Skills USA 2013 Motor Control Wire Off Grain Silo Fill Conveyer Control Problem

A farming company has hired you to wire the control system for their grain silos. Conditions: A farming group just intergraded a new auger system to the conveyer belts that feeds into two silos. An electrician will be required to wire the machines controls. Customer Requirements: (Work description) An HOA (Hand off Auto) switch will power the control circuit. In the Hand position the auger will run until switched back into off position and power will be indicated by a green pilot light. In the auto position the auger will start with the green momentary push button. Power will be indicated by a green pilot light. Silo #1 is equipped with a fill limit switch; a green indicator light will come on when silo #1 is full and start the conveyer system to begin the process of sending grain to silo #2. A red indicator light will power on when the conveyer is on. Silo #2 is equipped with a fill limit switch. When Silo #2 is full, a red indicator light will illuminate at the control center and a control timer with a 5 second delay will stop the entire system. A red momentary button will be used as an E-Stop at the control center Sequence of Operation: The operator will switch the HOA to the auto position to begin process. Once in the auto position the operator will push the start button to run the auger. The auger alone will fill silo #1. Once full a limit switch in silo #1 will engage and start the conveyer belt system to start filling silo #2. Once silo #2 is full, a timer with a 5 second delay will shut off the entire system. (HOA) The operator can switch to the Hand position to operate the auger only for a short period of time if necessary. (JOG) (HOA) For safety reasons in the off position no equipment shall operate or be jogged.

SPECIFICATIONS: Grain Silo Fill Control system    1. The work area consists of a 4’ x 8’ sheet of plywood. All AFF measurements will be from the floor. 2. All work will be done using the 2011 NEC. 3. Installation must utilize minimum materials while still meeting all requirements. 4. All box and device mounting dimensions will be to the center of the box or device unless otherwise specified. 5. Power will be supplied by cord set attached to the large enclosure.

6. Porcelain light fixtures and lamps will be used to simulate the “Auger motor” and the “Conveyor belt”. The lamp, indicating the “Auger motor” is mounted 24” AFF and 16” from the left edge of board. The lamp, indicating the “Conveyor motor” is mounted 36” AFF and 18” from the right edge of the board. An indicator lamp at the control box will represent if the Auger is on or in run mode. MC Cable will be used to connect the Auger motor and the conveyer motor.

7. A limit switch will indicate when Silo 1 is full and will be mounted 18” AFF and 26” from the left side

of the board to the left side of the switch. A limit switch representing when Silo 2 is full will be mounted 12” AFF and 24” from the left side of the board. Liquid tight will be used to wire these switches.

8. The “Grain Auger motor” (simulated by a porcelain light fixture) will be wired with black wire for the current carrying conductor and white wire for the neutral. The neutral will not be broken (i.e. it will not be broken by the contacts in the starter). 9. The “Conveyer motor” (simulated by a porcelain light fixture) will be wired with black wire for the current carrying conductor and white wire for the neutral. The neutral will not be broken (i.e. it will not be broken by the contacts in the starter).

10. All control wiring will be a red conductor with white for the neutral. 11. An HOA (Hand Off Auto) will be used at the control box. In the hand position the auger will run. In the off position for safety nothing will operate. In the Auto position the control system will start once the start button is engaged. 12. An emergency stop button will be located at the control box. When engaged it will stop the auger and the conveyer belt. 13. A control timer will be mounted at the control center to shut off the conveyer belt and auger 5 seconds after silo 2 is full 14. All buttons and/or lights must be labeled.

15. The job is not complete until the Job Work Sheet is filed out.
