOF with padlocks,master switches, or by removing starter keys.

8. DON'T FORCE THE TOOL. Itwill do the job betterand safer at the rate for which itwas designed.

9. USE THE RIGHT TOOL. Do not force the tool or anattachment to do a job for which it was not designed.

10. USE PROPER EXTENSION CORDS. Make sureyour extension cord is in good condition. When usingan extension cord, be sure to use one heavy enoughto carry the current your product will draw. Anundersized cord will result in a drop in line voltageand in loss of power which will cause the tool tooverheat. The table on page 5 shows the correct sizeto use depending on cord length and nameplateampere rating. If in doubt, use the next heavier gauge.The smaller the gauge number, the heavier the cord.

11 .WEAR PROPER APPAREL. Do not wear looseclothing, gloves, neckties, rings, bracelets, or otherjewelry which may get caught in moving parts.Nonslip footwear is recommended. Wear protectivehair covering to contain long hair,

13.WEAR A FACE MASK OR DUST MASK. Sawingoperation produces dust.

14.SECURE WORK. Use clamps or avise to hold workwhen practical. It's safer t_an using your hand and itfrees both hands to operate tool.

15.DISCONNECT TOOLS before the servicing, andwhen changing accessories such as blades, bits andcutters.

16.REDUCE THE RISK OF UNINTENTIONALSTARTING. Make sure switch is in the OFF positionbefore plugging the tool in.

17.USE RECOMMENDED ACCESSORIES. Consult thisOperators Manual for recommended accessories.The use of improperaccessories may cause riskofinjury to yourself or others.

18.NEVER STAND ON THE TOOL. Serious injury couldoccur if the tool is tipped or if the cutting tool isunintentionally contacted.

19.CHECK FOR DAMAGED PARTS. Before further useof the tool, a guard or otherpartthat is damagedshould be carefullycheckedto determinethat itwilloperate properlyandperformits intendedfunction -check for alignmentof moving parts, bindingofmoving parts, breakageof parts,mounting, and anyother conditionsthat may affect itsoperation.A guardor other partthat is damaged shouldbe properlyrepaired or replaced.

20.NEVER LEAVE THE TOOL RUNNING UNATTENED.

TURN THE POWER "OFF". Don't walk away from arunning tool untilthe blade comes to a complete stop& unplug the unit.

21 .DON'T OVERREACH. Keep proper footing andbalance at all times.

22.MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE. Keep tools sharpand clean for best and safest performance. Followinstructions for lubricating and changing accessories.

SPECIFICSAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR 18. NEVER reach around the saw blade.

THIS SLIDING MITER SAW

The right side sliding fence must be removed whenmaking any right bevel angle cuts greater than 35 ° incombination with any right hand miter angle.This fence must also be removed whenever a 45 _'bevel

angle is desired with a miter angle greater than 22.5 °.

1. USE ONLY CROSS-CUTTING SAW BLADES. Whenusing carbide tipped blades, make sure they have anega_ve hook angle. IMPORTANT: DO NOT USETHIN KERF BLADES- they can deflect and contactguard and can cause possible injuryto the operator.

2. DO NOT operate the miter saw until it is completelyassembled and installed according to theseinstructions.

3. IF YOU ARE NOT thoroughly familiar with theoperation of miter saws, seek guidance from yoursupervisor, instructor, or other qualified person.

4. ALWAYS hold the work firmly against the fence andtable. DO NOT perform any operation free hand (useclamp wherever possible).

5. KEEP HANDS out of the path of the saw blade. If theworkpiece you are cut_ng would cause your hands tobe within 8-3/4" inches of the saw blade, theworkpiece should be clamped in place before makingthe cut.

6. BE SURE the blade is sharp, runs freely, and is freeof vibration.

7. ALLOW the motor to come up to full speed beforestarting a cut.

8. KEEP THE MOTORAIR SLOTS CLEAN and free ofchips or dust.

9. ALWAYS MAKE SURE all handles are tight andlocked in position before cutting. Lock the quickcam miter lock for every cut even if the table ispositioned in one of the positive stops.

10.BE SURE both the blade and the collars are cleanand the arbor bolt is securely tightened.

11. USE only blade collars specified for your saw.

12. NEVER use blades larger or smaller in diameterthan 12-inches.

13. NEVER apply lubricants to the blade when it isrunning.

t4. ALIi_AYS check the blade for cracks or damagebefore operation. Replace a cracked or damagedblade immediately.

t5. NEVER use blades recommended for operation atless than 4200 RPM

16. USE the blade guards at all times.

17. ALWAYS keep the blade guards in place.

19.MAKE SURE the blade is not contacting theworkpiece before the switch is turned ON.

20.IMPORTANT: After completing the cut, release thepower switch and wait for the blade to stop beforereturning the saw to the raised position.

21.MAKE SURE the blade has come to a complete stopbefore removing or securing the workpiece, changingthe workpiece angle, or changing the angle of theblade.

22.NEVER cut metals or masonry products with this tool.This miter saw is designed for use on wood andwood-like products.

23.NEVER cut small pieces. If the workpiece being cutwould cause your hand or fingers to be within 8-3/4"inches of the saw blade the workpiece is too small.

24.PROVIDE adequate support to the sides of the sawtable for long work pieces.

25.NEVER use the miter saw inan areawith flammableliquids or gases,

26.NEVER use solvents to clean plastic parts. Solventscould possibly dissolve or otherwise damage thematerial.

27.SHUT OFF the power before servicing or adjustingthe tool.

28.DISCONNECT the saw from the power source andclean the machine when finished using.

29.MAKE SURE the work area is clean before leavingthe machine.

30.SHOULD any part of your miter saw be missing,damaged, or fail in any way, or any electricalcomponent fail to perform properly, shut off the switchand remove the plug from the power supply outlet.Replace missing, damaged, or failed parts beforeresuming operation.

ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTSPOWER SUPPLYAND MOTOR

SPECIFICATIONS

The AC motor used in this saw is a universal,nonreversible type. See "MOTOR" in the "PRODUCTSPECIFICATIONS" section on page 2.

To avoid electrical hazards, fire hazards, or damage tothe tool, use proper circuit protection. Your saw is wiredat the factory for 120V operation. Connect to a 120V, 15Amp circuit and use a 15 amp. time delay fuse or circuitbreaker. To avoid shock or fire, if power cord is worn orcut, or damaged in any way, have it replacedimmediately.

DOUBLE INSULATED

The power tool is double insulated to provide a double

thickness of insulation between you and tool's electrical

system. All exposed metal parts are isolated from theinternal metal motor components with protecting insulation.

Replacement parts - When servicing use only identicalreplacement parts.

Polarized plugs - This saw has a plug that looks like bheone shown below:

To reduce the risk of electrical shock, this saw has a

polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). This

plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one way. If the plugdoes not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still

does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install the

proper outlet. Do not change the plug in any way.

Double insulation does not take the place of normal safety

precautions when operating this tool.

To avoid electrocution:

1. Use only identical replacement parts when servicing a

tool with double insulation. Servicing should be performed

by a qualified technician.2. Do not use power tools in wet or damp locations or

expose them to rain or snow.

This tool is intended for indoor use only.

MOTOR SAFETY PROTECTIONIMPORTANT:

To avoid motor damage, the motor should be blown out or

vacuumed frequently to keep sawdust from interfering withthe motor ventilation.

1. CONNECT this saw to a 120V, 15 amp. circuit with a 15

amp. time delay fuse or circuit breaker. Using the wrong

size fuse can damage the motor.2. If the motor won't start, release the trigger switch

immediately. UNPLUG THE S/_v_. Check the saw blade

to make sure it turns freely. If the blade is free, trytostart the saw again. If the motor still does not start, referto the "TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE"

3. IF the tool suddenly stalls while cutting wood, releasethe trigger switch, unplug the tool, and free the blade

from the wood. The saw may now be started and the cutfinished.

4. FUSES may "blow" or circuit breakers may trip

frequently if:

a. MOTOR is overloaded - overloading can occur ifyou feed too rapidly or make too many start/stopsin a short time.

b. LINE VOLTAGE is more than 10% above or below

the nameplate voltage rating. For heawt loads, the

voltage at motor terminals must equal the voltage

specified on the nameplate.c. IMPROPER or dull saw blades are used.

5. Most motor troubles may be traced to loose or incorrect

connections, overload, low voltage or inadequate powersupply wiring. Always check the connections, the load

and supply circuit if the motor doesn't run well. Check

minimum gauge for the length of cord you are using onthe chart below.

GUIDELINES FOR EXTENSION CORDS

Use a proper extension cord. Make sure your extension

cord is in good condition. When using an extension cord,

be sure to use one heavy enough to carry the current yourproduct will draw. An undersized cord will cause a drop in

line voltage, resulting in loss of power and cause

overheating. The table below shows the correct size to usedepending on cord length and nameplate ampere rating. If

in doubt, use the next heavier gauge. The smaller the

gauge number, the heavier the cord.

Be sure your extension cord is properly wired and in

good condition. Always replace a damaged extension cordor have it repaired by a qualified person before using it.

Protect your extension cords from sharp objects, excessive

heat and damp or wet areas.

Use a separate electrical circuit for your tools. Thiscircuit must not be less than # 12 wire and should be

protected with a 15 Amp time delay fuse. Before

connecting the tool to the power line, make sure the switch

is in the OFF position and the electric current is rated thesame as the current stamped on the motor nameplate,

running at a lower voltage will damage the motor.

• The use of any cutting tool except 12 inch saw bladesthat meet the requirements under recommended

accessories is prohibited. Do not use accessories such

as shaper cutters or dado sets. Ferrous metal cutting,the use of abrasive wheels and the cutting of masonry

products are prohibited.

• Do not attempt to modify this tool or createaccessories not recommended for use with this tool.

Any such alteration or modification is misuse and could

result in a hazardous condition leading to possibleserious injury.

To avoid the risk of personal injury, do not modify this

Read warnings and conditions on your carbide tipped saw

blade. Do not operate the saw without the proper sawblade guard in place. Carbide is avery hard but brittle

material. Care should be taken while mounting, using, and

storing carbide tipped blades to prevent accidentaldamage. Slight shocks, such as striking the tip while

handling, can seriously damage the blade. Foreign objects

in the workpiece, such as wire or nails, can also cause tipsto crack or break off. Before using, always visually

examine the blade and tips for bent teeth, cracks,

breakage, missing or loose tips, or other damage. Do notuse if damage is suspected. Failure to heed to these safety

instructions and warnings can result in serious bodily

injury.

UNPACKING YOUR SLIDING MITER SAW

To avoid injury from unexpected starting or electrical

shock, do not plug the power cord into a source of power

during unpacking and assembly. This cord must remainunplugged whenever you are working on the saw.

]. Remove the miter saw from the carton.

IMPORTANT: Do not lift the miter saw by the switch

handle or miter table handle. It may cause

misalignment. Lift the machine by the built in carryhandles.

2. Place the saw on a secure stationary work surface.

3, Separate all parts from the packing material. Checkeach one with the illustration to make certain all

items are accounted for, before discarding anypacking material.

If any part is missing or damaged, do not attempt to

assemble the miter saw, or plug in the power cord until

the missing or damaged part is correctly replaced. Toavoid electric shock, use only identical replacement parts

when servicing double insulated tools.

CRAFTSMAN SLIDING COMPOUND MITERSAW TERMS

ARBOR LOCK - Allows the user to keep the blade fromrotating while tightening or loosening the arbor Ioct_ng bolt

during blade replacement or removal.

BASE - Supports the table, holds accessories and allowsfor workbench or leg set mounting.

BEVEL LOCKING HANDLE - Locks the miter saw at a

desired bevel angle.

BEVEL SCALE - To measure the bevel angle of the saw

blade 0° to 45 ° left and right.

COVER PLATE SCREW - Loosen this screw and rotate

the plate for access to the blade arbor Iocl_ng bolt.

DUST CHUTE - Exhausts debris away from the user.

EXTENSION TABLE - Extends the width of the work table

for support while cutting long work pieces. Each extension

table incorporates a stop lever for repetitive cuts.

FENCE - Helps to keep the workpiece from moving whensawing. Scaled to assistwithaccuratecuing.

RETRACTABLE LOWER BLADE GUARD - Helps protect

your hands from the blade in the raised position, it retractsas the blade is lowered.

MITER HANDLE - Used to rotate the saw to the right orleft cuttingposition.

MITER SCALE - Measures the miter angle of the saw

blade. Positive stop index points have been provided at 0 's,15 °, 22.5 °, 31.6 _'and 45 ° right and left, and 60 ° right.

MITER SPRING LOCK - Used in combination with the

miter handle, it locks the miter saw at a preset positive stop

for the desired miter angle.

MOUNTING HOLES - To mount the miter saw to a stablesurface.

ON/OFF TRIGGER SWITCH - To prevent the trigger from

being accidentally engaged, a lock-off slide switch is

provided. To start the tool, push the lock-off slide switchforward and squeeze the trigger. Release the trigger to

stop the miter saw.

STOP LATCH - Locks the miter saw in the loweredposition for compactstorage andtransportation.

SWITCH HANDLE - The cutting head handle contains the

1rigger switch and a safety lock-off slide switch. The blade

is lowered into the workpiece by pushing down on thehandle. The saw will return to its upright position when thehandle is released.

WARNING LABELS - Read and understand for your own

safety. Always make certain these are in place & legible.

WRENCH STORAGE - Convenient storage to prevent

misplacing the blade wrench.

WOODWORKING TERMS

ARBOR- The shaft on which a blade is mounted.

BEVEL CUT - An angle cut made through the face of the

workpiece.

COMPOUND CUT -A simultaneous bevel and miter cut.

CROSS CUT- A cut made across the width or grain of the

workpiece.

FREEHAND - Performing a cut without using a fence

(guide), hold down or other proper device to prevent the

w_rkpiece from twisting during the cutting operation.

GUM-A sticky sap from wood products.

HEEL - Misalignment of the blade.

KERF - The amount of material removed by blade cut.

MITER CUT- An angle cut made across the width or grain

of the workpiece.

RESIN -A sticky sap that has hardened.

REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE (RPM) - The number ofturns completed by a spinningobject inone minute.

SAW BLADE PATH - The area of the workpiece or table

top directly in line with the travel of the blade or the part of

the workpiece which will be cut.

SET - The distance between two saw blade tips, bent

outward in opposite directions to each other. The furtherapart the tips are, the greater the set.

WORKPIECE - The item being cut. The surfaces of aworkpiece are commonly referred to as faces, ends, and

edges.

ASSEM BLY INSTRUCTIONS

To avoid injury, do not connect this miter saw to the

power source until it is completely assembled andadjusted, and you have read and understood this

Operators Manual.

UNLOCKING THE SLIDE CARRIAGE (Fig, A)

Afl_r removing the saw from the carton, loosen the

slide carriage lock knob. When transporting or storingthe miter saw, the slide carriage should always be

locked in position. The carriage lock handle (1) is

located on the right side of the slide carriage.

LOCK THE CUTTING HEAD (Fig. B)

To avoid injury and damage to the saw, transport or

store the miter saw with the cutting head in the down

position. NEVER use the lock pin to hold the cuttinghead in a down position for cutting operations.

To unlock the cutting head from the collapsed position:1. Push down slightly on the cutting head (2).

2. Pull outthelockpin (3).

3. Allow the cutting head to rise to the uppermostposition.

When transporting or storing the miter saw, the cutting

head should always be locked in the down position:1. Push the cutting head (2) down to the collapsed

position.

2. Push the lock pin (3) into the locking hole (4).

IMPORTANT: To avoid damage, never carry the miter

saw by the switch handle, the cutting arm, or the mitertable handle. ALWAYS use the designated carrying

handles located on the top of the machine.

REMOVINGAND INSTALLING THE TABLE INSERT(Fig. H)

To avoid injury:

• Always unplug the saw to avoid accidental starting.Remove all small pieces of material from the tablecavity before performing any cuts. The table insertmay be removed for this purpose, but alwaysreattach the table insert prior to performing a

cutting operation.

• Do not start the sliding compound miter saw

without checking for interference between theblade and table insert. Damage could result to theblade, table insert or turntable if blade strike occursduring the cutting operation.

1. To remove, loosen and remove the six screws (1)

on the table insert (2) with a screwdriver andremove the insert.

2. To install, reposition the table insert, install the sixscrews and tighten.

3. Check for blade clearance by moving the slidecarriage through the full motion of the blade in thetable slot.

MOUNTING THE MITER S/_f (Fig. I,J)

To avoid injury form unexpected saw movement:• Disconnect the power cord from the outlet, and lock

the cutting head in the lower position using the lockpin.

° Lockthe slide carriage in place in place bytightening the slide carriage lock knob.

° To avoid back injury, lift the saw by using thedesignated carrying handles located on the top of

the machine. Bend with your knees, not your back.• Never carry the miter saw by the power cord or by

the switch handle. Carrying the tool by the powercord could cause damage to the insulation or thewire connections resulting in elecb'ic shock or fire.

• To avoid injury from flying debris, do not allowvisitors to stand near the saw during all cuingoperations.

Mounting instructions1. For stationary use, place the saw in the desired

location, directly on a workbench where there isroom for handling and proper support of theworkpiece. The base of the saw has four mountingholes. Bolt the base of the miter saw (1) to the worksurface (5), using the fastening method as shctwn in

REMOVING OR INSTALLING THE BLADE

Only use a 12-inch diameter blade.

To avoid injury from an accidental start, make sure

the switch is in the OFF position and plug is notconnected to the power source outlet.

REMOVING (Fig. K, L, lVl)

1. Unplug the saw from the outlet2. Raise the miter saw to the upright position.3. Raise the lower clear plastic blade guard (!) to the

uppermost position. (Fig, K)4. While holding the lower blade guard, loosen the

cover plate screw (2) with a Phillips screwdriver.

5. Rotate the cover plate (3) to expose the arbor bolt

(4).6. Place the blade end wrench over the arbor bolt.

7. Locate the arbor lock (5) on the motor, below the beltcover. (Fig. L)

8. Press the arbor lock, holding it in firmly while turningthe blade clockwise. The arbor lock will then engageand lock the arbor. Continue to hold the arbor lock,while turning the vcrench clockwise to loosen thearbor bolt.

9. Remove the arbor bolt, the laser collar (6), and theblade (7). Do not remove the inner blade collar.

(Fig. IV])10. Raise the lower clear plastic blade guard (1) to the

upright position (Fig. K) to remove the blade.

NOTE: Pay attention to the pieces removed, notingtheir position and direction they face. Wipe the blade

collars clean of any sawdust before installing a newblade. Also, the 12" blade has a 1" arbor hole with a5/8" reducer to mount onto the saw.

INSTALLING BLADE (Fig. K, L, M)

Un-plug the miter saw before changing/installing theblade,

1. Install a 12" blade with a 5f8" arbor (or a 1" arbor witha 5/8" reducer) making sure the rotation arrowon the blade matches the clockwise rotation arrow on

the upper guard, and the blade teeth are pointingdownward.

2. Place the laser collar (4) against the blade and onthe arbor. Thread the arbor bolt (6) on the arbor.(Fig. M) in a counterclockwise direction.

IMPORTANT: Make sure the flats of the blade collars

are engaged with the fiats on the arbor shaft. Also, theflat-side of the laser collar must be placed against theblade.3. Place the blade wrench on the arbor bolt.

4. Press the arbor lock (5t, holding it in firmly whileturning the blade counterclockwise. When itengages, continue to press the arbor lock in, whiletightening the arbor bolt securely, (Fig. L)

5. Rotate the cover plate (3) backto its original positionuntil the slot in the cover plate engages with the cover

plate screw (21. While holding the lower blade guard,tighten the screw with a Phillips screwdriver. (Fig. L)NOTE: The lower blade guard must be raised to theupright position to access the cover plate screw.

6. Lower the clear retractable blade guard (1) and verify

the operation of the guard does not bind or stick. (Fig.K)

7. Be sure the arbor lock is released so the blade

turns freely by spinning the blade until the arbor lockdisengages,

0 ° Bevel adjustment (Fig N, N-2, O)

1, Loosen bevel lock handle (4- Fig. O) and tilt thecutting arm while pushing in the bevel detent pin

(1 - Fig. N-21 in against the 0° bevel stop. Tightenthe bevel lock handle.

2. Place a combination square on the miter table with

the rule against the table and heel of the square

against the saw blade.3, If the blade is not 0° to the miter table, loosen the

four adjustment bolts (1 - Fig. N) at the rear of theunit with a 5 mm hex wrench. Unlock the bevel lock

handle and adjust the cutting arm zero degrees to

the table. Tighten the bevel lock handle and the

four he× bolts after alignment is achieved.

Bevel Scale Indicators (Fig. N-l)

1. When the 0° bevel adjustment is complete, adjustboth indicators (2) so the tip of the pointers align withthe 0° line on the bevel scale (3) by loosening thepointer screw (11 using a screwdriver then retightenthe screw after adjustment is complete.

6. Repeat steps until the blade is 45 ° to the table.

the 33.9 ° left bevel positive stop by pushing in onthe bevel detent pin toward the rear of the machine.

MITERANGLE ADJUSTMENT (Fig. O)

The sliding compound miter saw scale can be easilyread showing miter angles from 0° to 45 ° to the left, and0 ° to 60° to the right. The most common angle cutsetting slots have positive stops, permitting fastadjustments to the desired position. Follow the processbelow for quickest and most accurate adjustments.1. Lift up on the miter quick lock to unlock the table.2. Move the turntable while lifting up on the positive

stop locking lever (1) to align the indicator (2) tothe desired degree measurement.

4. Lock the table into position by pressing down onthe miter quick lock.

To Square Blade to Fence (Fig. P):1. Turn the upper arm assemblyto the 0 ° bevel

position and lock in position.2. Using a hex keywrench, loosen the four fence

locking hex socket bolts (1) untilthe fence (2) isloose.

3. Lower the cutting head assembly and lock it in thedown position with the stop pin.

4. Using a combination square (3), lay the heel of thesquare against the blade, and the rule against thefence (2) as shown. Check to see if the fence is90 ° to the blade.

5. If an adjustment is necessary, shift the fence until itis square to the blade. _ghten the four fencelocking bolts (1) once alignment is achieved.CAUTION: If the saw has not been used recently,recheck blade squareness to the fence andreadjust if needed.

To avoid injury:Form unexpected starting or electrical shock, do notplug the saw in. The power cord MUST remainunplugged when you are working on the saw.

Positive Stop Miter Angle Adjustment: (Fig. Q)

1. Unlock the miter table by lifting up on the miterquick-cam table lock (3).

2. While raising the positive stop locking lever up (2),

grasp the miter handle and rotate the miter table leftor right to the desired angle.

3. Release the positive stop locking lever and set themiter at the desired angle making sure the leversnaps into place. NOTE: The lever will only lock

into place at one of the ten positive stops.4. Once angle is achieved, press down on the

quick-cam miter table lock (3- Fig. (3).

Quick-Cam Miter Table Lock Operation: (Fig. Q)If miter angles required are NOT one of the ten positive

stops noted above, the mitertable can be locked at anyangle between these positive stops I_yusing the MiterQuick-Cam table lock.

1. Unlock the miter table by lifting up on the miterquick-cam table lock (3).

2. While holding the positive stop locking lever up (2),

grasp the miter handle and move the miter table leftor right to the desired angle.

3. Release the positive stop locking lever..4. Press down on the Miter Quick-Cam locking lever

(3) until it locks the miter table in place.

NOTE: The miter Quick-Cam locking lever shouldlock the table and prevent it from moving. Ifadjustment is needed, see next step.

Quick-Cam Miter Table Lock Adjustment: (Fig. Q)1. Press down and lock the Quick-cam the miter

quick-cam table lock.2. Turn the stop nut (5) to the left as shown using a

13ram wrench to extend the locking arm against thebase of the miter saw.

3. Test the quick cam miter lock to verify it locks the

table into position securely.4. Turn the lock nut (6) to the right as shown to lock

the miter locking mechanism into place.

Setting Cutting Depth (Fig. R)The depth of cut can be preset for even and repetitiveshallow cuts.

1. Adjustthe cutting head down until the teeth of theblade are at the desired depth of cut.

2. While holding the upper arm in position, turn thestop knob (1) until it touches the stop plate (2).

3. Recheck the blade depth by moving the cuttinghead front to back through the full motion of atypical cut along the conb'ol arm.

Maximum Cut'dng Depth (Fig. R)

The maximum depth trawl of the cutting head was setat the factory, Check to see that the cutting head doesnot extend more than 1/4" belowthe table insert, anddoes not touch the control arm throat or any part of thebase or table. If the maximum depth needs readjusting:

1. Loosen the bolts ofthe stop plate (2).2. Move the cutting head down until the blade extends

just 1/4" below the table insert.3. Adjust the stop place to touch the bottom of the

stop knob (1) when the stop knob is raised fully.4. Recheck the blade depth by moving the cutting

head fTont to back through the full motion of a cutalong the control arm. If the blade touches theinside of the control arm, readjust the setting.

THE LASER -TRAC_

Your tool is equipped with our latest innovation, theLaser -Trac_, a battery powered device using Class]]_a laser beams, The laser beams will enable youto preview the miter blade pa_ on the workpiece tobe cut before you begin your operation.

Laser is activated when blade is rotating. Do not stareinto beam or view directly with optical instruments. Donot remove the warning label affixed to the bladeguard. Avoid direct eye contact with light source.

NOTE - The red laser line will appear as a dotted line

when the motor is activated and the blade assembly isin the uppermost position. This broken line will assistyou in aligning the mark on your workpiece with thecutting path of the saw blade. As you lower the bladeassembly, the retractable guard will lit_ and turn thebroken line into a solid red laser line.

OPERATION OF LASER

With the blade assembly in the uppermost position:

1. Position your workpiece onto the miter saw.2. Turn on the miter saw to activate the laser beam.

3. Verify the laser beam is aligned with the mark onthe workpiece (WARNING - Do not lower the bladeassembly during the alignment process).

4. If the mark on the workpiece is not aligned with thedotted laser line, tum off machine, wait for the

blade to stop and reposition workpiece.5. Turn on the miter saw and verify alignment.6. Once alignment is achieved, secure workpiece with

a clamping device and perform the cut.

• Keep all guards in place, in working order and properadjustment.If any part of this miter saw is missing, bent damagedor broken in any way, or any electrical parts don't work,turn the saw off and unplug it.Replace damaged, missing, or defective parts beforeusing the saw again.

• Maintain tools with care. Keep the miter saw clean for

• Choose the correct 12 inches diameter blade for thematerial and the type of cut'dngyou plan to do. Do notuse Thin Kerfblades.

The right side sliding fence must be removed when makingany right bevel angle cuts greater than 35° in combination

with any right hand miter angle.This fence must also be removed whenever a 45 ° bevel

angle is desired with a miter angle greater than 22.5 °.

Make sure the blade is sharp, undamaged andproperly aligned. With the saw unplugged, push thecutting arm all the way down. Manually spin the bladeand check for clearance. Tilt the miter-head to a 45 °

bevel and repeat the test.

BEFORE EACH USEInspect your saw.• Disconnect the miter saw. Toavoid injury from

• Compare the direction of rotation arrow on theguardto the directionarrow on the blade.The bladeteeth should alwayspointdownwardat the front of thesaw.

• Tighten the arbor holt.• Tighten the cover plate screw.• Check for damaged parts. Check for:

• Alignment of moving parts• Damaged electric cords• Binding of moving parts• Mounting holes• Function of arm return spring and lower guard:

Push the cutting arm all the way down, then let itrise until it stops. The lower guard should fullyclose. Follow instructions inTROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE for adjustment.

• Other conditions that may affect the waythe mitersaw works.

• Make sure the blade and arbor collars are clean.

• Make sure all clamps and locks are _ght and there isno excessive play in any parts.

Use the right tool. Don't force a tool or attachment todo a job itwas not designed to do. Use a different toolfor any workpiece that can't be held in a solidly braced,fixed position.

CAUTION: This machine is NOT designed for cuttingmasonry, masonry products & ferrous metals (steel, iron,and iron-based metals.) Use this miter saw to cut onlywood & wood-like products. Other material may shatter,bind the blade, or create other dangers. Remove all nails

that may be in the workpiece to prevent sparking that couldcause a fire.

DRESS FOR,_FETY

Any power tool can throw foreign objects into the eyes.This can result in permanent eye damage. Everydayeyeglasses have only impact resistant lenses and are not

safety glasses. Glasses or goggles not in compliance withANSI Z87.1 could seriously injure you when they break.• Do not wear loose clothing, gloves, neckties or jewelry

(rings, watches). They can get caught and draw youinto moving parts.

• Wear non-slip footwear.• l]e back long hair.• Roll long sleeves above the elbow.• Noise levels vary widely. To avoid possible hearing

damage, wear ear plugs when using any miter s_rw.• For dusty operations, wear a dust mask along with

safety goggles.

• Make sure there are no gaps between the workpiece,

fence and table that will let the workpiece shitt duringthe cut.

• Keep the cut off piece free to move sideways after it iscut off. OthenMse, it could get wedged against theblade and thrown, possibly causing injury.

• Only the workpiece should be on the saw table.• Secure work. Use clamps or a vise to help hold the

work when it's prac_cal.

USE EXTRA CAUTION WITH LARGE OR ODD SHAPEDWORKPIECE8.

• Use extra supports (tables, sawhorses, blocks, etc.)for workpieces large enough to tip.

• Never use another person as a substitute for a tableextension, or as an additional support for a workpiece

that is longer or wider than the basic miter saw table,or to help feed, support, or pull the workpiece.

• Do not use this saw to cut small pieces. If theworkpiece being cut would cause your hand or fingersto be within 8-3/4" inches of the saw blade workpieceis too small. Keep hands and fingers out of the "nohands zone" area marked on the saws table.

• When cutting odd shaped workpieces, plan your workso it will not bind in the blade and cause possibleinjury. Molding, for example, must lie fiat or be held bya fixture or jig that will not let it move when cut.

• Properly support round material such as dowel rods,or tubing, which have atendencyto roll when cut,causing the blade to "bite".

of the workpiece being cut.Plan your work to avoid small pieces that may bind, orthat are too small to clamp and get a solid grasp on.Plan the way you will grasp the workpiece from start tofinish. Avoid awkward operations and hand positions. Asudden slip could cause your fingers or hand to move intothe blade.

DON'T OVER-REACH

Keep good footing and balance. Keep your face and body

to one side, out ofthe line of a possible kickback. NEVERstand in the line of the blade.

Never cut freehand:

• Brace your workpiece firmly against the fence andtable stop so it will not rock or twist during the cut.

• Make sure there is no debris between the workpieceand the table or fence.

To avoid injury, follow all applicable safety instructions,when cutting non-ferrous metals:• Use only saw blades specifically recommended for

non-ferrous metal cutting.

• Do not cut metal workpieces that must be hand held.Clamp workpieces securely.

• Cut non-ferrous metals only if you are under thesupervision of an experienced person.

WHEN SAW IS RUNNING

Don't allow familiarity from frequent use of your miter sawto result in a careless mistake. A careless fraction of a

second is enough to cause a severe injury.

Before cutting, if the saw makes an unfamiliar noise or

vibrates, stop immediately. Turn the saw OFF. Unplug thesaw. Do not restart until finding and correcting the problem.

BODYAND HAND POSITION (Fig. S)Proper positioning of your body and hands when operatingthe miter saw will make cutting easier and safer. Neverplace hands near the cutting area. Place hands at least8-3/4" away from the path of the blade. Hold workpiecefirmly against the fence to prevent movement toward theblade. Keep hands in position until the trigger has beenreleased and the blade has completely stopped. Beforemaking a cut, with the power switch inthe OFF positionbring the saw blade dov_ to the workpiece to see thecutting path of the blade.

* Keep children away. Keep all visitors a safedistance from the miter saw. Make sure bystandersare clear of the miter saw and workpiece.

• Don't force the tool. It will do the job better andsafer at its designed rate. Feed the saw into theworkpiece slowly with a firm downward motion.

Before freeing jammed material.• Turn switchOFF.• Unplug the miter saw,• Wait for all moving parts to stop.

Alter finishing a cut.• Keep holding the power head down.• Release the switch, and wait for all moving

parts to stop before moving your hands.• If the blade doesn't stop within 6 seconds,

unplug the saw and follow the instructions inTHE TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE section for

adjusting the blade brake before using thesaw again.

The handle of the miter saw has been designed to rotate

and lock at three different positive stops; 45 ° left, 0 °, and45 ° right for operator convenience. To rotate the handle:

To avoid injury from materials being thrown, always unplugthe saw to avoid accidental starting, and remove smallpieces of material from the table cavity. The table insertmay be removed for this purpose, but always reattach thetable insert prior to performing a cut'dng operation.

MITER CUT (Fig. W)The sliding compound miter saw is equipped with tenpositive miter stops (1) on the saw base. The locations areat0, 15, 22.5, 31.6 and45 degrees left and right, and 60 °right. These locations represent the most common angles

for cutting operation. To make a miter cut:1. Unlock the miter table by liffing up on the miter

quick-cam table lock (2).2. While raising the positive stop locking lever up (3),

grasp the miter handle (4) and rotate the miter tableleft or right to the desired angle.

3. Release the positive stop locking lever and set themiter at the desired angle making sure the lever snapsinto place. NOTE: The lever will only lock into place atone of the ten positive stops.

4. Once the desired miter angle is achieved, press down

on the quick cam miter table lock to secure the tableinto position.

The right side sliding fence must be removed when makingany right bevel angle cuts greater than 35 ° in combinationwith any right hand miter angle.This fence must also be removed whenever a45 ° bevel

angle is desired with a miter angle greater than 22.5 _'.

Tilt the cutting head to the desired angle as shown on thebevel scale. The blade can be positioned at any angle,from a 90 _'straight cut (0°' on the scale) to a 45 ° left andright bevel. Tighten the lock handle (2) by pushing down to

lock the cutting head in position. Bevel positive stops areprovided at 0°, 33.9 ° and 45 °.

wood fence (this provides additional depth of cut). Thisfence should be constructed of straight auxiliary wood

appro_mately 3/4 inch thick by 3 inches high by 20-1/2

inches long. Attach the wood fence securely and make afull depth cut to make a blade slot. Check for interference

between the wood fence and the lower blade guard. Adjust

if necessary'.When making multiple or repetitive cuts that result in cut-off

pieces of one inch or less, it is possible for the saw blade

to catch the cut-off piece and throw it out of the saw or intothe blade guard and housing, possibly causing damage or

injury.To minimize this an au_liary wood fence can be

CUTTING BASE MOLDING (Fig. II)Base moldings and many other moldings can be cut on acompound miter saw. The setup of the saw depends onmolding characteristics and application, as shown. Perform

practice cuts on scrap material to achieve best results:1. Always make sure moldings rest firmly against fence and

table. Use hold-down, crown molding vise or C-clamps,whenever possible, and place tape on the area beingclamped to avoid marks.

2. Reduce splintering by taping the cut area prior to making

the cut. Mark the cut line directly on the tape.3. Splintering typically happens due to an incorrect blade

application and thinness of the material.

Your compound miter saw is suited for the difficult task ofcutting crown molding. To fit properly, crown molding must

be compound-mitered with extreme accuracy. The twosurfaces on a piece of crown molding that fit flat againstthe ceiling and w-all are at angles that, when addedtogether, equal exactly 90 ° .

Most crown molding has a top rear angle (the section thatfits flat against the ceiling) of 52°and a bottom rear angle

(the section that fits flat against the wall) of 38 °.

In order to accurately cut crown molding for a 90 ° inside oroutside comer, lay the molding with its broad back surfaceflat on the saw table.

When setting the bevel and miter angles for compoundmiters, remember that the settings are interdependent;changing one changes the other, as well. Also keep inmind that the angles from crown molding are very easy forthese angles to shift slightly, all settings should be tested

on scrap molding.

Use crown molding vise, whenever possible, and placetape on the area being clamped to avoid marks. There iscrown molding chart for your reference on page 25.

Note: Replace the batteries with batteries that have arating of 1.5 volts (Number LR44).When replacing the batteries, the battery cover should be

CHANGING THE BELT (Fig. KK)

• Unplug your saw.1. Loosen the bolts (1) and remove the belt cover.2. Turn the screw (2) anti-clockwise with an Allen

wrench to move the motor to forward.

3. Remove and replace the belt.

4. Turn the screw (2) clockwise with an Allen wrench tomove the motor to rearvcard. Do not over tighten.

5, Replace the belt cover and tighten the bolts.

IVlAINTENANCEDANGER

Never put lubricants on the blade while it is spinning.

To avoid fire or toxic reaction, never use gasoline,naphtha acetone, lacquer thinner or similar highly volatilesolvents to clean the miter saw.

To avoid injury from unexpected starting or electricalshock, unplug the power cord before working on the saw.

For your safety, this saw is double-insulated. To avoidelectrical shock, fire or injury,use only parts identical tothose identified in the parts list. Reassemble exactly asthe original assembly to avoid electrical shock.

REPLACING CARBON BRUSHES (FIG. LL)The carbon brushes fumished will last approximately 50hours of running time, or 10,000 ON/OFF cycles.Replace both carbon brushes when either has less than1/4" length of carbon remaining, or if the spring or wire is

damaged or burned. To inspect or replace brushes, firstunplug the saw. Then remove the black plastic cap (1) onthe side of the motor (2). Remove the cap cautiously,because it is spring-loaded. Then pull out the brush andreplace. Replace the other side in the same manner. Toreassemble, reverse the procedure. The ears on the

metal end of the assembly go in the same hole thecarbon part fits into. Tighten the cap snugly, but do notovertighten.

NOTE: To reinstall the same brushes, first make sure the

brushes go back in the way they came out. This willavoid a break-in period.

LOWER BLADE GUARD

Do not use the saw without the lower blade guard. Thelower blade guard is attached to the saw for your

protection. Should the lower guard become damaged, donot use the saw until the damaged guard has beenreplaced. Develop a regular checkto make sure thelower guard is working properly. Clean the lower guard ofany dust or buildup with a damp cloth.

CAUTION: Do not use solvents on the guard. They couldmake the plastic "cloudy" and brittle.

When cleaning the lower guard, unplug the saw from thepower source receptacle to avoid unexpected startup.

SAWDUST

Periodically, sawdust will accumulate under the worktable and base. This could cause difficulty in themovement of the worktable when setting up a miter cut.

Frequently blow out or vacuum up the sawdust.

If blowing sawdust, wear proper eye protection to keepdebris from entering eyes.

LUBRICATION

All the motor bearings in this tool are lubricated with asufficient amount of high grade lubricant for the life of the

unit under normal operating conditions; therefore, nofurther lubrication is required.Lubricate the Following as Required:

Chop pi_t: light machine oil or aerosol will penetrate

from the ends of the junction points. A qualified servicetechnician can remove the pivot upstop to relieve tension,and the 2 metric set screws holding the shaft, in order todrive the shaft about 3/4" right. Exposed surfaces arelubricated with automotive type oil.

Central pivot of plastic guard: Use light household oil

(sewing machine oil ) on metal-to-metal ormetal-to-plastic guard contact areas as required forsmooth, quiet operation. Avoid excessive oil, to whichsawdust will cling.

Link: (which actuates the lower guard movement) may be

oiled at the rear pivot, greased at ball bearing contact,and oiled where the link actuates the acetyl roller of thelower guard, if the down chop motion is hard to start.
