Teaching Tips:

• This set of lessons is intended to introduce upper elementary or middle school students to circle measurements and the number pi.

• Lesson one allows students to practice measurement and understand diameter. Some discussion questions: o How do you know where the center of the circle is? o Why does it matter that you measure through the center? o What is the measurement of the radius and how can you

find it if you know the diameter? • Lesson two allows students to measure circumference of

circular objects in the world around them. You may want to have a col lect ion of objects ahead of t ime, or you can let them walk around the room (or circular foods are always fun!) The important thing for students to understand is that the circumference is equal to the diameter times pi, or approximately 3 times the diameter (no matter the size of the circle).

• Sir Cumference Game: o Materials needed:

§ Printed game board § Game pieces § Die

o To Play: § Players take turns rolling the die and moving around

the board. If they correctly answer the question on their circle they can stay there, if not, they have to go back to the previous circle. The first player to reach Sir Cumference wins.

§ NOTE: The object of this game is to recognize that radius is half of the diameter and the circumference is equal to the diameter times pi. There is no need for students to calculate the decimal answer for circumference, They can simply state C=6  𝜋

Have Fun!

Understanding Circumference:

Radius had to measure a lot of circles. Using what you learned from the story, explain circumference in your

own words. Then, using a tape measurer or string and ruler, fill in the table with your own circumference measurements.

1 . Which object had the greatest circumference?

_________________________________________________________________ 2. Which object had the least?

_________________________________________________________________ 3 . How can you approx imate the diameter of these objects based on what you read in the story?

Help Radius Get the Medicine to Sir Cumference! Roll the die and move forward that number of spaces. If you correctly solve for the missing value, you can stay on that space. If not, go back to where you were. First

player to reach Sir Cumference first WINS!
