This state office building reflectsboth good design and concern for

energy conservation. Thermal massand shading techniques allow thebuilding to use only 40 percent of

the energy required by newconventional office buildings.

According to the architects, theirenergy-conscious design could not

have been accomplished without the

use of precast and prestressedconcrete. Prestressed concretedouble tees and the supportingprecast ladder frames, exposed tointerior office spaces, contribute to

the thermal mass effect used in the

heating and cooling of the spaces.On the exterior, precast concretecomponents act as sun screens.The designer also used the exteriorcomponents to break the mass ofthe building into smaller elements.

The architecture of this shoppingall is expressed by exposing therecast prestressed concrete

structural frame in both the interiorand exterior. Large window areasare emphasized by the beam andcolumn framing.

Extending the system three storiesin the central court area providesnatural lighting for the entire space.Shops are woven in and out of theframework for variety. Prestressedconcrete beams are connected in avery direct manner to the columnsby using a simple corbel cast ontothe sides of each precast concretecolumn.

This importantrntropolitan transit

station is set apart from others by

its massive segmental precast

concrete roof and the extensive use

of precast prestressed concrete

(2,000 pieces) throughout the four-

level structure. In plan, the roof

measures 262 by 167 ft. (80 by

51 m) and it is framed with 9

longitudinal and 11 transverse

segmental beams. The huge beams

consist of precast concrete

segments 13 ft. (4 m) long, match-

cast, epoxy glued and post-

tensioned. Beam ends support large

hollow-beam fascia panels. At the

center, supported on the beam-

column framework, is a 66-ft. (20 m)

circular drum consisting of an inner

and outer ring each with 16 con

crete segments post-tensioned

Form and technology have cometogether in this mixed-use studentactivities center to produce asymbol for modern architecture. The architects were faced with theproblem of creating an open butsecure building for the police forcethat was also architecturally compatible with the nearby Art Gallery of

Ontario. Architectural precastconcrete wall panels in combinationwith large areas of glass block offersecurity while setting a human scalefor the project.

The exposed aggregate precastconcrete panels, ribbed for addedtexture, are similar in appearance tothe materials used on the art gallery.In addition, the precast panels alsohave a layer of insulationsandwiched between the outerlayers of concrete, thus addingenergy efficiency to the list ofadvantages for using precastconcrete on this building.

Projecting a solid corporate imagewhile staying within a tightconstruction budget were theowner’s requirements for its newheadquarters building. Lightlytextured, dark gray precast concretewall panels present a strong,sculptural appearance. The slopingsouth wall adds to the effect andalso acts as a passive solar device.

Recessed, backward slopingwindows are shaded from springthrough fall. Sunlight can enter thewindows in winter months forpassive heat collection. Preformed,lined gutters in the precast concretewall panels below windows removerun-off rainwater from the slopedsurfaces.

All of the esthetic requirementswere achieved within the budgetusing fast-track construction to savetime and money.

The U.S. Army’s most sophisticatedmedical center facilities had tocontinue functioning duringconstruction of the new 1280-bedhospital. Rapid enclosure of thebuilding with architectural precastconcrete wall panels enabledinterior trades to begin work earlyand allowed continuousconstruction. The panels alsoachieve the clean, simple lines andexterior finish required forcompatibility with the older buildingsin the complex. The seven-level, 1.1million sq. ft. (102,190 m2) facilityhas flexibility for future changes.Precast panels can be removed andreplaced for access to interstitialspaces between floors containing allmechanical and electrical systems.

The 867,892 sq.ft. (80,627 m2) facility used nearly2,000 precast prestressed concretejoists in the floor and roof system.

Standard precast concrete powerpoles used as columns to support acast-in-place bridge deck andprestressed concrete arch ribscombine to give this county bridgeits graceful appearance. The 256-ft.(78 m) long bridge has four arch ribsegments and 20 spandrel columns.

This bridge consists of two separatestructures. Precast prestressedconcrete girders are used for thetwo main spans over the railroadtracks and cast-in-place concretebox girders for the remaining spans.The use of precast prestressedconcrete on the middle spansallowed railroad traffic to continueduring construction. Falsework,needed for outer spans, was notrequired for the precast sections.

The trapezoidal box section reducedthe number of girders in the bridgespan and produced a pleasing,sloped exterior surface that blendstogether the precast and cast-in-place sections.

Jury comment: “The design is cleancut and efficiently solved therailroad’s traffic problems.”

The transportation department’smain requirement during theconstruction of these twin structureswas minimizing the impact on thesurrounding environment. Precastconcrete segmental box girders,using a launching truss system forerection, were chosen to meet the

environmental demands. The1090-ft. (307 m) long bridgesintegrate well with the surroundingsand allow the river to flow
