5/9/2023 Informative ANNEX 6 1 of 58 Mfg. Ndm Vs. Speed
These Informative Annexes are for the use of the Task Force and are not to be included in the API Standards
Bearing Reference Speeds & Allowable Ndm Values for various Mfg. & Brg. types Vs API
This Annex contains a summary and back-up data used in determining the Ndm limits in SP Section 6.9 Table 6.9-2. Table 6.9-2 sets the Ndm limits above which fluid film bearings are used. Below the limits of table 6.9-2 rolling element bearings may be used if the requirements of Table 6.9-1, & 6.9-2. and 6.9.1.2 – 6.9.XX are met.

2-12 SKF13-20 NTN21-27 NSK28-36 MRC37-46 FAG47-48 Summary Table
Procedure to determine the values in Table 6.9-2.
For each of the 5 manufacturers listed above, catalogue values for each of 7 types of bearings was determined. For each bearing type 4 shaft diameters (25, 50, 75 &100mm) were chosen. For each shaft diameter, the minimum and maximum OD was tabulated. Corresponding speed limits were then determined for the 8 selections for each bearing type. The low values for each bearing types were then averaged. This average is what is tabulated in the Summary table.
The corresponding speed limits were categorized into oil lubricated, and grease lubricated. The grease lubricated limits were further subdivided into bearings with no or partial seals and those with rubbing seals (for those bearings which come with the shield or seals.) If the SP specified a certain type of cage, i.e angular contact bearings require machined cages and tapered roller bearings pressed cages, the corresponding values for these cages were used.
If no cage design is specified in the SP, the manufacturer’s catalogue ratings were manipulated, per their catalogue directions, to provide speed ratings for pressed cages. In may instances the catalogue ratings are tabulate for machined cages which generally are rated at the highest speed. A footnote then instructs the purchaser to reduce these speed limits if the bearings have pressed cage or resin designs even though the pressed or resin cage identification is next to the speed limit. One could easily misinterpret that the speeds
5/9/2023 Informative ANNEX 6 2 of 58 Mfg. Ndm Vs. Speed
listed next to the bearing designation applies to that bearing. Whereas they may have to be reduced by 20-25% if machined cages are not available.
Once the speed limits for each of the referenced categories was tabulated for the 8 different sizes for each bearing type, they were averaged. This average number is the one appearing in the Summary table.
The summary table lists for the averaged speed limits for each manufacturer for each type of bearing. These averages were again averaged to obtain an industry wide average speed limit number. The lower of 80% of this industry average, or 85% of the lowest speed for each bearing was used for Table 6.9-2. The deep grooved ball bearing limit of 500 for oil lubricated applications was determined by API 610 task force experience.
The column for circulating oil or oil mist is based on the industry wide speed limit number referenced in the previous paragraph. The NSK catalogue E1101g Pg A 37 states: “ When the speeds are more than 70% of the listed limiting speed, it is necessary to select oil or grease which has good high speed characteristics” . SKF in their publication 4560 E “ Rolling bearings in industrial gearboxes pg 83 states: “ Bearing speeds which are higher than 70-80% of the catalogue speed ratings are considered high. In such cases the following influences must be taken into consideration. Heat produced as the result of the friction…temperature differential between the inner and outer races…higher minimum load..” As the result of these caveats, the speeds listed in the circulating oil and oil mist column were raised to the industry wide speed limit number referenced in the previous paragraph. It should be noted that these industry wide numbers closely agree with the corresponding numbers for circulating oil and oil mist in API 673.
For traceability, extensive references are provided in the various tabulations as to the manufacturers catalogue number reference, and year of publication, and the pages within the catalogue from which the data was extracted.

Note 1: Speed data from SKF Catalogue 4000 – 3rd edition 1999, pg 156-162. A later SKF catalogue 5000E dated 2003 has speeds based on ISO 15312 which are much higher and have to be substantially reduced for each application. It has been decided not to use the rating criteria in ISO 15312 since each individual application needs to be calculated, the method is based on bearings standard clearances ( we require class C3 which has increased clearances), and it assumes heat is dissipated away from the bearing to the shaft. Many of the API applications have heat input to the bearing from the shaft due to hot product conducting heat to the shaft.Note 2: Single row deep groove Bearing bearing with shields or no rubbing seals.with no seals or shields which do not contact the rotating component.Note 3: Single row deep groove bBearing with seals that rub and contact.Note 4: Referenced SKF catalog pg 150 & 156.Note 5: Machined cgs generally not available in sizes below approx. 110mm (4in.) inside diameter.

Two piece machined brass cage (MA) (outer ring centered), and MB (Inner ring centered) allowable speeds use 1.3 multiplier on the catalogue speeds. One piece window-type brass cage inner or outer ring centered (ML or MP) use a 1.5 multiplier on the catalogue speeds. Note 5: Per MRC catalogue M190-730 4th Edition printed in 1998 pg 111. Footnote 3 indicates the speed data is for pressed brass cages. On pg 109 they indicate that these bearings are available in either pressed brass or machined cages. In MRC Catalogue M230-710 “MRC Bearing Solutions for the Hydrocarbon Process Industry” on pg 26 Footnote 3 they indicate the speeds listed in that publication for these same bearings reflect machined brass cages. These speeds are the same as in the M190-730 publication which indicates pressed brass cages. Therefore it does not appear that MRC makes any speed corrections for this bearing depending on pressed or machined cages. The values listed above therefore are from MRC catalogue M190-730 4th Edition printed in 1998 bottom of pg 111.Note 6: MRC bought by SKF in 1986

Four of the 25mm bore bearings were resin. The 50, 75, 100 mm bores bearings were available in both resin & machined cages. Both resin and machine cages were rated at the same speed. None of these bearings were available in pressed cages. Note 5: RC = Resin Cage MC = Machined cageNote 6: NTN catalogue for these bearings indicated that their catalogue ratings were for machined cages and that if pressed cages were used the machined cage speeds should be reduced by 25%. Ie. Use 75% of the machined cage speeds. Therefore, the low average numbers above have been reduced by 25% to reflect pressed cages since these is no information in the catalogue for this size bearing with pressed cages. These 75% numbers for pressed cages are included in the summary chart at the end of this Annex.

Note 17: Single row Angular Contact Ball Bearings mounted Back-to Back, Face-to-Face, or Tandem are open and do not come with shields or seals.Note 17.1: FAG catalogue information only lists Resin cages for bearings less than 100mm ID. I could not find a any information correlating resin ages and Machined cages. Will use the information for resin cages since it appears to fall in line with the other manufacturers who have machine cages for this type bearing.
