BACKGROUND AND WORK DONE IN ASWSD PROJECT
a. Purpose of the interventions - b. Phase 1: Eastern Cape Province – Amathole and OR
Tambo District Municipalities Ceramic filters to households
c. Phase 2: Mpumalanga and Limpopo Provinces AmaDrums for households in Ehlanzeni; Training of households on how to use point of
source treatment; Refurbishment of existing schemes, including the
water sources

LESSONS LEARNED
a. Water Services Act 108 of 1997
b. National Water Act 36 of 1998
![Page 5: SIP WATER AND SANITATION (THE ACCELERATED SUSTAINABLE WATER SERVICE DELIVERY PROJECT) By MP MATJI PR.CPM 12 MARCH 2015](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022072015/56649ebb5503460f94bc2bb9/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
LESSONS LEARNED
a. There are rural communities that are still relying on nearby sources (e.g. springs, wells, and rivers).
b. Most of the wells and springs are not protected.c. In areas where there are unsustainable schemes,
during breakdown period, communities rely on nearby sources
d. There is a need for introducing point of source treatment technologies.
e. Point of source treatment can be used to treat water collected from rivers, springs, and wells.

FINDINGS (CERAMIC FILTERS)
a. All households were impressed and satisfied with filters.
b. Ceramic filters showed limits in terms of volume of clean drinking water produced.
c. All beneficiaries were trained in the use and cleaning of the filters.
d. Cleaning and maintenance support of the filters by households remain a challenge.
e. The average income levels of the households in the study areas were quite low.
![Page 7: SIP WATER AND SANITATION (THE ACCELERATED SUSTAINABLE WATER SERVICE DELIVERY PROJECT) By MP MATJI PR.CPM 12 MARCH 2015](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022072015/56649ebb5503460f94bc2bb9/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
FINDINGS (CERAMIC FILTERS – CONTINUED)
a. Chemical and microbial analysis conducted by Amatola Water Board indicated that the ceramic filters were successful in reducing contamination at household level.
b. Eighteen (18) of the 29 filters investigated achieved (95 – 100) % reduction in E-coli counts.
c. The filtered water from ceramic filter complied with SANAS 241 standards in terms of pH and conductivity.
![Page 8: SIP WATER AND SANITATION (THE ACCELERATED SUSTAINABLE WATER SERVICE DELIVERY PROJECT) By MP MATJI PR.CPM 12 MARCH 2015](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022072015/56649ebb5503460f94bc2bb9/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
FINDINGS (AMADRUMS – THAMBONKULU VILLAGE - MPUMALANGA)
a. Based on the community survey, about 62% of the households ranked wells as their main reliable sources of water.
b. The community relies heavily on rainwater harvested through plastic tanks.
c. There are non-functional boreholes and reticulation infrastructure.
d. Water quality tests conducted in all the wells indicated high levels of nitrates and E-coli
![Page 9: SIP WATER AND SANITATION (THE ACCELERATED SUSTAINABLE WATER SERVICE DELIVERY PROJECT) By MP MATJI PR.CPM 12 MARCH 2015](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022072015/56649ebb5503460f94bc2bb9/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
ISSUES FOR CONSIDERATION
a. Legislative frameworks should take into account point of source treatment technologies, regulatory models, and maintenance support.
b. Such options will contribute towards the provision of safe drinking water, more especially in rural areas.
