Skills Development Portfolio

PURPOSE As the first step on your journey to becoming an expert in your field of the media industry you must acquire, develop and test the new skills that will allow you to create outstanding media products. The skills development portfolio is your opportunity to learn new skills and enhance existing skills in a portfolio of diverse work which demonstrates your ability to grasp new concepts, apply them in a range of forms, adapt to challenges presented and apply your learning in new contexts.

Task 1: Media Production Skills

Unit Aim: To provide the student with an introduction to a range of processes and skills used in creative media production and technology and to the particular characteristics and methods of communication within the media sector.

Task Description:This task requires you to engage in practical production processes to build new skills and experiment with a range of different styles and techniques. These experiments with new production processes will be logged in your development portfolio to demonstrate what you have learnt from the ongoing practical workshops. The aim at this stage is to build a broad portfolio which demonstrates your adaptability and creativity.In addition to the practical application you will need to demonstrate an ability to work according to safe working practices that are required in a professional workplace. This will be evidenced through your professional conduct and assessment of risks that can be present throughout production.Whilst you experiment with different production processes you must record and critically compare the effectiveness of different processes to show an understanding of how these might be best used to communicate with specific target audiences.

Task 2: Design & Research Skills

Unit Aim: To provide the student with an introduction to a range of design and research activities and related skills appropriate to the support of creative media production. The unit will also develop an understanding of the vital role that design and research play in informing and developing ideas.

Task Description:

Every idea for your next project has to start somewhere. For this task you need to demonstrate an understanding of how research is used to originate, select and design ideas for media products. You will learn about a range of research methodologies and when best to use different techniques. This should be informed by comparing a range of methods and tools used for research and then creating your own concepts based on your research.Evidence of this process will be included in your skills development portfolio and you should clearly evaluate the effectiveness of different forms of research for different

Task 3: Industry Practice

Unit Aim: To provide the student with an introduction to the diversity of roles, responsibilities, employment and progression opportunities available within the sector. It will introduce the student to professional working practices and give an understanding of the skills needed for a career in creative media technology and production.

Task Description:This task is centred around gaining an understanding of how the media industry works, the job opportunities that are available and how you progress on your journey to your ideal position within the industry. You will need to demonstrate an understanding of the various sectors within the media industry, the specific job roles within that sector and identify how you access those jobs.
