Apostles Creed....................................................................................Dewey OffieldI believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer for Illumination........................................................................Dewey OffieldLet us pray together.

Lord, open our hearts and minds by the power of your Holy Spirit, that, as the Scriptures are read and your Word proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Amen

Scripture............................................Mark 9:2-8.................................Dewey OffieldAfter six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. 3 His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. 4 And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6 (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.) Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!” Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.

This i s t he Word o f God fo r t he peop le o f God . Thanks be to God! Amen!

Church History Thoughts: “We overestimate evil and underestimate God. We don’t see what God is doing and conclude God is doing nothing. We see everything that is evil and think it is in control of everyone.” Eugene Peterson, (1932- )“God isn’t put off by brokenness, weakness, failure, and sin. He simply declares them not true of us anymore. He is saying, ‘You now have a new identity: saint, blessed, chosen, adopted, redeemed, and forgiven.’ The power of God should never be underestimated.” Steve Lawson, (1951- ) “God’s will is a profound and holy mystery, and the fact that we live our everyday lives engulfed in this mystery should not lead us to underestimate it.” Thomas Merton, (1915-1968)“Do not underestimate how much the power of God can do in your life. The Lord can break down our strongest defenses, defuse our despair, free us from guilt, and lead us to Him.” Timothy Keller, (1950- ) “God has not abandoned you. Don’t underestimate what He can through the difficult circumstances of your life. He can and will show you His glory. Allow Him to speak through your adversity.” Charles Stanley, (1932- )
