Hard to believe I am saying that already, but here it is. I can’t start this month without thanking you all for your generous support of our “Drive for 20” fundraising campaign. One of the best parts of be- ing a Skyridge student is the ability to parcipate in one or more of our extracurricular acvies. With your support of this drive, we will connue to be able to offer these opportunies to our students. Speaking of extracurricular acvies, we have kicked off our second sporng season of the school year. Our 8 th grade football team ended fall as the league champions and our girls cross country team had a very successful sea- son as well, culminang in a fun race through the rain at the district meet and a solid 3 rd place finish. Great job to all of our fall sports parcipants. The very next week we began our first winter sports season with both wrestling and 7 th /8 th grade volleyball geng underway. The kids are praccing hard and preparing for their season. We also have our Science Olympiad team meeng every Wednesday as well, so there are plenty of involvement opportunies for our students. As a staff, we are connuing to build our knowledge of the growth mindset and the adolescent brain. Our teachers completed an acvity during our October late starts around connecng kids to school. The extracurricular acvies that I menoned before are one way to do this, but we are also working on ways to build community within our classrooms so that students know that they are in a safe place to make mistakes and learn from them. This is some- thing that can carry over into the home. Especially with middle school students, the answer to “How was school to- day?” is oſten “Fine”. Try changing up the queson. With my own daughters, we have begun to occasionally ask them “What mistake did you learn from today?” It not only gets away from the “Fine” answer, but allows them to see that mistakes can be a great learning experience. This leads me back to something that I talked about last month. I would like to open up the opon for parents to parcipate in a book study around the adolescent brain and what growth mindset looks like for adolescents. We would meet 3-4 mes as a group to discuss the reading and look at some other sources of in- formaon. We know that the best way to meet the needs of our kids is to work as a partner- ship with parents, so we hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity. This was an amazing experience for our stu- dents and our staff and we really can’t thank you enough. HOME OF THE SKYHAWKS NOVEMBER 2016

Hello Skyhawk Families,

Welcome to November! Hard to believe I am saying that already, but here it is. I can’t start this month without thanking you all for your generous support of our “Drive for 20” fundraising campaign. One of the best parts of be-ing a Skyridge student is the ability to participate in one or more of our extracurricular activities. With your support of this drive, we will continue to be able to offer these opportunities to our students.

Speaking of extracurricular activities, we have kicked off our second sporting season of the school year. Our 8th grade football team ended fall as the league champions and our girls cross country team had a very successful sea-son as well, culminating in a fun race through the rain at the district meet and a solid 3rd place finish. Great job to all of our fall sports participants. The very next week we began our first winter sports season with both wrestling and 7th/8th grade volleyball getting underway. The kids are practicing hard and preparing for their season. We also have our Science Olympiad team meeting every Wednesday as well, so there are plenty of involvement opportunities for our students.

As a staff, we are continuing to build our knowledge of the growth mindset and the adolescent brain. Our teachers completed an activity during our October late starts around connecting kids to school. The extracurricular activities that I mentioned before are one way to do this, but we are also working on ways to build community within our classrooms so that students know that they are in a safe place to make mistakes and learn from them. This is some-thing that can carry over into the home. Especially with middle school students, the answer to “How was school to-day?” is often “Fine”. Try changing up the question. With my own daughters, we have begun to occasionally ask them “What mistake did you learn from today?” It not only gets away from the “Fine” answer, but allows them to see that mistakes can be a great learning experience.

This leads me back to something that I talked about last month. I would like to open up the option for parents to participate in a book study around the adolescent brain and what growth mindset looks like for adolescents. We would meet 3-4 times as a group to discuss the reading and look at some other sources of in-formation. We know that the best way to meet the needs of our kids is to work as a partner-ship with parents, so we hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity. The book is titled Brainstorm, The Power and Purpose of the Teenage Brain by Daniel Seigel. To sign up, please click here. As always, if you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Join us for dinner and dessert at our next restaurant event with a por-tion of the proceeds coming back to Sky PTO! We use this money on things like Staff Appreciation and staff grants, which make Skyridge a great place to be for all.

Staff Appreciation: No Tricks, Just Treats

The late start on October 20 brought with it a surprise, fall-themed Staff Appreciation treat buffet, complete with mountains of coffee pods donated by many wonderful families! We can’t thank you enough for stepping up to make our staff feel so wonderful.

Monthly Sky PTO Meetings

Our next PTO meeting will be Tues., Nov. 22, from 12-1 p.m. with Principal Williams. We won’t have one in December, but we will have one in January — an evening meeting at the new Project-Based Learning Program location. Stay tuned for the date and time!
