During the May quarterly meetings, six employees were named recipients of Saia’s 2009-2010 Chairman’s Award. The winners were TPA City Dispatcher Barbara Clark, ACO Xreme Assurance (XA) Representative Josh Harter, CCI Terminal Manager Paul Howard, HNT City Driver John Penny, JKN Dockworker Matt Richardson, and NOL Line Driver Bill Salter.
Originated in 1997, the Chairman’s Award recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of employees who exude excellence, a commitment to customer service and the company, as well as a dedication to their fellow employees or commu-nities. Each nominee has to earn this recognition through committing a specific deed or series of actions. This year’s recipients were chosen to receive this prestigious honor because of their commitment to Saia, safety, the pursuit of excel-lence, and life! We believe they represent a group of outstanding employees who have demonstrated their desire to achieve not only personal goals, but company goals as well.
TPA City Dispatcher Barbara Clark has high standards and expectations that create a synergistic impact throughout the entire TPA operation. When Barbara takes ownership of a process or procedure, she demands excellence. It has been said that she is a solid leader that expects and receives topnotch performance from all members of her team. Many credit Barbara’s leadership as the reason why drivers work seam-lessly on a daily basis to provide shippers with exceptional service. Accordingly, when a problem does arise, Barbara is always proactive in her solution and outcome. Every shipper enjoys
Barbara’s expertise and courtesy. Recently, she worked extensively with Glynn Morgan and the industrial engineering team to develop the pilot of the company’s new PUD optimization software. According to her terminal manager, Furman Smith, her commitment to Saia, our customers, and her fellow employees is outstanding.
ACO XA Representative Joshua Harter has been instrumental in the creation, development and implementation of the new MABD process in our Customer Service Department. This program works with any customer who ships PPD to Wal-Mart. As a member of our customer service team, Josh was tasked with finding a way to both help operations maintain visibility of the deliveries, but also to handle the customer contact portion of the program. He accepted ownership of the program from the beginning and has worked with management to put together the processes that are now in place. Josh is a big part of the reason Saia has been able to build its PPD Wal-Mart vendor business by 14% compared to last year.
Not only has CCI Terminal Manager Paul Howard been with Saia 25 years, during this period he has always made himself available in any capacity to help. Paul’s outstanding performance shows his total commitment to his
employees. For example, in 2009, CCI’s street
production stood at 2.94 bills per hour and stops
Saia’s 2010 Scholarship Program will soon issue
its call for applications. Now celebrating its
eighth year of existence, the program has awarded
a total of $118,000 to 77 deserving students
since its inception.
As in previous years, the program is open to all
full-time employees and their dependants and
is designed to help cover college or graduate
school expenses for recipients. This year, as before,
Saia will award 12 college scholarships — six in
the amount of $2,000 and six in the amount of
$1,000 for a total of $18,000. Awards will be
based on qualifications outlined in a packet that is
being mailed to each full-time employee’s home
address. In addition to the packet, employees
can also access the application and guidelines on
Saia’s Intranet.
To be eligible for consideration, all applicants
must be a full-time student and carry 12 or more
hours of college or graduate student courses for
each semester of the school year applied under.
Scholarships will be awarded based on the
applicant’s academic achievement, their
community service, and/or an innovation or
accomplishment in a field of study and interest.
Applications are due to Saia’s Atlanta Corporate
Office no later than July 9, 2010. Recipients will
be selected by the end of July and letters will be
sent to winning applicants advising them of their
award at the beginning of August. Those not
selected will receive an e-mail informing them of
the committee’s decision at that time as well.
For more information, please contact Jeannie Jump,
Saia corporate communications coordinator, at
extension 4069 or via e-mail at [email protected].

MetLife Oral Health Library
Research has shown that
there are direct and indirect
links between oral health
and one’s overall wellness.
MetLife, our dental carrier,
has compiled a collection that contains valuable,
reputable information from the American Dental
Association, the American Academy of Periodontology,
and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial
Research regarding oral healthcare. Their easy-to-
navigate site contains valuable information on many
different topics including family dental health, oral
diseases, and dental treatments and procedures.

The Web site is a clearinghouse for all dental
information — from dental policy information, to claim
status, dependent eligibility, and network providers.
Prepare Now for Tropical Storms and Hurricanes
As hurricane season officially commences next month,
this particular notice is directed at our Gulf and East
Coast employees. As most everyone knows, being
ready is the key to successfully surviving a hurricane
or tropical storm. By having a disaster supply kit
prepared and a family evacuation plan, you can
help alleviate a lot of stress and worry brought on
by hurricane season. As the Boy Scouts say, “Be
Prepared!” As you plan, it is helpful to breakdown
your checklist into what to do before, during and
after the storm.
While there are many sources available, I encourage
employees to visit the links listed below:

stormdetails.html
» www.livescience.com/environment/

Additionally, your local television and radio stations
usually have other Web sites available that feature local
news and information. They, too, typically provide
information/fact sheets and publications to the public.
Specific instructions relative to Saia facilities will
be provided by the company at the time of the
emergency.
Keep a Safe Kitchen
Most family meals prepared at
home are done so in a
meticulous manner. Thus, there
is rarely a food preparation issue. Having said that,
cross-contamination in the kitchen, as well as food
poisoning caused by leftovers, undercooked meats,
and poorly-prepared buffets, can be problematic if you
aren’t careful. As such, below are some helpful hints:
» Wash Up! Remember to wash your hands often
and before handling each food item you are
preparing. The more you wash the better.
» Keep Countertops Squeaky Clean. Wash them
often with hot soapy water or bacterial cleaner
— particularly if raw food has been sitting on the
counter.
» Avoid Cross-contamination. Cutting boards and
utensils should be cleaned between food
preparation, particularly if you have been working
with meat or seafood.
» Cook Completely. Cook meat until it registers a
temperature of 160 degrees and cook poultry
until it reaches a temperature of 165. For those
with weakened immune systems or worries about
bacteria, cook eggs thoroughly.
» Thaw Foods Safely. Bacteria thrive at room
temperature so play it safe and thaw foods in the
refrigerator.
» Don’t Be Lazy! Refrigerate leftovers promptly.
» Prep Produce. Thoroughly rinse all your fruits
and vegetables under running water even if you
don’t intend to eat or use the skins or rind.

type “food safety” in the search bar.
We have increased the number of teams earning
18 Again! status for the fourth month in a row. In
all, five terminals, 28 Eastern Division sales/driver
teams, and 30 Western Division sales/driver teams
have reached their goals. Congratulations to the
following driver and sales representative teams
who surpassed their 18 shipments per day goal for
the month of April. Those with an asterisk by their
name achieved the honor for the first time.

I just want to tell you that ACO Customer Service
Representative Kira Frates has been doing an
excellent job! The past couple of weeks I have been
giving Saia some freight that normally I would not
have. She has been able to provide some spots
with the truck rate department. She has been
instrumental on some of the added business and
lanes that I have been giving Saia.
Thanks,

Company Update
Boehland Named New BGO Customer Service Manager
Luke Boehland has been named the new customer
service manager for the Boise General Office. He
joins Saia with nine years of call center manage-
ment experience having worked for several large,
national companies.
De La Paz Named New NAE
Gil De La Paz has joined our national account
team based in Chicago. He will have responsibility
for the Chicago market as well as national
accounts in Minnesota and Wisconsin. With over
24 years of experience, Gil is a seasoned veteran.
Most recently, he was a corporate sales executive
for another carrier. Prior to this, Gil ran his own
transportation sales and consulting business for
six years and worked as vice president of sales
and marketing for a transportation broker.
per hour results were 2.24. Service was over
97%, in and out, and the terminal’s claims ratio
was under 1% (0.67) with an outbound DBE
of 123 for 2009. CCI’s inbound DBE was 66 in
2009. During the push to improve DBEs, Paul
was a leader in the training of drivers. He also
led the charge on labeling issues in the oilfield
business. Last year, he led the CCI team in two
successful terminal moves due to the delays in
the building schedule of a new terminal — with no
impact to service.
Last year, we received an
e-mail at the ACO exclaiming
the virtues of HNT City Driver
John Penny. He had saved a
woman from choking. The e-
mail stated, “Your driver was in the Sam’s Club
in Florence, AL eating lunch when a lady behind
him started choking and couldn’t breathe. He
stopped eating and went to her aid. He did the
Heimlich maneuver a couple times and cleared
her airway. The lady was very thankful to say
the least. Your driver stood with her for a few
minutes to make sure she was okay and then he
finished his lunch. He said his actions were nothing
really and that he was just glad he was there
when she needed help.” The witness to John’s
heroics ended her e-mail by saying, “There needs
to be more people like him in the world.” In
addition this singular deed, John’s terminal
manager, Ben Crawford, said John has an excellent
work ethic and a great rapport with his fellow
employees in Huntsville. Ben said John is
consistently at the top of the list in productivity
amongst the drivers in his group and that he
works with a great attitude.
JKN Dockworker Matt
Richardson’s performance at
his terminal has a positive
impact everyday. In fact, the
Jackson terminal has increased
their inbound DBE performance to consistently
exceed the company standard. Matt’s personal
DBE also exceeds the standard and he is always
running well over goal. Due in large part to Matt’s
efforts, Meijers, a large national account, continues
to utilize Saia as their primary inbound carrier.
The Jackson terminal is able to provide them with
strong service due to Matt’s desire to satisfy on a
daily basis. Matt has taken on the responsibility of
dealing directly with the frontline workers at Meijers
and the relationship he has built over the last year
has proven to be very advantageous to our operation
and the success we have with this account. According
to Terminal Manager Jim Bryan, Matt is the type of
person that personifies the Saia culture.
NOL Line Driver Bill Salter
has worked as a Saia driver for
32 consecutive years without
a preventable accident. He
has driven over four million
accident-free miles and worked over 80,000 injury
free hours. In fact, Bill is the only employee achieving
this many years without an accident or injury. In
addition to an unparalleled safety record, Bill’s
terminal manager, Murray Parker, said he is an
excellent employee and that he has no problem
expressing his ideas and thoughts on how we can
improve our operation and the company. Murray
said Bill is one of the top performing linehaul drivers
in the New Orleans terminal. In addition to his work
in 2009, Bill was the top performing line driver in
NOL for the months of January and February.
