Skills Addressed Contestants should be prepared to do the following:

● Safety and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment i.e. wear safety glasses at all times!) ● Prepare Bill of Materials (use your best penmanship!) ● Material layout (“Optimization of Material”) ● Manufacture:

○ Case and drawer construction ○ Line boring for hinge plates ○ Cut notches ○ Cut miters ○ Bore pocket hole screws ○ Biscuiting ○ Template shaping ○ Routing an edge profile ○ Edgebanding ○ Apply molding

(NOTE: this is not an exhaustive list) Contest Description: there are two components to the contest:

1. Bill of Materials (Written Test) and Material Layout worksheet: Contestants will prepare a material list for a cabinet with door, shelf, top, and upper shelf. 2. Drawer, Case, and Shelf Construction: *This year we will be assembling the drawer box on Friday

April, 20th at the Ontario Convention Center following the written test. Students should bring clamps and hand tools to cut a square notch in the back of the drawer box that day.* Contestants will receive pre-cut components of Solid Stock and Plywood Sheet Goods. Most material to be used will be rough width and rough length. Only a couple of the large components will be cut to net size. Joinery for the Top, Case, Shelf, and Drawer will have one or more of the following, butt joint, biscuit joint, miter, pocket hole, glue and nails. Contestants will receive a template to locate hinge plate holes and adjustable shelf pin holes. The Cabinet is to have hardwood edging with miters at corners, routed with an edge profile on three sides to crate the toe kick and chair rail. The Case will be assembled using biscuits as a guide and pocket hole screws to fasten components together. The Drawer Box is to be assembled using pre-machined dovetail corners. Blum MOVENTO Drawer slides will be used for the drawer (note notch at back of drawer). Drawer Front will be attached to Drawer box using double sided tape and four truss head drawer screws. A hinge boring machine will be used for boring cup holes on door and inserting hinges. A 3/16” diameter drill bit will be used to locate and drill knob locations and apply knobs. Use fine sandpaper to ease all hard edges.
